  • This paper presents a novel symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm to optimize both real power loss (RPL) and voltage stability limit (VSL) of a transmission network by controlling the variables such as unified power flow controller (UPFC) location, UPFC series injected voltage magnitude and phase angle and transformer taps simultaneously. Mathematically, this issue can be formulated as nonlinear equality and inequality constrained multi objective, multi variable optimization problem with a fitness function integrating both RPL and VSL. The symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm is a nature inspired optimization method based on the biological interactions between the organisms in ecosystem. The advantage of SOS algorithm is that it requires a few control parameters compared to other meta-heuristic algorithms. The proposed SOS algorithm is applied for solving optimum control variables for both single objective and multi-objective optimization problems and tested on New England 39 bus test system. In the single objective optimization problem only RPL minimization is considered. The simulation results of the proposed algorithm have been compared with the results of the algorithms like interior point successive linear programming (IPSLP) and bacteria foraging algorithm (BFA) reported in the literature. The comparison results confirm the efficacy and superiority of the proposed method in optimizing both single and multi objective problems.

  • The fifth generation(5G) of wireless networks will connect not only smart phone but also unimaginable things. Therefore, 5G cellular network is facing the soaring traffic demand of numerous user devices. To solve this problem, a huge amount of 5G base stations will need to be installed. The base station positioning problem is an NP-hard problem that does not know how long it will take to solve the problem. Because, it can not find an answer other than to check the number of all cases. In this paper, to solve the NP hard problem, we compare the tabu search and the genetic algorithm using real maps for optimal cell planning. We also perform Monte Carlo simulations to study the performance of the Tabu search and Genetic algorithm for 5G cell planning. As a results, Tabu search required 2.95 times less computation time than Genetic algorithm and showed accuracy difference of 2dBm.

  • Ant algorithm is new meta heuristic for hard combinatorial optimization problem. It is a population based approach that uses exploitation of positive feedback as well as greedy search. It was first proposed for tackling the well known Traveling Salesman Problem. In this paper, we propose the improved $AS_{rank}$ algorithms. The original $AS_{rank}$ algorithm accomplishes a pheromone updating about only the paths which will be composed of the optimal path is higher, but, the paths which will be composed the optimal path is lower does not considered. In this paper, The proposed method evaporate the pheromone of the paths which will be composed of the optimal path is lowest(worst tour path), it is reducing the probability of the edges selection during next search cycle. Simulation results of proposed method show lower average search time and average iteration than original ACS.

  • This paper presents the design of optimal fuzzy classifier for human detection by using genetic algorithms, one of the best-known meta-heuristic search methods. For this purpose, encoding scheme to search the optimal sequential intersection points between adjacent fuzzy membership functions is originally presented for the fuzzy classifier design for HOG (Histograms of Oriented Gradient) descriptors. The intersection points are sequentially encoded in the proposed encoding scheme to reduce the redundancy of search space occurred in the combinational problem. Furthermore, the fitness function is modified with the true-positive and true-negative of the confusion matrix instead of the total success rate. Experimental results show that the two proposed approaches give superior performance in HOG datasets.

  • This paper aimed at modeling a fine triangular grid for network dome by using Harmony Search (HS) algorithm. For this purpose, an optimization process to find a fine regular triangular mesh on the curved surface was proposed and the analysis program was developed. An objective function was consist of areas and edge's length of each triangular and its standard deviations, and design variables were subject to the upper and lower boundary which was calculated on the nodal connectivity. Triangular network dome model, which was initially consist of randomly irregular triangular mesh, was selected for the target example and the numerical result was analyzed in accordance with the HS parameters. From the analysis results of adopted model, the fitness function has been converged and the optimized triangular grid could be obtained from the initially distorted network dome example.

