Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz (Lythraceae) is used in the treatment of various ailments in traditional medicines. DPPH activity guided fractionation and purification process was used to identify the free radical-scavenging components from the flowers of this plant. The methanolic extract of the plant was first fractionated into four extracts; namely, n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and water fractions. Among them, the ethyl acetate fraction was found to be the most effective and was further subjected to activity guided-fractionation and isolation procedures. After successive column chromatography on silica gel and Sephadex LH-20, gallic acid, which is responsible for the radical scavenging activity, was isolated and its structure was elucidated by spectral methods ($^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR) and by comparison with literature.
Cornus officinalis (Cornaceae) is primarily grown in Asian countries. The pericarp of C. officinalis (Corni Fructus) is a well-known traditional medicine with tonic, analgesic, and diuretic properties. We analyzed methanolic extracts of Corni Fructus (grown in Korea and China) by $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy. Metabolite profiling was performed to characterize the metabolic difference between different Corni Fructus origins (Korea or China). Principal components analysis revealed significant separation between Comus Fructus from different origins. The metabolites responsible for differences were identified using loading plots, coefficients plots, and variable influence on projection followed by t-tests. As a result, 16 metabolites were identified and quantified; tyrosine, acetate, sucrose, and malate differed the most between origins. These data suggest that NMR-based metabolomics can be used to identify differences between Corni Fructus samples obtained from different regions.

In the course of our researches for biologically active compound from Korean algae, purification of the methanolic extracts of two brown algae (Sagassum Sagamianum and Ishige Okamurae) collected off Jeju Island afforded an antioxidant polyphenolic compound (1). The molecular formular of 1 was established as C$\sub$24/H$\sub$16/ O$\sub$13/ on the basis of the FAB mass and $\^$13/C NMR spectrum. (omitted)
Ligularia stenocephala has been widely used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of lots of diseases such as asthma, arthritis, and jaundice. In this study, we evaluated the anti-nocicepitve activities of methanolic extract of L. stenocephala (MLS) using various pain models including thermal nociception as well as chemical nociception methods. MLS showed significant increase in latency time in the tail immersion test and hot-plate test. In addition, the number of acetic acid-induced abdominal constrictions was decreased by MLS. MLS also attenuated paw licking time in the formalin test. The combination test using naloxone revealed that the anti-nociceptive properties of MLS was not associated with opioid receptor activation. The present results demonstrate that MLS may possibly used as valuable analgesic agent for the treatment of nociceptive pain.
Quercus salicina has been widely used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. In macrophages, nitric oxide (NO) is released as an inflammatory mediator and has been proposed to be an important modulator of many pathophysiological conditions in inflammation. In the present study, the inhibitory effect of methanolic extracts of Q. salicina (QSM) on NO production in LPS-stimulated mouse (C57BL/6) peritoneal macrophages was investigated. QSM suppressed NO production without notable cytotoxiciy. QSM also exhibited down-regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression via attenuation of NF-${\kappa}B$ translocation to nucleus in rIFN-${\gamma}$ and LPS stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages. The present study strongly suggest that Q. salicina may be beneficial in diseases which related to macrophage-mediated inflammatory disorders.
The aqueous and methanolic extracts of 110 crude drugs were screened for hyaluronidase inhibitory activity using a microplate assay. Among them, MeOH extract of 15 crude drugs inhibited more than 80% of hyauluronidase activity at the concentration of 5mg/ml. The active principles of Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Rhei Rhizoma, Ephedrae Herba, Pteropi Faeces and Ginseng Radix alba were transferred into organic solvents.
Excessive or long term ingestion of alcohol may cause hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatic tumor and so on. Aldehyde and active form of free oxygen that are metabolites of alcohol in liver are the cause of liver cell damage. The main system of alcohol metabolism is composed of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) and cytochrome P450. In connection with in vivo alcohol metabolism, more than one hundred natural products were screened for inhibition or activation of alcohol dehydrogenase. As a results, we found significant inhibition ($IC_50$) of ADH by methanolic extracts of Puerariae Radix ($61.2{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$), Glycyrrhizae Radix ($105.0{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$), Cinnamomi Ramulus ($7.0{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$), Rhei Rhizoma ($36.7{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$), Mori Cortex Radicis ($106.2{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$), Chrysanthemi Flos ($112.2{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$), Erycibes Caulis ($36.7{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$), and Scutellariae Radix ($122.5{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$)
The Hexane Extract (HE) and Ethyl Acetate Soluble Fraction of the Methanolic Extract (EASFME) of the fruit pulp of Momordica dioica Roxb. (Cucurbitaceae) was evaluated for its anti-hepatotoxic activity in rats. Acute hepatotoxicity was induced by administering paracetamol (2 g/kg, p.o.) for 3 days. The extracts, at a dose of 400 mg/kg (p.o.) administered for 7 days exhibited a significant therapeutic effect by lowering Serum Glutamate Oxaloacetate Transaminase (SGOT), Serum Glutamate Pyruvate Transaminase (SGPT), Serum Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) and Serum bilirubin and increasing the serum protein levels. These biochemical observations were supplemented by histopathological examination of the liver sections. The activity of extract was also comparable to the standard drug Silymarin, which is a well-known natural anti-hepatotoxic drug.
Veronica peregrina (Scrophylariaceae) has been widely used as a Korean traditional medicine for the treatment of various pathological conditions including infection, hemorrhage and gastric ulcer. In the current study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of methanolic extracts of V. Peregrina (VPM) on the LPS-mediated nitric oxide (NO) production in mouse (C57BL/6) peritoneal macrophages. NO production was significantly down-regulated by the treatment of VPM dose dependently. To evaluate the mechanism of the inhibitory action of VPM on NO production, we performed iNOS enzyme activity assay and checked the change of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) levels by Western blotting. Although VPM did not affect iNOS enzyme activity, iNOS protein expression was attenuated by VPM indicating VPM inhibits NO production via suppression of iNOS enzyme expression. In addition, VPM attenuated the expression of another pro-inflammatory mediator such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in a dose dependent manner. We also found that VPM can reduce trypsin-induced paw edema in mice. Based on this study, we suggest that V. peregrina may be beneficial in diseases which related to macrophage-mediated inflammatory disorders.
