In this paper, mesoporous Pt on micro pillars Pt electrode is newly designed, fabricated, and characterized on silicon substrate for non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor micro-chip integrated with CMOS readout circuitry. The fabricated micro/nano Pt electrode has cylindrical hexangular arrayed nano Pt pores with a diameter of 3.2 nm which is formed on top of the micro pillars Pt electrode with approximately $6{\mu}m$ in diameter, $6{\mu}m$ in space, and $50{\mu}m$ in height. The measured current responses of the fabricated plane Pt, mesoporous Pt, and mesoporous Pt on the micro pillar Pt electrodes are approximately $9.9nA/mm^2,\;6.72{\mu}A/mm^2,\;and\;7.67{\mu}A/mm^2$ in 10mM glucose solution with 0.1M phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution, respectively. In addition, the measured current responses of the fabricated plane Pt, mesoporous Pt, and mesoporous Pt on the micro pillar Pt electrodes are approximately $0.15{\mu}A/mm^2,\;0.56{\mu}A/mm^2,\;and\;0.74{\mu}A/mm^2$ in 0.1mM ascorbic acid (AA) solution with 0.1M phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution, respectively. This experimental results show that the proposed micro/nano Pt electrode is highly sensitive and promising for CMOS integrated non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor applications. Since the micro-pillar Pt electrode can also be utilized with a micro-fluidic mixer in the sensor chip, the sensor chip can be much smaller, cheaper, and easier to be fabricated.

This paper presents the visualization method in which 3-dimensional(3D) microchannel flow can be detected using a confocal scanning microscope. By soft-lithography, we fabricated various Bio-MEMS(Micro Electro-Mechanical System) devices such as a disposable microchip for a flow cytometer and a micro-mixer, which have 3D structures. Injecting aqueous fluorescent solution in the microfluidic devices, we measured the flow in a steady state by the confocal scanning microscope. At first, we explain the principle of the confocal scanning microscope. And then we show the results from 3D visualization of microscopic flow structures using the confocal scanning microscope.
Effective mixing is an important problem in microfluidics for chemical and biomechanical applications. In this study, the influences of the Reynolds number and the oscillating frequency on mixing characteristics of micro-stirrer are studied in a microchannel with single stirrer. The influence of fluid inertial effects in an active mixer is first discussed. It is found that the stirring effects by stirrer oscillation are promptly attenuated at low Reynolds number, which makes greatly difficult the rapid mixing. As the inertial effects are increased, the chaotic advection is generated and then developed. The mixing phase is finally developed some mushroom shaped structure. And the mixing efficiency is also studied as a function of the oscillating frequency. We found that the mixing efficiency does not always increase with higher oscillating frequency of stirrer. Consequently, we found the functional relation between the optimal frequency of a stirrer and the Reynolds number.
The present paper suggests new method to know the effects of molecular diffusion and the helicity of microchannel flows on mixing in passive micromixers, which are essential components of a microfluidic chip. In this study, 'Helix Index' is newly defined as the magnitude of chaotic advection. Relationship between Helix Index and Mixing Index is analyzed numerically such as the wide range of Peclet and Reynolds numbers in three dimensional serpentine microchannel when using soluble solutions (water/glycerol). As a result, a simple algebraic equation is derived by this relationship based on a regression analysis. The algebraic equation is found to be able to accurately predict the mixing performance without solving the coupled, complex momentum and mass transfer equations.

This paper presents a direct-conversion CMOS transceiver for fully digital DS-UWB systems. The transceiver includes all of the radio building blocks, such as a T/R switch, a low noise amplifier, an I/Q demodulator, a low pass filter, a variable gain amplifier as a receiver, the same receiver blocks as a transmitter including a phase-locked loop (PLL), and a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). A single-ended-to-differential converter is implemented in the down-conversion mixer and a differential-to-single-ended converter is implemented in the driver amplifier stage. The chip is fabricated on a 9.0 $mm^2$ die using standard 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology and a 64-pin MicroLead Frame package. Experimental results show the total current consumption is 143 mA including the PLL and VCO. The chip has a 3.5 dB receiver gain flatness at the 660 MHz bandwidth. These results indicate that the architecture and circuits are adaptable to the implementation of a wideband, low-power, and high-speed wireless personal area network.
Here we describe a unique self-oscillating mixer (SOM) design using a modified defected ground structure (DGS) for down-converter. Proposed SOM is consisted of self-oscillator, which can produce negative resistance and select resonance frequency, and input/output matching filter. As the advantage of this SOM can be reused by module that mix signals with transistor that is used to oscillator, it is simply and low-costly designed Also, there is easy advantage to be applied in RFIC/ MMIC technology because it offers excellent high Q value in spite of using micro-strip structure. Designed self-oscillating frequency is 1.04GHz and RF frequency established is 0.8GHz. It was achieved 20dB conversion loss and phase noise of -95dBc/Hz at 100KHz offset frequency over intermediate frequency (IF). The equivalent circuit parameters for DGS are extracted by using a three dimensional EM simulator and simple circuit analysis method.

