  • This study aims to analyze operating performance of a micro gas turbine with the aid of detailed measurements of various system parameters. In addition to embedded measurements, parameters such as exhaust temperatures, engine inlet temperatures and fuel flow rates are measured. Variations in measured data and estimated performance parameters are analyzed. Those data are processed to calculate losses along the power transmission line and the net gas turbine performance (power and efficiency based on the gas turbine shaft end) is isolated from the overall system performance. A method to estimate characteristic parameters such as component efficiencies, based on the comparison between measured and predicted performance data, is suggested and exemplified for the full load condition.

  • When problems such as line fault, breakdown of a substation or a generator, etc. arise on the grid, the Microgrid is designed to be separated or isolated from the grid. Most existing DGs(Distributed Generators) in distribution system use rotating machine. However, new DGs such as micro gas turbine, fuel cell, photo voltaic, wind turbine, etc. will be interfaced with the Microgrid through an inverter. So the Microgrid may have very lower inertia than the conventional distribution system. By the way, the rate of change of frequency depends on the inertia of the power system. Moreover, frequency has a strong coupling with active power in power system. Because the frequency of the Microgrid may change rapidly and largely during transient, appropriate and fast control strategy is needed for stable operation of the Microgrid. Therefore, this paper presents a power balancing strategy in Microgrid during transient. Despite of strong power or frequency excursions, power balancing in the Microgrid can be maintained.

  • The micro-grid designed as bipolar ${\pm}750V$ low-voltage DC power distribution system demonstrated by KEPRI, demands interconnection of a number of small decentralized power source including variable renewable generator. Therefore, variable researches for the influence of interconnection with the bipolar typed DC grid and these variable power sources are required for superior quality of power distribution. Renewable power generation simulators for the bipolar ${\pm}750V$ low-voltage DC power distribution system are necessary for such researches. In this paper, we carry out a research on the photovoltaic simulator that be actually able to interconnect with a bipolar ${\pm}750V$ low-voltage micro-grid. Simulator for this research is not only able to simulate photovoltaic generation according to weather informations and PV modules characteristics, but also contribute to stabilization of bipolar ${\pm}750V$ low-voltage of the system. Therefore, the simulator was designed to develop a system that can situationally respond to variable control algorithms such as the MPPT control, droop control, EMS power control, etc.

  • In this paper, we designed micro-structured electromagnetic transducers for energy harvesting and verified the performance of proposed transducers using finite element analysis software, COMSOL Multiphysics. To achieve higher energy transduce efficiency, around the magnetic core material, three-dimensional micro-coil structures with high number of turns are fabricated using semiconductor fabrication process technologies. To find relations between device size and energy transduce efficiency, generated electrical power values of seven different sizes of transducers ($3{\times}3\;mm^2$, $6{\times}6\;mm^2$, $9{\times}9\;mm^2$, $12{\times}12\;mm^2$, $15{\times}15\;mm^2$, $18{\times}18\;mm^2$, and $21{\times}21\;mm^2$) are analyzed on various magnetic flux density environment ranging from 0.84 T to 1.54 T and it showed that size of $15{\times}15\;mm^2$ device can generate $991.5\;{\mu}W$ at the 8 Hz of environmental kinetic energy. Compare to other electromagnetic energy harvesters, proposed system showed competitive performance in terms of power generation, operation bandwidth and size. Since proposed system can generate electric power at very low frequency of kinetic energy from typical life environment including walking and body movement, it is expected that proposed system can be effectively applied to various pervasive computing applications including power source of embodied medical equipment, power source of RFID sensors and etc. as an secondary power sources.

  • Recently, various developments in the area of small hydropower have being made and small hydro turbines are suitable for domestic use because it is a clean and renewable energy source. A small hydropower generator produces power by using the different water pressure levels in pipe lines and energy which was initially wasted by use of a reducing valve at the end of the pipeline is instead collected by a tubular-type hydro turbine in the generator. In this study, in order to acquire the performance of tubular-type hydro turbine applied, the output power, head, efficiency characteristics due to the different guide vane and runner vane angle are examined in detail. Moreover, influences of pressure and velocity distributions with the variation of guide vane and runner vane angle on turbine performance are investigated by using a commercial CFD code.

  • KEPCO was operating power plants with diesel generators in 49 islands including Baekryeong-Do, and the generation capacity was about 66 MW in 2008. The cost of fuel is increasing by the international oil price inflation and continuous rise of oil price is predicted. For the stabilizing of electric power supply to the separate islands, renewable energy and fuel cell systems were considered. Hydrogen is made using renewable energy such as wind power and solar energy, and then a fuel cell system generates electricity with the stored hydrogen. Though the system efficiency is low, it is treated as the only way to secure the stable electric supply using renewable energy at this present. The analytic hierarchy process was used to select suitable candidate island for the system installation and 5 islands including Ulleung-Do were selected. Economic evaluation for the system composed of a kerosene generator, a wind power, an electrolysis, and a fuel cell system was conducted with levelized generation cost based on present value methode. As the result, the necessity of renewable energy combined generation system and micro grid composition in the candidated islands was confirmed. Henceforth, the development of an integration technology which connects micro grid to the total power grid will be needed.

  • Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) in single-phase to interface distributed renewable energy resources is investigated in this paper. Mathematical models and numerical analysis are utilized to illustrate the features of the VSG. Enhanced control strategy is presented to ensure the performance of the VSG. Besides, a second order generalized integer (SOGI) is employed to calculate the instantaneous output power of the VSG in virtual ${\alpha}{\beta}$ frame. By the means of a phase-locked loop based scheme, the VSG can seamlessly transform between islanded and grid-tied modes, which can meet the requirements of micro-grid. At last, the validation and the proposed approach are verified by the simulated results using PSCAD/EMTDC.
