Spermatogenic Effect of Sulfur and Methyl Sulfonyl Methane in Rats

  • Sulfur has been used as a general physical strengthening agent from ancient times in Asia. On the basis of this point, we measured spermatogenic effect of sulfur and methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) which is used a functional food for arthritis in rats. MSM, a kind of organic sulfur, is used as an alternative of sulfur by some people. Sulfur was administered as a dietary supplement and MSM was administered orally as a solution to 7 week old rat for 6 weeks. All sulfur administered groups showed a significant dose dependent increase in the number of sperm in the testes compared with the control group. Moreover, a histological examination showed an apparent increase in the number of seminiferous tubular cell layers in the testes of the sulfur treated rats. However, there were no observed any increase of sperm in MSM dosing group. In sulfur treated rats, the weights of body, liver, spleen, kidney, testes and epididymides didn't show significantly differences compared with the control. Histopathological examination was not revealed any morphological change in the liver, spleen and kidney. Thus, sulfur may be effectively used to treat sperm deficiency of men, but not MSM.

Effects of dietary methyl sulfonyl methane and selenium on laying performance, egg quality, gut health indicators, and antioxidant capacity of laying hens

  • Objective: This study investigated the effects of dietary methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) and selenium (Se) on the laying performance, egg quality, gut health indicators, egg yolk Se content, and antioxidant markers in laying hens. Methods: One hundred ninety-two 73-wk-old laying hens were randomly divided into four groups with eight replicates of six hens each. Four diets were prepared in a 2×2 factorial arrangement with or without MSM and Se. The trial lasted for 12 wk. Results: There were no interaction effects or main effects (p>0.05) on laying performance and egg quality. However, feed intake increased in Se-fed hens (p = 0.051) and decreased in MSM-fed hens (p = 0.067) compared with that of hens in the control group. Dietary MSM increased (p<0.05) the ileal villus height and villus height:crypt ratio in hens compared with those receiving the non-supplemented control diet. Dietary MSM and Se did not affect the percentage of short-chain fatty acids in the ileal contents. Dietary Se enriched the Se content in egg yolk compared with that of the non-supplemented control diet (p<0.05). Dietary Se increased (p<0.05) glutathione peroxidase levels in the liver and serum samples compared to the control diet. The total antioxidant capacity in the liver increased (p<0.05) in laying hens that were fed MSM-supplemented diets than in hens fed the control diet. Dietary MSM significantly increased the relative superoxide dismutase levels in serum samples (p<0.05). Conclusion: Supplementation with either MSM or Se independently improved the antioxidant capacity of laying hens. Furthermore, dietary Se produced Se-enriched eggs, but this effect was neither additive nor synergistic with dietary MSM.

Effects of MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) Supplementation on Growth Performance and Digestibility of Ca and N in Pigs (식이유황 MSM(Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) 급여가 돼지의 성장 및 질소와 칼슘 소화율에 미치는 영향)

  • For the EXP 1, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane) supplementation on growth performance and nutrient digestibility in pigs. Sixty crossbred (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc) pigs (48.15±0.15㎏ average initial body weight) were used in a 35 days growth assay. Dietary treatments included 1) Control (basal diet), 2) T1 (basal diet+0.01% MSM) and 3) T2 (basal diet+0.02% MSM). For overall period, average daily gain, average daily feed intake and feed efficiency were not significantly different among the treatments (p&gt;0.05). Digestibilies of DM, N, Ca and P were not significant defferences (p&gt;0.05). For the EXP 2, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of MSM and antibiotic supplementation on growth performance and nutrient digestibility in pigs. One hundred crossbred (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc) pigs (33.85±0.15㎏ average initial body weight) were used in a 42 days growth assay. Dietary treatments included 1) Control (basal diet), 2) T1 (basal diet+0.05% neomycin sulfate, 0.055% oxytetracycline), 3) T2 (Con diet+0.01% MSM) and T3 (T1+0.01% MSM). For overall period, average daily gain and average daily feed intake of pigs fed T3, T2 diets were higher than those of CON diet (p&lt;0.05). Average daily gain was not significantly different between T2 and T3. However, food efficiency of pigs fed CON was the highest among the treatments (p&lt;0.05). Pigs fed T3 diet increased nutrient digestibility compared to other treatments (p&lt;0.05). In conclusion, the results suggest that the dietary addition of MSM and antibiotics into diets for pigs affect growth performance and nutrient digestibility.

Studies on the MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) Treatment Method of Soybeans (콩의 MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) 처리 방법에 관한 연구)

  • This experiment was conducted at the affiliated farm of the Suncheon University from 2022 to 2023 to investigate the growth, yield, and quality characteristics of soybeans based on the treatment method of Methyl Sulfony Methane (MSM) for the establishment of stable production practices. In the initial investigation of growth characteristics in 2022, an increasing trend in characteristics such as plant height, stem thickness, and branching index was observed as the treatment concentration increased from 50% to 200%. Yield components also followed the same trend, with the basal fertilization + top dressing 3 times at 200% treatment showing the highest yield at 355 kg·10a-1, with the highest number of pods. In the subsequent study to determine the optimal concentration exceeding 200% in 2023, growth characteristics showed a trend of 400% > 200% > 800%. The basal fertilization + top dressing 3 times at 400% treatment exhibited the longest plant height (106.7 cm) and the most branches (6). In terms of seed quality, this treatment also had the highest proportion (66.9%) of seeds with a diameter over 6.7 mm. Additionally, in yield components such as pods, seeds per pod, and 100-seed weight, the basal fertilization + top dressing 3 times at 400% treatment showed the highest values, resulting in a maximum yield of 374 kg·10a-1, representing a 23.4% increase compared to the control. Therefore, for the optimal production of high-quality soybeans, it is recommended to apply the treatment of basal fertilization + top dressing 3 times at 400% concentration, with top dressing occurring at 30-day intervals before harvest.