Micro-scale test methods are producing small-sample size where the conventional physical and chemical tests can not be used (high standard deviation, uncertain sampling conditions, low repeatability). Different small-scale test methods were developed recently for determination of physico-chemical, functional, rheological properties of wheat or wheat dough using miniaturized instruments with sophisticated sample preparation/handling and mechanics (RVA, 2 g mixograph, micro-Z-arm mixer, small-scale noodle maker, micro-baking method etc.). The small-scale methodologies can be used as basic research tools or as technology supported measurements and can be also essential in the early selection for quality traits in breeding programs. The milling as a sample preparation step is essential procedure providing good quality flour or semolina samples from small amount of grain (5-10 g) in a reproducible and reliable way. The aim of present study was to use NIR as quality control tool, and to evaluate the recently developed and manufactured micro-scale lab mill (FQC-2000) produced by Inter-Labor Co. Ltd., Hungary. The milling characteristics of the new instrument were compared to other laboratory mills and the effects of milling action on the chemical composition of fractions were analysed. The fractions were tested with both chemical and near infrared spectroscopic methods. The micro-scale milling resulted significantly different yields, particle size distributions and different fractions from compositional point of view. The near infrared spectra were sensitive enough to distinguish the fractions obtained by different milling procedures. Quantitative NIR calibration equations were developed and tested in order to measure the chemical composition of characteristic milling fractions. Special qualification procedure the PQS (Polar Qualification System) method was used for detecting the differences between fractions obtained by macro and micro-milling procedures. The results and the limitations of PQS method in this application will be discussed.

The detection of thin-layered soil is important in soft soils to evaluate the soil behavior. The smaller diameter cone penetrometer have been commonly used to detect the layer with increasing sensitivity. The objective of this study is to detect the thin-layered soil using cone resistance and electrical resistance. The cone resistivity penetration test (CRPT) is developed to evaluate the cone tip resistance and electrical resistance at the tip. The CRPT is a micro-cone which has a $0.78cm^2$ in projected area. The application test is conducted in a laboratory large-scale consolidometer (calibration chamber). The kaolinite, sand and water are mixed to make the specimen at the liquid limit of 46% using a slurry mixer. It takes two months for the consolidation of the specimen. After consolidation, the CRPT test is carried out. Furthermore the standard CPT results are compared with the electrical resistance measured at the tip in the field. This study suggests that the CRPT may be a useful tool for detecting thin-layers in soft soils.

Internal fibrillation of pulp fiber is an important factor affecting paper properties. Internal fibrillation of pulp fiber is usually introduced with several kinds of modifications of fiber by the mechanical treatment such as refining, high shear and/or high consistency mixing, etc. Unfortunately there are no standardized methods that can characterize the extent of internal fibrillation and its contribution on the paper properties. The purpose of this study is to try and find the potential methods that can characterize the internal fibrillation of pulp fiber quantitatively. Softwood bleached kraft pulp was treated with Hobart mixer to introduce the internal fibrillation without the significant fiber damage and external fibrillation. The extent of internal fibrillation was increased with the increase of mechanical treatment consistency. Several fiber properties were measured to find the potential means that could characterize and quantity the internal fibrillation. Laminated area could not be used as a means for quantifying the internal fibrillation because of the effect of swelling and the different internal fibrillation behavior at different mechanical treatment consistency. Micro and macro internal fibrillation models were proposed for describing the different behavior for the mechanical treatment at low and high consistencies of pulp. The Internal fibrillation showed good correlation with swelling of fiber wall. This trend was confirmed through the measurement of wall thickness and/or cross section area of fiber. Therefore the internal fibrillation possibly can be described as the indices indicating the change of wall thickness and/or cross section area.
Mixing in Y-channel micro mixer is analyzed through computational fluid dynamics. In the case of passive mixing, we investigate the effect of geometric parameters on the mixing efficiency, such as shape of throttling geometry and angle between two inlets. Mixing performance improves as two fluids join not just horizontally but both vertically and horizontally, and it also improves when channel follows throttling shapes. A numerical results substantiate the highly efficient mixing performance. It is highly beneficial to fabrication process since the proposed throttling geometry is simple, but allows high mixing ratio.