  • Cloud computing, also known as "country as you go", is used to turn any computer into a dematerialized architecture in which users can access different services. In addition to the daily evolution of stakeholders' number and beneficiaries, the imbalance between the virtual machines of data centers in a cloud environment impacts the performance as it decreases the hardware resources and the software's profitability. Our axis of research is the load balancing between a data center's virtual machines. It is used for reducing the degree of load imbalance between those machines in order to solve the problems caused by this technological evolution and ensure a greater quality of service. Our article focuses on two main phases: the pre-classification of tasks, according to the requested resources; and the classification of tasks into levels ('odd levels' or 'even levels') in ascending order based on the meta-heuristic "Bat-algorithm". The task allocation is based on levels provided by the bat-algorithm and through our mathematical functions, and we will divide our system into a number of virtual machines with nearly equal performance. Otherwise, we suggest different classes of virtual machines, but the condition is that each class should contain machines with similar characteristics compared to the existing binary search scheme.

  • The unit commitment problem in a power system involves determining the start-up and shut-down schedules of many dynamos for a day or a week while satisfying the power demands and diverse constraints of the individual units in the system. It is very difficult to derive an economically optimal schedule due to its huge search space when the number of dynamos involved is large. Tabu search is a popular solution method used for various optimization problems because it is equipped with effective means of searching beyond local optima and also it can naturally incorporate and exploit domain knowledge specific to the target problem. When given a large-scaled problem with a number of complicated constraints, however, tabu search cannot easily find a good solution within a reasonable time. This paper shows that a large- scaled optimization problem such as the unit commitment problem can be solved efficiently by using a parallel tabu search. The parallel tabu search not only reduces the search time significantly but also finds a solution of better quality.

  • Harmony search algorithm (HSA), developed by Hydrosystem lab. in Korea University in 2001, was a new meta-heuristic optimization algorithm inspired by the iterative improvision process of Jazz music players where the best harmony is eventually produced. HSA is now one of the most well-known meta-heuristic algorithms (as proven by its cited number of the first published paper more than 3,600 times as of January 11th 2018 based on Google Scholar citation) and has been applied to diverse research domains such as not only water resources and civil engineering but also in medical science, business, and humanities. This paper is a review article written with the wish for wider application of HSA and other optimization algorithms, especially in the domain of water resources engineering. Therefore, this paper first briefly introduces the mechanism and operators of HSA and then reviews its application area and citation frequency per research domain. In addition, recent globalization of HSA will be investigated and summarized by checking the current status of related international conferences and on-going research projects. After reviewing previous domestic papers with optimization algorithms specifically published in the water resources domain, this paper is finalized by delivering some suggestions to encourage the application of optimization algorithms including HSA.

  • This paper proposes a Tabu search algorithm to minimize the required energy to send data between a source and a destination using the cooperative communication in wireless ad hoc networks. As the number of nodes in wireless ad hoc networks increases, the amount of calculation for establishing the path between nodes would be too much increased. To obtain the optimal cooperative path within a reasonable computation time, we propose a new Tabu search algorithm for a high-density wireless network. In order to make a search more efficient, we propose some efficient neighborhoods generating operations of the Tabu search algorithm. We evaluate those performances through some experiments in terms of the minimum energy required to send data between a source and a destination as well as the execution time of the proposed algorithm. The comparison results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other existing algorithms.

  • All sensor nodes generally determine their positions using anchor nodes that are located in underwater sensor networks. This paper proposes a Tabu search algorithm to determine the minimum number of anchor nodes for the location of all sensor nodes in underwater sensor networks. As the number of the sensor nodes increases in the network, the amount of calculation that determines the number of anchor nodes would be too much increased. In this paper, we propose a Tabu search algorithm that determines the minimum number of anchor nodes within a reasonable computation time in a high dense network, and propose an efficient neighborhood generating operation of the Tabu search algorithm for efficient search. The proposed algorithm evaluates those performances through some experiments in terms of the minimum number of anchor nodes and execution time. The proposed algorithm shows 5-10% better performance than the conventional algorithm.
