Bioactive titanium metal can be prepared by simple 5M-NaOH treatment and subsuquent heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ to form an amorphous sodium titanate on its surface. In the present study, mechanism of apatite formation on the titanium metal was investigated by examining its surface compositional and structural changes in a simulated body fluid. The apatite formation on the metal was found to proceed in the sequence of 1)$Na^+$ ion release from the sodium titanate to form hydrated titania abundant in Ti-OH groups, 2) early and selective binding of calcium ions with the Ti-OH groups to form a calcium titanate, and 3) late binding of phosphate ions to make apatite nucleation and growth. This indicates that Ti-OH groups do not directly induce the apatite nucleation, but via formation of a calcium titanate.
To assess the effect of chitosan complex with metal ion on various pathogenic bacteria, the antibacterial activities were investigated. Arsenic, bismuth, calcium, iodine, iron, mercury, platinum, and silver were used as a metal ion. Staphylococcus aureus. Streptococcus mutans, Helicobacter pylori, Propionibacterium acnes and human saliva were examined. It was demonstrated that metal ions associated chitosan showed aggregation activities on various pathogens.

The present studies were undertaken to prepare calcium acetate from sea-mussel shell and then, to investigate the calcium absorption ratio for calcium acetate by using young albino rate male. Purities such as chloride, nitrate, nitrate, sulfate, phosphate and heavy metal passed to test as reagent grade and calcium acetate assay was 99.0%. No significant differences in the body weight gain between calcium acetate group, calcium gluconate group and calcium carbonate group were not recognized. Diet consumptions of calcium acetate group was almost similar with calcium gluconate group and calcium carbonate group. It was found that absorption rate of calcium acetate was $57.68{\pm}0.83%,\;58.08{\pm}0.94%$ and was $2.0{\sim}3.0%$ high than calcium gluconate and calcium carbonate group.
Metal fixation systems for cranial bone flaps cut by a drill are convenient devices for cranioplasty, but cause several complications. We use modified craniotomy using a fine diamond-coated threadwire saw (diamond T-saw) to reduce the bone defect, and osteoplasty calcium phosphate cement without metal fixation. We report our outcomes and tips of this method. A total of 78 consecutive patients underwent elective frontotemporal craniotomy for clipping of unruptured intracranial aneurysms between 2015 and 2019. The follow-up periods ranged from 13 to 66 months. The bone fixation state was evaluated by bone computed tomography (CT) and three-dimensional CT (3D-CT). The diamond T-saw could minimize the bone defect. Only one wound infection occurred within 1 week postoperatively, and no late infection. No pain, palpable/cosmetically noticeable displacement of the bone flap, fluid accumulations, or other complications were observed. The condition of bone fixation and the cosmetic efficacy were thoroughly satisfactory for all patients, and bone CT and 3D-CT demonstrated that good bone fusion. No complication typical of metal fixation occurred. Our method is technically easy and safety, and achieved good mid-term bone flap fixation in the mid-term course, so has potential for bone fixation without the use of metal plates.
There are several remediation technologies for heavy metal contaminated soils but increasing cost limits the application of the technology if the contaminated area is large. Therefore, stabilization, which blocks the release of heavy metals or makes slow the release, is one of the applicable technology for the heavy metal contaminated soil. Current study is an applicability test for a smelter area with various stabilizer such as magnetite, hematite, zeolite-A, zeolite-X, zeolite-Y, zinc oxide, calcium oxide, carbon trioxide, manganese oxide, manganese dioxide, fish bone, sodium phosphate. The soil contaminated with arsenic, lead, copper, nickel, and zinc could not be stabilized only one stabilizer which is known to have stability for certain metal. Many of the stabilizer works for a few metal but not all of the heavy metal. In several cases, stabilizers increase the release of the other metals while they stabilize some metals. In general, the stabilizing efficiency was increased with time. For Ni, Pb, calcium oxide, carbon trioxide, manganese oxide had good stabilizing effect in water extractable portion. For Cu, manganese oxide, zeolite showed good results especially in the exchangeable portion of the sequential extraction. For As, magnetite had good ability but most of the metal oxide which showed good result for other heavy metals increased with the release of As. Current study suggest that multiple stabilizers are needed for the contaminated soil and dose of the stabilizer and stabilizing time should be carefully considered for the soil contaminated with various metals.
A simultaneous determination method of alkaline earth metals was attempted with the conventional high performance liquid chromatographic system. Four cations, namely, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium ion, were injected directly as aqueous solution into an eluent containing copper chloride solution and and were successfully separated and determined on a separating column (Zipax SCX, 4.6 mm i.d. ${\times}25$ cm length, Du Pont, USA) by using a variable wavelength UV detector. The linear calibration curves were obtianed in the range from $1.0{\times}10^{-4}M$ to $5.0{\times}10^{-4}M$ and the correlation coefficient of the calibration curve for each metal of magnesium and calcium in tap water. Alkaline earth metals were determined with the conventional high performance liquid chromatographic system.