Synthesis of Indoline tri-isopropyl benzene sulfonamide as a potential new asymmetric catalyst (새로운 술폰아미드계의 촉매의 합성)

  • In order to develope new asymmetric catalyst, we synthesized the following new sulfonamide derivatives start from S-Indoline-2-Carboxylic Acid via the following 5 steps. Hydroxy methyl derivative(1) was thus treated with methane sulfonyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine as base to give mesylated derivative(2) in 85% of isolated yield. The mesylate compound (2) was treated with excess sodium azide to give Azido derivative (4) in 95% isolated yield. Azido compound (3) was then reduced to the corresponding amino derivative in near quntitative yield by the hydrogenation under hydrogen atmospere in the presence of catalytic amount of Pd-C. The amino derivative (4) was converted to its sulfonamide derivatives by the treatment of compound(4) with triisopropyl benzene sulfonyl chloride in the presence of triethyl amine as base. Finally t-BOC group of the compound(5) was removed by the treatement of excess Trifluoro-acetic acid in near quantitative yield to give the target sulfonamide derivative (7) .in this paper we prepared compound(6) in 49% overall yield via the 5 steps of synthesis starting from t-Boc- 2-hydroxy methyl indoline(1) which cab be easily prepared from commercial available S-indoline-2-carboxylic acid by known methods. we plan to apply this new catalyst for the asymmetric reduction , diels-alder reaction, aldolcondensation reaction in due courses.

The Effects of the Supplementation of Opuntia humifusa Water Extracts and Methyl Sulfonyl Methane on the Laying Productivity, Egg Quality and Sensory Characteristics (천년초 추출물과 식이유황의 첨가가 계란의 생산성, 품질 및 관능적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of Opuntia humifusa (OPH) extracts and methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) supplementations on the laying productivity, egg quality and sensory characteristics of eggs in hens. Six hundred forty, 35-wk-old Lohmann brown, laying hens were randomly divided into four groups: 1) water (control), 0.12% OPH extract, 0.1% MSM, and 0.12% OPH extract+0.1% MSM. They were mixed into the feed and given for 5 weeks. Egg production rates, egg weight, feed demand ratio were not significantly different among the groups. However, OPH or MSM decreased broken egg rates by increasing thickness and firmness of egg shell but they did not show the additive effects. In addition, OPH or MSM enhanced Haugh unit, an indicator of freshness of egg, and viscosity of egg white and egg yolk. OPH or MSM maintained the freshness of eggs better the control during their storage for 10 day at $4^{\circ}C$. However, OPH+MSM did not show additive effects in their freshness. Sensory test revealed that OPH or MSM decreased fishy taste and greasy flavor and they improved texture. Overall OPH or MSM enhanced the preference of eggs. In conclusion, the supplementation of either OPH or MSM enhances egg freshness and egg quality in laying hens but they should not be supplemented together due to no additive effects.

Changes in the Quality of Loin from Pigs Supplemented with Dietary Methyl Sulfonyl Methane during Cold Storage (식이유황(硫黃)을 급여한 돈육 등심의 저온저장 중 품질특성 변화)

  • This study was conducted to compare the quality of the pork from finishing pigs that were fed diets containing different levels of methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM). A total of 135 crossbred pigs $(Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc)$ were fed either with a control commercial diet or the control diet supplemented with 300- and 500-ppm MSM for 158d. The pigs were slaughtered at approximately 110kg live weight and were transported to the local slaughterhouse for electrical stunning followed by exsanguination. After the slaughter, the pork muscles were dissected from each carcass, placed in wrap package bags, and stored for 8d at $4^{\circ}C$. The TEARS values of the pigs that were fed MSM diets were significantly lower (p<0.05) compared with those of the pigs that were fed with non-supplemented diets. The Na, Mg, and Ca contents of the dietary MSM were significantly lower (p<0.05) than those of the non-supplemented diets, but the Fe, Cu, and Zn contents of the dietary MSM were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of the non-supplemented diets, and the increased level of MSM supplementation resulted in higher sulfur contents. There was no difference among the diets in terms of amino acid content. The dietary supplementation with MSM, however, led to increased saturated fatty acid and decreased unsaturated fatty acid (%) in the pork muscles (p<0.05). The sensory panelists recorded greater marbling and overall acceptability scores in the samples with 500-ppm-MSM dietary supplementation (p<0.05). These data suggest that supplementing pig diets with MSM can improve the quality of the pork and can enhance the eating quality because the sensory panels found that the pork from pigs that were fed an MSM-supplemented diet had better sensory characteristics.
