A meshfree method based on adaptive refinement method and its application for deformation analysis (변형해석을 위한 적응적 세분화방법에 기초한 무요소법)

  • The finite element method(FEM) presents some limitations when the mesh becomes highly distorted. For analysis of metal forming processes with large deformation, the conventional finite element method usually requires several remeshing operations due to severe mesh distortion. The new computational method developed in the recent years, usually designated by meshfree method, offers an attractive approach to avoid those time-consuming remeshing efforts. This new method uses a set of points to represent the problem domain with no need of an additional mesh. Also this new generation of computational method provides a higher rate of convergence than that of the conventional finite element methods. One of the promising applications of meshfree methods is the adaptive refinement for problems having multi-scale nature. In this study, an adaptive node generation procedure is proposed and also to illustrate the efficiency of proposed method, several numerical examples are presented.

Control of the Casting Defects in the Gravity Tilt Pour Casting Process (경동식 중력주조법에 의한 주조결함 제어)

  • Gravity tilt pour casting can effectively guarantee the reduction of various casting defects by controlling the rotation speed and the tilting angle of the mold during tilt pouring. The relationship between casting process parameters and the soundness of castings has been investigated in order to determine the optimum process variables in the gravity tilt pour casting process. In order to evaluate the effect of rotation speed on mold filling patterns, a video camera was employed to visualize the in-situ fluid flow behavior of the molten metal, and the relevant fluid velocity was also estimated. X-ray and mechanical tests were also performed to evaluate the effect of fluid velocity on casting quality. With the rotation speed lower than 0.5 r.p.m., which is nearly corresponding to the critical velocity of stability in the fluid flow, sound castings were obtained without having any casting defects. It can be concluded that the gravity tilt pour casting process is an effective process for manufacturing sound casting products with enhanced physical and mechanical properties.

  • They use a Ball End-mill in order to manufacturing sculptured surface when making metal mold, mold, cars and aircraft. In the work of a Ball End-mill case, customers do not often satisfied with manufacturing precision. Eventually, they have to re-work for the purpose of meeting manufacturing precision. There are resulted in lots of loss, whereby, in terms of both time and costs. The reasons of tolerance reducing manufacturing precision are thermal strain, the surface is damaged because of increasing cutting force and tool wear, tool deflection etc.. We focus on, however, manufacturing precision caused due to deflection of tool.

  • The progressive die is processing methods that can improve the productivity for sequentially transferring while continuously producing in multiple processes. In this study was carried out the die analysis through the load analysis acting on the terminal die and sheet metal forming also the study was carried out with respect to optimized die design for the terminal die and progressive die manufacturing using the CimatronE Die Design.

  • Plastic microlenses play an important role in reducing the size, weight, and the cost of the systems in the fields of optical data storage and optical communication. In the present study, plastic microlens arrays were fabricated using micro-compression molding process. The design and fabrication procedures for mold insert were simplified by using silicon instead of metal. A simple but effective micro compression molding process, which uses polymer powder, were developed for microlens fabrication. The governing process parameters were temperature and pressure histories and the micromolding process was controlled such that the various defects developing during molding process were minimized. The radius and magnification ratio of the fabricated microlens were $125{\mu}m$ and over 3.0, respectively.

  • The horizontal continuous casting process with the heating mold was adopted for fabricating defect-free 4043 Al alloy rods of 3.2m dia. with mirror surfaces. These rods were drawn into 2.4mm dia. rods for GTAW welding. The GTAW welding tests were carried out by use of these welding rods with 6061 Al alloy as a base metal. After welding, the X-ray tests, tensile strength tests, bending tests, and microstructural analysis of welded zone and HAZ were carried out. The results represented that the welding rods with good surfaces and welding properties could be made by the horizontal continuous casting, and followed by the drawing process.

  • In the sheet metal forming using a high speed press machine, driving device, such as crank, link, and knuckle mechanism, has to be designed in consideration of impact at a moment when press die contact with material, because the impact affects a dimensional accuracy of products and a life span of press die. In this study, dynamic analysis was performed using numerical simulation in order to verify the impact reduction effect for proposed double knuckle mechanism by estimating rolling and pitching moment of slide.

  • In sheet metal forming process, drawing is typical process. And the key factor of drawing is blank holding force (BHF) A low BHF can cause wrinkling, whereas a high BHF can cause fracture during a deep drawing process. Thus, formability can be influenced by application appropriate BHF. In this study, a variable blank holding force (VBHF) is applied to extend the forming limit by avoiding both wrinkling and fracture. To determine VBHF in drawing process, numerical simulations and statistical analysis are carried out using commercial FEM software.

A Study on the Wear Resistant Property in Hyper-eutectic Al-Si Alloy (과공정 Al-Si 합금의 내마모성 연구)

  • The wear resistance of Hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloy, have recently been noticed as a new automobile material, was investigated. For the purpose of developing wear resistant Al-Si alloy, some factors which attribute to wear resistance are examined as follows; refinement of primary Si particle during solidification, and effect of refinement on wear resistance and other mechanical properties. The most effective refinement was accomplished by adding both NaF and S, and this improve wear-resistance in abrasive wear type. The wear losses of specimens cast in metal mold were ruduced to 80% of those in sand mold. T6 heat treatment increases hardness, which resulted in reduction of wear loss about $3{\sim}18%$.
