  • Cyclohexanone is important intermediate for the manufacture of caprolactam which is monomer of nylron. Cyclohexanone is generally produced by dehydrogenation reaction of cyclohexanol. In this study, highly mesoporous metal oxides such as meso-$WO_3$, meso-$TiO_2$, meso-$Fe_2O_3$, meso-CuO, meso-$SnO_2$ and meso-NiO were synthesized using mesoporous silica KIT-6 as a hard template via nano-replication method for dehydrogenation of cyclohexanol. The overall conversion of cyclohexanol followed a general order: meso-$WO_3$ >> meso-$Fe_2O_3$ > meso-$SnO_2$ > meso-$TiO_2$ > meso-NiO > meso-CuO. In particular, meso-$WO_3$ significantly showed higher activity than the other mesoporous metal oxides. Therefore, the meso-$WO_3$ has wide range of application possibilities for dehydrogenation of cyclohexanol.

  • One flask synthesis of dithienylmethane and difurylmethane is reported. The reaction of aldehydes with excess furan or thiophene affords the meso-phenyldithienylmethane (DTM) and meso-phenyldifurylmethane (DFM), respectively. The reaction is catalyzed with trifluoroacetic acid or with BF3·O(Et)2. An acyl group is selectively introduced in 1 and 9 position of difurylmethane and dithienylmethane by use of an acid chloride and tin (IV) chloride. The reduction of resulting 1,9-bisacyldifurylmethane or 1,9-bisacyldithienylmethane affords the corresponding 1,9-bis-diol. An acid catalyzed condensation of diol with meso-phenyldipyrromethane followed by oxidation with DDQ gives the porphyrins. The reaction resulted meso-5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21,22-dithiaporphyrin (SSNN) or 15-mesityl-5,10,20-triphenyl-21,22-dioxaporphyrin (OONN), respectively. The formation of small amount of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPPH2) is also observed. The formation of TPP indicates that meso-phenyldipyrromethane is reversibly cleaved and form pyrrole and pyrrylbenzylcarbocation during the condensation. The proton nmr and electronic spectrum of the SSNN and OONN porphyrins are somewhat different from the previously synthesized meso-5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21,23-dithiaporphyrin (SNSN) or meso-5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21,23-dioxaporphyrin (ONON).

  • Mesoporous tin oxide (meso-$SnO_2$) with 5 nm mesopore and well-aligned $SnO_2$ nanowire-bundles with 5~7 nm diameters were prepared by template synthesis method. In addition to meso-$SnO_2$, meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$, which has almost the same structure as meso-$SnO_2$ including $SiO_2$ used as the template were prepared by the modification of template synthesis. X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, transmission electron microscopy observed structures of meso-$SnO_2$ and meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$. Although the meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$ showed some positive evidences to suppress the volume change of meso-$SnO_2$ through cyclic voltammogram, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and voltage profiles during cycling, its cycle life was not improved highly to address modified structural effects. Thus, further study might be done to control the nanostructure of meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$ for enhanced cycle performance.

  • This paper presents a new approach with meso scale structure models to express mechanical property, such as stress - strain relationships, of concrete. This approach is successful to represent both uniaxial tension and uniaxial compression stress - strain relationship, which is in macro scale. The meso scale approach is also applied to predict degraded mechanical properties of frost-damaged concrete. The degradation of mechanical properties with frost-damaged concrete was carefully observed. Strength and stiffness in both tension and compression decrease with freezing and thawing cycles (FTC), while stress-free crack opening in tension softening increases. First attempt shows that the numerical simulation can express the experimentally observed degradation by introducing changes in the meso scale structure in concrete, which are assumed based on observed damages in the concrete subjected to FTC. At the end applicability of the meso scale approach to prediction of the degradation by combined effects of salt attack and FTC is discussed. It is shown that clarification of effects of frost damage in concrete on corrosion progress and on crack development in the damaged cover concrete due to corrosion is one of the issues for which the meso scale approach is useful.

  • meso-Functionalized dipyrromethanes 6-10 were synthesized by acid-catalyzed addition of pyrrole to ${\alpha}$-position of 2-alkenyl pyrroles. The regiochemistry of the reaction can be explained by either the formation of more stable carbocation intermediate or ${\beta}$-addition of ${\alpha},{\beta}$-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. The starting 2-alkenyl pyrroles were synthesized by Aldol condensation of 2-formylpyrrole with active methylene compounds such as nitromethane, diethylmalonate and malononitrile. Attempted ‘2+2' condensation of meso-diethylmalonyldipyrromethane, meso-(p-tolyl)dipyrromethane and p-tolualdehyde afforded three different porphyrins 12, 13 and 14 in reasonable yields. On the other hand, meso-(nitromethyl)dipyrromethane with p-(tbutyl) benzaldehyde resulted in the formation of three different porphyrins such as 5,15-dicyano-10,20-diarylporphyrin (16), 5-cyano-15-formyl-10,20-diarylporphyrin (17) and 5,15-diformyl-10,20-diarylporphyrin (18) in low yields. Conversion of nitromethyl groups to nitrile and (or) formyl group was observed under the porphyrin forming conditions.

  • Meso-scale or micro-scale forming of sheet metal parts has been recently considered as one of the important forming technologies with growing demand on meso/micro products for electric or medical devices. Experimental investigation on the cylindrical meso-cup drawing with hemispherical punch is carried out to examine the limit drawing ratio and thickness distribution of drawn cups. The working parameters chosen in this study are blank diameter, die-corner radius and blankholding force. It is found from the experiments that the limit drawing ratio of 2.4 can be achieved in the case of hemispherical cup drawing and uniform thickness distribution in wider region can be obtained compared with the results of conventional cup drawing.

  • The present parametric study deals with the meso-scale modelling of concrete subjected to cyclic compression, which exhibits hysteresis loops during unloading and reloading. Concrete is idealised as a two-dimensional three-phase composite made of aggregates, mortar and interfacial transition zones (ITZs). The meso-scale modelling approach relies on the hypothesis that the hysteresis loops are caused by localised permanent displacements, which result in nonlinear fracture processes during unloading and reloading. A parametric study is carried out to investigate how aggregate density and size, amount of permanent displacements in the ITZ and the mortar, and the ITZ strength influence the hysteresis loops obtained with the meso-scale modelling approach.

  • A simple, rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric method is herewith proposed for the determination of copper(II) by using diamine-dioxime ligand, meso-3,6,6,9-tetramethyl-4,8-diazaundecane-2,10-dione dioxime or meso-HexaMethyl Propylene Amine Oxime (meso-HMPAO). This method is based on the formation of a stable 1 : 1 red-pink complex between copper(II) and meso-HMPAO in aqueous solution. Absorption measurements were carried at 497 nm, with a molar absorptivity value of 338 L $mol^{-1}\;cm^{-1}$. Beer's law was obeyed over the concentration range of 0.5-370 ${\mu}$g $mL^{-1}$ with a Sandell's sensitivity value of 0.18 ${\mu}$g $cm^{-2}$. The proposed method has been successfully applied for determination of copper(II) in foodstuffs and pharmaceutical samples. The results obtained from this method are comparable with those obtained AAS.
