High temperature high cycle and low cycle fatigue deformation behavior of automotive heat resistant aluminum alloys (A356 and A319 based) were investigated in this study. The microstructures of both alloys were composed of primary Al-Si dendrite and eutectic Si phase. However, the size and distribution for eutectic Si phase varied: a coarse and inhomogeneous distributed was observed in alloy B (A319 based). A brittle intermethallic phase of ${\alpha}-Fe\;Al_{12}(Fe,Mn)_3Si_2$ was detected only in B alloy. Alloy B exhibited high fatigue life only under a high stress amplitued condition in the high cycle fatigue results, whereas alloy A showed high fatigue life when stress was lowered. With regard to the low-cycle fatigue result ($250^{\circ}C$) showing higher fatigue life as ductility increased, alloy A demonstrated higher fatigue life under all of the strain amplitude conditions. Fractographic observations showed that large porosities and pores near the outside surface could be the main factor in the formation of fatigue cracks. In alloy B. micro-cracks were formed in both the brittle intermetallic and coarse Si phasese. These micro-cracks then coalesced together and provided a path for fatigue crack propagation. From the observation of the differences in microstructure and fractography of these two automotive alloys, the authors attempt to explain the high-temperature fatigue deformation behavior of heat resistant aluminum alloys.
Magnesium alloys are drawing a lot of attention and have been extensively studied. The major obstacle to the practical application of the alloys is the poor formability at room temperature, originating basically from the insufficient number of slip system. Development of a proper texture is one promising solution to improve the formability. In the present work, after extrusion and full annealing, microstructures, texture developments and tensile properties of AZ31 Mg alloys are studied. After full annealing strong <1010>||ED fiber texture and weak <1120>+<1230>||ED fiber texture (c-axes in the radial direction) were developed. The textures are distinctly influencing the tensile properties, which can be understood in terms of the activation of basal slip modes. With the random orientation, which is developed in the $45^{\circ}$ sample to the extrusion direction, the better workability can be achieved at room temperature.
Physical properties of water, such as dielectric constant and ionic product, significantly vary with the density of water. In the supercritical conditions, since density of water widely varies with pressure, pressure has a strong influence on physical properties of water. Dielectric constant represents a character of water as a solvent, which determines solubility of an inorganic compound including metal oxides. Dissociation equilibrium of an acid is also strongly dependent on water density. Dissociation constant of acid rises with increased density of water, resulting in drop of pH. Density of water and the density-related physical properties of water, therefore, are the major governing factors of corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking of metals in supercritical aqueous solutions. This paper discusses importance of "physical properties of water" in understanding corrosion and cracking behavior of alloys in supercritical water environments, based on experimental data and estimated solubility of metal oxides. It has been pointed out that the water density can have significant effects on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of metals in supercritical water, when dissolution of metal plays the key role in the cracking phenomena.
We investigated the cryogenic temperature plasticity of a bulk amorphous alloy. Experiments showed that as temperature decreases, the plasticity of the alloy increases, such that the alloy exhibited ~20% of plastic strain when tested at $-196^{\circ}C$. This enhancement in the plasticity at cryogenic temperatures was associated with the formation of abundant shear bands distributed uniformly over the entire surface of the sample. Nonetheless, the serrations, the characteristic feature of the plastic deformation of amorphous alloys, were unclear at $-196^{\circ}C$. In this study, both the enhanced plasticity and the unclear serrations exhibited by the amorphous alloy at cryogenic temperatures were clarified by exploring shear banding behaviors in the context of the velocity and the viscosity of a propagating shear band.
Adsorption mechanisms of diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (DIBDTPI) and diisobutyl monothiophosphinate (DIBMTPI) on gold and gold-silver alloys (80:20 and 50:50) have been studied. The adsorption mechanisms on gold-silver alloys can be explained by the EC mechanism involving an electron transfer step and a chemical reaction step. Thus, the adsorption should be controlled by the E of the electrochemical oxidation of the electrode involved and the pK of the metal collector complex. Both di- and mono- thiophosphinate adsorb on 50:50 Au-Ag alloy at lower potential than on 80:20 Au-Ag alloy surface. There are no significant differences between the reactivities of DIBDTPI and DIBMTPI with precious metals except that the dithio- compound can be oxidized to dimer on gold at high potentials, while the monothio- homologue cannot. In this regard, DIBDTPI may be a better surface active reagent for pure gold than DIBMTPI.
This study examined the role of excess free volume on the corrosion resistance of an amorphous alloy. Corrosion behaviors were monitored on the amorphous alloys, of which amount of free volume was controlled via the isothermal annealing below the glass transition temperature, using immersion tests and potentiodynamic polarization tests in HCl aqueous solutions. It was found that the corrosion resistance of the amorphous alloy is improved by reducing the amount of excess free volume. The possible reason explaining the experimental result was discussed from the viewpoint of the internal energy associated with the annihilation of excess free volume.
