Effect of Red Ginseng Saponins on Intestinal Contractility (장평활근의 수축성에 대한 홍삼 Saponins의 효과)

  • Isolated rabbit jejunal segments were used to study the effects of ginseng total saponins (GTS) , protopanaxatriol saponins (PT) and protopanaxadiol saponins (PD) on intestinal contractility. GTS, PT and PD caused a dose-dependent decrease in intestinal spontaneous movements, and PT was the most efficacious of them. The effect of GTS, PT and PD were not blocked by pretreatment with phentolamine (10-6 M), yohimbine (10-6 M), d1-propranolol (10-6 M), naloxone(10-6∼10-5M), Nu-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (10-4 M), methylene blue (10-5M), and N-ethylmaleimide (10-4 M). However, pretreatment with tetraethylammonium chloride (3-10 mM) antagonized the effect of GTS, PT and PD. Furthermore, 4-amlnopyridine (1 mM) also inhibited the effect of GTS, PT and PD. The results suggest that GTS, PT and PD inhibited the spontaneous movements in isolated rebait jejunum by causing hyperpolarization through an activation of K+ channels directly.

  • In this study, three triterpenoids, two steroids and nine flavonoids were isolated from the leaves of Alnus firma Sieb. et Zucc. On the basis of spectroscopic evidences, the structures of these compounds were established as ${\beta}$-amyrin acetate, ${\beta}$-amyrin, ${\beta}$-sitosterol, alnustic acid methyl ester, ${\beta}$-sitosterol glucoside, pinocembrin, alnustinol, quercetin, quercetin-3-O-${\alpha}$-L-arabinofuranoside, quercetin-3-O-${\alpha}$-L -rhamnopyranoside, quercetin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside, myricetin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-galac-topyranoside, (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin.

Immunohistochemical Changes of Apoptotic Control Genes by Chronic Inhibition of Nitric Oxide in Rats

  • Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were orally administered with NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), which inhibits or blocks the production of nitric oxide from L-arginine in vascular endothelial cells and vessel tissue. We examined the effects of nitric oxide on some physiological changes such as blood pressure and heart rate, and confirms the apoptosis induced by the suppressed nitric oxide activity in the kidney. This study was performed to investigate correlation between the activities of nitric oxide and apoptosis by immunohistochemical changes of apoptotic control proteins with regulated chronic inhibition of nitric oxide. In the kidney from L-NAME-treated group, immunohistochemical reaction to the antigens of apoptosis inhibiting proteins such as bcl-2 and bcl-xL, exhibited a time-dependent reduction. The expression of apoptosis-inhibiting proteins such as bax and p53 increased expression in proportion to the duration of treatment. The most sensitive apoptosis regulating proteins to L-NAME were p53 in stimulation and bcl-2 in inhibition, respectively.

Origin of Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ Biosynthetic Heterogeneity in Higher Plants

  • In this study, the origin of the monovinyl chlorophyll a carboxylic biosynthetic route was investigated in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and com (Zea mays L.). Protoporphyrin IX accumulated in vivo or in vitro was found to be all of the divinyl form. Furthermore, the conversion of divinyl protoporphyrin IX to monovinyl protoporphyrin IX in vitro was not observed. In contrast, the biosynthesis and accumulation of monovinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX and its methyl ester occurred in etiolated leaves and divinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX was convertible to monovinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX in vitro. These results suggest that the monovinyl chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ carboxylic biosynthetic route in plants may originate from the divinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX pool.

Solution-processed Organic Trilayer Solar Cells Incorporating Conjugated Polyelectrolytes

  • We report solution-processed organic trilayer solar cells consisting of poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), a conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), wherein the effect CPE layer thickness on device properties was investigated. The current-voltage characteristics under illumination and dark as well as photoluminescence were characterized using various concentrations (0.02, 0.1, and 0.3wt%) of to deposit the CPE interlayer between the donor and acceptor layers. We also investigated the influence of molecular dipole moments in the trilayer solar cells by external stimuli. These results provide an experimental approach for investigating the influence of interfacial dipoles on solar cell parameters when placed between the donor and acceptor and allow us to obtaining fundamental information about the donor/acceptor interface in organic solar cells.

  • We report the origin of the improvement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of hybrid thin-film solar cells when a soluble C60 derivative, [6,6]-phenyl-$C_{61}$-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), is introduced as a hole-blocking layer. The PCBM layer could establish better interfacial contact by decreasing the reverse ark-saturation current density, resulting in a decrease in the probability of carrier recombination. The power conversion efficiency of this optimized device reached a maximum value of 8.34% and is the highest yet reported for hybrid thin-film solar cells.

