Metal hydride is suitable for safe storage of hydrogen. The hydrogen storage kinetics of the metal hydride are highly dependent on its heat transfer characteristics. This study presents a metal hydride-expended graphite composite with improved thermal conductivity and its hydrogen storage kinetics. To improve the heat transfer characteristics, a metal hydride was mixed and compacted with a high thermal conductivity additive. As the hydrogen storage material, AB5 type metal hydride La0.9Ce0.1Ni5 was used. As an additive, flakes-type expended graphite was used. With improved heat transfer characteristics, the metal hydride-expended graphite composite stores hydrogen four times faster than metal hydride powder.

Nanostructured materials have attracted considerable research interest over the recent decades because of their potential applications in nanoengineering and nanotechnology. On the other hand, the developments in nanotechnology are strongly dependent on the availability of new materials with novel and engineered morphologies. Among the novel nanomaterials reported thus far, composite nanofibers (NFs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years. In particular, metal oxide NFs have great potential for the development of gas sensors. Highly sensitive and selective gas sensors can be developed by using composite NFs owing to their large surface area and abundance of grain boundaries. In composite NFs, gas sensing properties can be enhanced greatly by tailoring the conduction channel and surface properties by compositional modifications using the synergistic effects of different materials and forming heterointerfaces. This review focuses on the gas sensing properties of composite NFs synthesized by an electrospinning (ES) method. The synthesis of the composite NFs by the ES method and the sensing mechanisms involved in different types of composite NFs are presented along with the future perspectives of composite NFs.
Metal matrix composites with whisker reinforcements have significant potential for demanding mechanical applications including defense, aerospace, and automotive industries. Especially, metal matrix composites, which are reinforced with aluminum borate whisker, have been used for the part of piston head in automobile because of good specific strength and wear resistance. Aluminum alloy-based metal matrix composites with whisker reinforcements have been produced using squeeze casting method, which is kind of an infiltration method. In this study, AC4CH-based metal matrix composites with $Al_{18}B$_4$O_{33}$ reinforcement have been produced using squeeze casting method, after T6 heat treatment, we evaluated mechanical properties of matrix and MMC composite were evaluated.

The static strength and fatigue crack resistance of the aircraft skin structures depend on the materials used and joint type. Most of the commercial aircraft's skin panel structures are made from aluminium alloy and carbon fibre reinforced epoxy. In this study, the fatigue resistance of four joint configurations (metal/metal, metal/composite, composite/composite and composite/metal) with riveted, adhesive bonded, and hybrid joining techniques are investigated with experiments and finite element analysis. The fatigue tests were tension-tension because of the typical nature of the loads on aircraft skin panels susceptible of experimenting fatigue. Experiment results suggest that the fatigue life of hybrid joints is superior to adhesive bonded joints, and these in turn much better than conventional riveted joints. Thanks to the fact that, for hybrid joints, the adhesive bond provides better load distribution and ensures load-carrying capacity in the event of premature adhesive failure while rivets induce compressive residual stresses in the joint. Results from FE tool ABAQUS analysis for adhesive bonded and hybrid joints agrees with the experiments. From the analysis, the energy release rate for adhesive bonded joints is higher than that of hybrid joints in both opening (mode I) and shear direction (mode II). Most joints show higher energy release rate in mode II. This indicates that the joints experience fatigue crack in the shear direction, which is responsible for crack opening.
In recent years, the study of metal matrix composite has increased specially, aluminum alloy, research and development are briskly progress to find new metal matrix composite. this study is following the this purpose; This study is used metal matrix composite that was produced by matrix, AC4CH. and reinforcement $A_{18}B_4O_{33}$ metal matrix composite to add $Al_2O_3,\;TiO_2$ for strengthen of binding together among the Whisker. Each Metal matrix composite is produced using the squeeze casting method. Fracture tounghness test was in accordance with the provisions of ASTM E399; Specimen was produced half-size CT specimen W=25mm, B=12.5mm, Cross head speed 0.05mm/min in room temperature. The plane strain fracture toughness $K_{IC}$ is $8.7MPa-m^{0.5}$ for $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$/AC4CH., $9.28MPa-m^{0.5}$ for $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$/AC4CH added $TiO_2$. and $Al_2O_3$ but AC4CH alloy was violated the critical stipulated by ASTM standard for a valid measurement of $K_{IC}$. In case of, it was performed $I_{IC}$ test instead of $K_{IC}$ based on ASTM E 1820
The goal of this study is to replace the current forward 2-piece propeller shaft of 8 ton large truck made of steel with 1-piece composite propeller shaft. A low cost Glass/Epoxy composite propeller shafts were successfully developed, which satisfy requirements such as the capacity of static torque transfer, fatigue strength and bending natural frequency. Devising secure joining method of a composite tube and metal yoke was the most critical issue in successful development of a high torque composite propeller shaft. In this study, joining method using thermal interference fit was adopted for composite to metal joint. Optimum conditions of heating temperature and interference level of thermal interference fit were determined from thermal stress analysis using 3D finite element method. Static torsion test, fatigue test, RPM and balance test were performed to verify the design.
Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. In FGM layer, material properties are assumed to be varied continuously in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of a ceramic and metal. The 3-D finite element model is adopted by using an IS-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties in the thickness direction. Numerical results are compared with those of the previous works. In addition, the displacements, the tensile stresses and the compressive stresses are analyzed for the variation of FGM thickness ratio and volume fraction distribution.Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method.
Metal/intermetallic laminated composites have been manufactured by SHS reactions between Ni and Al elemental metal foils. Microstructure showed that the intermetallic volume fraction was 55%, 45%, 35% in the 1:1, 2:1, 4:1 thickness ratio(Ni:Al) specimen and the main phases of the intermetallic were transformed from $Ni_2Al_3$ to NiAl when the thickness ratio was increased. Tensile strength and elongation were increased when the volume fraction of Ni metallic phase was increased. Under assumptions of isostrain condition, the tensile strength of metal/intermetallic laminated composites didn't obey the ROM due to the thermal residual stress and this was confirmed by X-ray residual stress analysis. Fracture toughness results by the SENB test showed R-curves with upward curvature based on LSB condition. Bridging stress based on LSB condition was determined by the curve fitting analysis, In-situ observed microstructure during fracture test showed that the various bridging mechanism such as crack bridging, crack branching and ductile failure of metallic layer were occurred