The opaque porcelain layer of porcelain-fused-to-metal(PFM) restoration is critical for the success of PFM restoration because it is the first layer placed over the treated alloy. But, the methods of opaquing technique have not been confirmed. Usually, the one layer method and two layer method have been used for the application of opaque porcelain. In the past, alloys with porcelain veneers which have been used successfully have contained various precious metals. Recent increase in the cost of precious metals stimulates considerable interest in nonprecious alloys. Although nickel-chromium alloys and nickel-chromium-beryllium alloys have been widely used, the use of cobalt-chromium alloys would be gradually increased with elimination of any potential risk of nickel-related allergic responses and/or beryllium-related toxic responses. This investigation examined one- and two-layer opaque porcelain applications to determine the effect on the bond strength of titanium added cobalt-chromium metal ceramic alloy. Bond strength of Ceramco II porcelain to titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy(2Dentitan) and gold-platinum-palladium alloy(Degudent H) were evaluated by direct shear bond strength test with Instron universal testing machine. The results were as follows; 1. When the mean shear bond strength of each experimental group were compared in $0.25cm^2$ unit area, the titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy/two layer method exhibited the greatest strength(79.7kg), followed by titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy/one layer method(76.2kg), gold-platinum-palladium alloy/two layer method(71.4kg), gold-platinum-palladium alloy/one layer method(64.2kg). 2. No significant differences in bond strength were recorded between the two opaquing techniques for gold-platinum-palladium alloy and titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy. 3. No significant differences in bond strength were recorded between the gold-platinum-palladium alloy and the titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy.

Super austenitic stainless steels shows the high PRE (Pitting Resistance Equivalent) number and the good corrosion resistance. This work controlled the Co contents in Fe-31Cr-1.7Mo-27Ni-0.25N alloys to elucidate the effect of cobalt contents on the biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. Increasing Co contents, the hardness of the annealed alloys tends to be reduced. In aged alloys, cobalt decreased the increments of hardness by aging treatment. Cobalt decreased the critical pitting temperature (CPT) in 6% $FeCl_3$ + 1% HCl solution, but improved the anodic polarization behavior in Hanks' balanced salt solution and artificial saliva solution. Repassivation rate in artificial body solutions was improved by increasing cobalt contents, but didn't show the linear relationship to PRE number of the alloys. The experimental alloys showed the non-cytotoxicity because of its high corrosion resistance.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of each metal in non-precious metal alloys dental casting, still used even banned for use and trade by the law, for oral health. Methods: Two kinds of metal alloys were analyzed. One was Ticonium 100 for removable prosthesis and the other was Rexillium V for dental porcelain. Two samples of each metal alloy were made in 0.5g, 1.0g, and 1.5g. Total number of samples were 12. Two kinds of lactic acid Solution, pH7 and pH4.6, were injected into each samples. After injection, each samples had been for 21days ${\pm}$ 1 hour in the water tank of which temperature was $37^{\circ}C$. The level of metal was measured in each sample by inductively couplled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer. Results: In both metal alloys, metals, chrome, nickel, beryllium, and molybdenum, were founded. In Ticonium 1000, the highest level of nickel was 2.531ppm in 1.5g pH4.6 sample while the highest level of nickel was 4.062ppm in 1.5g pH4.6 sample of Rexillium V. In chemical composition of these methal alloys, chrome(14~17%) was much more than beryllium(1.95~1.99%) and molybdenum(5.0~9.0%) but berllium and molybdenum were founded more than chrome in samples. Therefore, chrome showed better anti-corrosion than other metal alloys. In both metal alloys, more metals were founded in higher pH level and more mass. Levels of chrome was significantly different in samples of both metal alloys in each pH level(p<0.05). Levels of nickels was significantly different in samples of both metal alloys in each pH level(p<0.05). Conclusion: For oral health, further studies are needed in nickel-chrome metal alloy and cobalt metal alloy of non-beryllium in addittion to beryllium metal alloy and also long-term studies needed in various period and other non-percious metal alloys for dental casting.
Fe-(10, 20, 30, 40) wt%Cr alloys were corroded in $Na_2SO_4$ salts ($m.p.=884^{\circ}C$) at $800{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 3-300 hrs. Their corrosion resistance increased with an increase in Cr content owing to the formation of slowly growing $Cr_2O_3$. During corrosion, $Na_2SO_4$ dissociated and reacted with the alloys to form $Cr_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$. Since $Fe_2O_3$ dissolved fast into the salts, most of the scales consisted primarily of $Cr_2O_3$. Inside the scale, a small amount of sulfides also existed. The oxidation, dissolution and detachment of the formed scales occurred significantly.