ZnO nanostructures 이용한 유/무기 하이브리드 태양전지의 특성평가

  • 차세대 대체에너지로서 유기태양전지는 저비용, flexible한 장점이 있다. 그러나 에너지 효율이 상대적으로 낮아 고효율 유기태양전지 개발이 필요하다. 이 문제를 개선하기위해 본 실험에서는 전기화학적인 방법으로 ZnO 나노구조체 (nanowire, film)를 ITO위에 전착하였다. ZnO 나노구조체는 Poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT):[6,6]-Phnyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)에서 엑시톤된 전자와 홀의 charge collector와 electron path way로서 사용되었다. 유/무기 하이브리드 태양전지의 구조는 Ag/P3HT:PCBM/(A)/ITO로 사용하였으며 (A)는 (1) ZnO nanowire/ZnO film (2)ZnO nanowire (3)ZnO film으로, 각각의 효율을 측정하였다. 생성된 ZnO 나노구조를 FE-SEM, XRD, TEM, UV/vis로 분석하였고 AM1.5G SUN을 기준으로 하여 Solar simulator로 효율을 측정하였다. 측정결과 Jsc값의 증가를 효율이 향상됨을 알 수 있었다.

  • In the study, sensitizing dye was prepared by the reaction of 2-methyl-3-sulfopropyl-5-phenyl-benzoxazolium(inner salt) with ortho-ester in the presence of triethylamine. The product was identified by using various analytical tools such as Elemental analyzer, IR spectrophotometer, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, $^{1}H$-NMR spectrometer, TGA and DSC. Therefore, it was concluded that benzoxazolo carbocyanine dye can be used as green-sensitizing dye for the spectral sensitization of photographic emulsion.

수돗물 중 강력한 돌연변이유발물질인 MX에 대한 분석

  • 수돗물의 염소소독 과정에서 부식질의 초기 분해생성물인 MX(Mutagen X)는 수돗물의 전체 돌연변이유발성의 최고 60%까지 차지하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 존재하는 농도는 수 ng/L로 정량분석을 위해서는 resin을 사용하여 10 ~ 20L의 물을 농축하여야 한다. 이 연구에서 MX의 농축에 사용된 resin은 XAD-4와 XAD-7HP의 1:1 mixture이었으며, 사용 전에 Soxhlet extractor를 사용하여 ethyl acetate와 methanol로 각각 12시간씩 세척하였다. 15L의 물 시료는 37%의 염산으로 pH 2에 맞춘 후 직경 2cm의 유리관에 15cm의 높이로 채워진 resin을 40mL/min의 유속으로 통과시켰다. 유리관에 잔류하는 물은 질소가스로 대부분 불어 제거한 후 ethyl acetate 200mL를 가해 1mL/min의 유속으로 흘려주어 MX를 용출시킨 후 회전증발기로 5mL의 부피까지 농축시키고 10% H$_2$SO$_4$ in MeOH 0.1mL를 가하여 6$0^{\circ}C$에서 methyl ester화하였다. 과포화된 $Na_2$SO$_4$ 수용액 0.3ml를 가한 후 MTBE 0.3mL로 추출하고 GC/ECD로 분석하였다. MX의 회수율은 60% 이상이었으며 일부수돗물 시료에 대해 분석하였다.

Characteristics of direct transesterification using ultrasound on oil extracted from spent coffee grounds

  • Spent coffee grounds (SCG), the residue after brewing coffee beverage, is a promising biodiesel feedstock due to its high oil contents (15-20%). However, SCG should be pretreated to reduce the high free fatty acid content, which hampers transesterification reaction. To overcome this, we explored a direct transesterification reaction of SCG using ultrasound irradiation and identified the optimal sonication parameters. A high fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) content, up to 97.2%, could be achieved with ultrasound amplitude of 99.2 ㎛, irradiation time of 10 min, and methanol to oil ratio of 7:1 in the presence of potassium hydroxide concentration of 1.25 wt.%. In addition, we demonstrated that ultrasound irradiation is an efficient method to produce biodiesel from untreated SCG in a short time with less energy than the conventional mechanical stirring method. The physical and chemical properties of the SCG biodiesel met the requirements for an alternative fuel to the current commercial biodiesel.
