  • The existing technical limitation makes engineer imitate nature to solve engineering problems. Recently Micro Air Vehicle(MAV) imitating the mechanism of birds or insects is being developed. Especially Ultra Flite supported by DARPA is studying hummingbird aerodynamics to relate that information to MAV. To drive MAV bender piezoelectric(PZT) actuators are used due to the convinience of control and the small size. But the displacement of the PZT actuators are very small, and the wing driving mechanism which amplifies the stroke generated by the PZT actuators has constraints in design and manufacture because of the small dimension. In this paper a wing design concept and a efficient driving mechanism are proposed. Electroactive polymers(EAPs) are used as wing mechanism actuators. Using OpenGL the mechanisms are simulated graphically. Also a prototype actuator is being developed and verified by digital Mockup with CATIA. Basic kinematics of the mechanism is studied.

  • Due to the small size and weight of micro aerial vehicle (MAV), only miniaturized MEMS type sensors are applicable for MAV autonomous flight system. In this paper, we propose a accelerometer and gyro mixing algorithm to improve an attitude performance of MEMS type sensors. The performance of the proposed mixing algorithm is compared with the performance of fuzzy-based mixing algorithm through simulation. The simulation results show that the attitude compensation method through the attitude compensation has better performance than the fuzzy-based mixing method for MAV attitude estimation.

  • This purpose of this paper was to review the development trend of the VTOL MAVs with a ducted propellant that can fly like the VTOL at intermediate and high speeds, hovering, landing, and lifting off vertically over urban areas, warships, bridges, and mountainous terrains. The MAV differs in flight characteristics from helicopters and fixed wings in many respects. In addition to enhancing thrust, the duct protects personnel from accidental contact with the spinning rotor. The purpose of the U.S. Army FCS and DARPA's OAV program is spurring development of a the VTOL ducted MAV. Today's MAVs are equipped with video/infrared cameras to hover-and-stare at enemies hidden behind forests and hills for approximately one hour surveillance and reconnaissance. Class-I is a VTOL ducted MAV developed in size and weight that individual soldiers can store in their backpacks. Class-II is the development of an organic VTOL ducted fan MAV with twice the operating time and a wider range of flight than Class-I. MAVs will need to develop to perch-and-stare technology for lengthy operation on the current hover-and-stare. The near future OAV's concept is to expand its mission capability and efficiency with a joint operation that automatically lifts-off, lands, refuels, and recharges on the vehicle's landing pad while the manned-unmanned ground vehicle is in operation. A ducted MAV needs the development of highly accurate relative position technology using low cost and small GPS for automatic lift-off and landing on the landing pad. There is also a need to develop a common command and control architecture that enables the cooperative operation of organisms between a VTOL ducted MAV and a manned-unmanned ground vehicle.

  • A U-80 propeller and its modified version, U-75 propeller, are used for a micro air vehicle. The performance characteristics of a U-80 propeller and a U-75 propeller have not much known in the published literature. Thus, their aerodynamic characteristics are investigated using a lifting surface numerical method. The lifting surface method is validated by comparing computed results with measured data in a wind tunnel. From the computed results, it is found that the U-75 propeller produces larger thrust with higher efficiency than the U-80 propeller. To enhance the performance of these propellers, a new propeller is designed by following the sequential design procedures with the design parameters such as hub-tip ratio, maximum camber and its position, and chord length distribution along the radial direction. The performance of the designed propeller is shown to be improved much comparing with those of both the U-80 and U-75 propellers.

  • A three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes solver is developed for the flow analysis around Micro Air Vehicle(MAV) designed by MACDL(Micro Aerodynamic Control and Design Lab), Seoul National Univ., Validations of this solver are presented for two cases, first flow over the circular cylinder with infinite length, second flow over infinite wing with wing section, E387 airfoil. Simultaneously, Wind Tunnel test is performed with Flatform Wire type sir-component balance and model designed by MACDL. The numerical results are also examined through comparison with experimental data.

  • A design methodology is presented to develop the hingeless control surfaces for MAV using adhesively bonded Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) actuators. These actuators have got the capability to deflect the trailing edge surfaces of the wing to attain the required maneuverability, besides achieving the set aerodynamic trim condition. A scheme involving design, analysis, fabrication and testing procedure has been adopted to realize the trailing edge morphing mechanism. The stiffness distribution of the composite MAV wing is tailored such that the induced deflection by piezoelectric actuation is approximately optimized. Through ground testing, the proposed concept has been demonstrated on a typical MAV structure. Electromechanical analysis is performed to evaluate the actuator performance and subsequently aeroelastic and 2D CFD analyses are carried out to see the functional requirements of wing trailing edge surfaces to behave as elevons. Efforts have been made to obtain the performance comparison of conventional control surfaces (elevons) with morphing wing trailing edge surfaces. A significant improvement in lift to drag ratio is noticed with morphed wing configuration in comparison to conventional wing. Further, it has been shown that the morphed wing trailing edge surfaces can be deployed as elevons for aerodynamic trim applications.

  • The SNU MAV has been designed through studies on highly efficient aerodynamic shape and propulsion system. The configuration of the vehicle was determined from conventional empirical equations, iterative wind tunnel tests and flight tests. The propeller shape was optimized with the various thrust tests and RSM(Response Surface Method) to obtain the higher efficient propulsion system. It was certified that the MAV could fly for over 17 minutes with a 210mAh battery. In addition, it showed good flight characteristics in both stability and controllability.

  • This paper presents the experimental investigation of a biplane micro air vehicle. The effects of geometric parameters, gap, stagger, and decalage angle are investigated at low Reynolds number (~150,000) in a low-speed wind tunnel. A rigid flat plate with an aspect ratio of one and square planform shape is used to evaluate all three geometric parameters. The side dimension of the single flat plate is 0.15 m. The goal is to find an optimal biplane configuration that should exceed monoplane performance by generating high lift and flying as slow as possible, in order to capture high-quality visual recordings. This configuration will directly help to fly at a lower velocity and to make tighter turns that are advantageous in restricted environments. The results show that the aerodynamic performance of the biplane MAV is significantly enhanced through the combination of gap and stagger effects. A performance comparison demonstrates the superiority of the optimal biplane configuration compared to a monoplane in cruise and glide phases. Moreover, no significant compromise is found for the range, endurance, and climb performance.

  • The motion of living organisms such as birds, fishes, and insects, has been analyzed for the purpose of the design of MAV(Micro Air Vehicle) and NAV(Nano Air Vehicle). In this research, natural motion was considered to be applied to the determination of the geometry and motion of AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). The flapping motion of a number of hydrofoil shapes in AUV was studied, and at the same time, the optimization of the hydrofoil shape and flapping motion was executed that allow the highest thrust and efficiency. The harmonic motion of plunging and pitching of NACA 4 digit series models, was used for the numerical analysis. The meta model was made by using the kriging method in Optimization method and the experimental points of 49 were extracted for the OA(Orthogonal array) in DOE(Design of experiments). Parametric study using this experimental points was conducted and the results were applied to MGA(Micro Genetic Algorithm). The flow simulation model was validated to be an appropriate tool by comparing with experimental data and the optimized shape and motion of AUV was turned out to produce highest thrust and efficiency.