It is important to study hydrazine because of the development of new uses for its derivatives. The Rasching method is the only satisfactory one for synthesizing hydrazine; it involves the oxidation of ammonia by sodium hypochlorite in the presence of some such catalyst as gelatin. Calcium hypochlorite was substituted for the sodium hypochlorite particularly in this work, applying agar-agar as catalyst. The results of the experiments are as follow: 1. The yield is proportional to the mole-ratio of ammonia to available chlorine in calcium hypochlorite and about 60% is obtained when the ratio is 20. 2. Agar-agar can be used as a catalyst and its proper concentration in the solution is 0.005%. 3. Proper concentration of available chlorine in the reaction solution is 0.23 mole/l. 4. The most effective condition for the reaction is a temperature of $60{\sim}65^{\circ}C.$ maintained for $20{\sim}25min$. 5. The reaction takes place equally well in either an open or closed container. 6. When calcium hypochlorite is applied in place of sodium hypochlorite, the yield of hydrazine is increased as much as 17%. 7. The yield of hydrazine is decreased by eliminating the suspension of $Ca(OH)_2$ which results from the use of calcium hypochlorite. 8. When $Ca(OH)_2$ is added to Rasching process, the yield of hydrazine is raised normally. 9. The fact that some metal ions, such as $Cu^{++},$ inhibit the formation of hydrazine was proved. 10. The suspension of $Ca(OH)_2$ acted as a remarkable adsorbent for $Cu^{++}$ like gelatin. The suspension of $Ca(OH)_2$ which results from the use of calcium hypochlorite acts as a catalyst, absorbing metal ions, to increase the yield of hydrazine. So I think that calcium hypochlorite is a more efficient oxidant than sodium hypochlorite in hydrazine syntheses.

In this study, column tests using relatively uniform Jumunjin sand media were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of calcium polysulfide (CaSx, CPS) in removing high concentration of Zn2+ in groundwater. The injected CPS solution reacted rapidly with Zn2+ in artificial groundwater and effectively reduced Zn2+ by more than 99% through metal sulfide precipitation. Since the density (d = 1.27 g/cm3 ) of CPS solution was greater than that of water, CPS solution settled down rapidly while capturing Zn2+ and formed stable CPS layer similar to dense nonaqueous phase liquid. Mass balance analysis on Zn2+ in CPS solution suggested that CPS solution effectively reacted with Zn2+ to form metal sulfide precipitates except for high groundwater seepage velocity of 400 cm/d. With greater groundwater seepage velocity, injected CPS did not completely dissolve at the CPS-water interface, but a partially-misible CPS layer continuously moved and reacted with Zn2++ in the direction of groundwater flow. Since hydraulic conductivity (Kh) decreased slightly due to the generated metal precipitates in the inter-pores of media, injection of CPS solution should be optimized to prevent clogging. As evidenced by both XRF and SEM/EDS results, ZnS precipitates were clearly observed through the reaction between the CPS solution and Zn2+. Further study is warranted to evaluate the feasibility of CPS to remove high-concentration heavy metalcontaminated groundwater in complex and heterogeneous media.
A volumetric method of the determination of calcium carbonate and calcium fluoride in fluorspar concentrate is described. The carbonate is converted into solution by treatment of the sample in HNO$_3$-acetone (l% by volume) mixture, and the fluoride by treating the residue with H$_3BO_3$-HCl mixture. The calcium in the solution is determined volumetrically using EDTA standard solution. The selective dissolution of calcium carbonate by HNO$_3$-acetone mixture is superior to Bidtel's acetic method and little correction for the dissolution of calcium fluoride is needed. Triethanolamine is found to be superior to KCN in masking heavy metal ions.
E. coli was tested for their ability to uptake cadmium intracellularly, and the effect of zinc and calcium on cadmium toxicity to E. coli was observed. In addition, the effect of zinc and calcium on the uptake of cadimium was also studied. This study showed that living E. coli cells took up more cadmium than the dead cells. E. coli in the log phase uptake cadimiumm more actively than E. coli in the stationary phase. These results suggested that there may be metabolic reactions or compounds which encourage the uptake of cadimium. This study also showed that cadimium was sequestered by cell components of which molecular weight is about 30,000. Adding of zinc and calcium chloride reduced cadmium toxicity in E. coli and encouraged intracellular uptake by E coli. However adding of heavy metal solutions helped the microorganisms to adsorb more cadmium. Extremely high or low concentrations of zinc, however, did not affect cell viability.
