Objectives : The acupuncture about acupoint affects the production of NO, NOS, and NE.Local action of acupuncture is important for acupuncture treatment. To prove this, the revelation degree of NO, NOS, and NE was observed by stimulating the acupuncture at the connecting point of SP4, KI4, and LR5 in the depths of Superficial layer, Middle layer and Deep layer. Methods : Needles were inserted into rats, on each right and left sides of the connecting point, SP4, KI4 and LR5 acupoints which are the stream points of the foot meridian. After insertion, needles were retained for three minutes. After the retention, rat was sacrificed via cardiac puncture, and tissues of each SP4, KI4 and LR5 point near meridian vessel was extracted to examine the changes in the expression of NO, NOS and NE. Results : In terms of the effect in NO production, there was significant increase in the Superficial layer, Middle layer and Deep layer at KI4. In terms of the effect in NE production, there was significant decrease in the Superficial layer at SP4 and increase in the Superficial layer, Middle layer and Deep layer at LR5. In terms of the effect in nNOS production, there was significant increase in the Superficial layer, Middle layer and Deep layer at SP4 also in the Superficial layer at KI4. In terms of the effect in eNOS production, there was a significant increase in the Superficial layer, Middle layer and Deep layer at SP4, KI4 and LR5. In terms of the effect in iNOS production, there was significant increase in the Superficial layer, Middle layer and Deep layer at SP4, KI4 and LR5. Conclusions : The effect of acupuncture applied at the connecting point of six meridians of the foot on the activities of NO, NOS and NE could be observed, and it can be induced from the effect of needle stimulation on disrupted local and systemic nervous responses.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to identify changes of texts by investigating similarities and differences of the third chapter of limb diseases section between Beijiqianjinyaofang(BJQJYF) and Sunzhenrenqianjinfang(SZRQJF). Methods : I reviewed the third chapter of limb diseases section both of BJQJYF and SZRQJF and analysed the changes of texts. Results : 1. Hand, shoulder and low back pains mentioned in the second chapter of glossopathy from SZRQJF were moved to the third chapter of limb diseases in BJQJYF. 2. Inappropriate indications were changed reasonably. 3. Contents related with treatment were revised, by addition or deletion of contents. 4. There were some contents which were worth clinically in SZRQJF. 5. The rule of choosing acupoints for hand, arm, leg, knee and limb disease was selection of local points, and for shoulder and low back disease was selection of distant points. Conclusions : Classification and contents of the third chapter of limb diseases were re-organized systematically through proofreading by medical printing authority. However, some contents deleted from SZRQJF were worth clinically, and more studies are necessary to identify the reason why the indication and selection of acupoints were changed by proofreading.
The purpose of this study is to introduce the music therapy as one of the 17 kinds of oriental medicine music therapy and investigate the record in the literature. The spleen is an organ that has the function of digestion, absorption, and supply of nutrition. Damp, anxiety, and improper diet can cause deficiency syndrome of the spleen. The symptoms of deficiency of the spleen are poor appetite, abdominal distension, borborygmus, water-grain dysentery, dyspepsia, and lack of strength in limbs. CV12, CV6, S36, B20, B21, and Sp4 are can be used as acupuncture points that are a great help to the patients who suffer from deficiency of the spleen. This study describes the theory of invigorating the spleen music therapy that has a good possibility as a new method of oriental medical treatment and present the acupuncture points that can be used with invigorating the spleen music therapy. The tone of the spleen is Gung(宮) and the sound of the spleen is related to a song. The music therapy of invigorating the spleen includes beating Earth-Gi(地氣) rhythm with Cheonnyeonmanse, stimulating Spleen Meridian and Stomach Meridian with Gayaguem sanjo jungjungmori, and acupuncture with "Le Cygne" of Camille Saint-Saens.
Objectives : The conventional direct and indirect moxibustion therapies for prostate treatment could not been applied to the acupuncture point of $CV_1$(Conception Vessel Meridian 1, 會陰) because of its boring body region. The position of $CV_1$(會陰) is the back side of hard part between the anus and the genital organ. The conventional moxibustion methods have many troubles in operating to the acupuncture point of $CV_1$(會陰). In order to get rid of these problems, we have suggested the special heat generating terminal especially for prostate. The features of the special heat generating terminal for prostate are the low temperature infrared heater and the adhesive moxa-pad. These features are no burnt, no fiery and especially suitable for the point of $CV_1$(會陰). Methods: The heat generating terminal which is a part of the moxa-extract moxibustion cauterizer is composed of a PTC(Positive Temperature Coefficients) ceramic heater and the adhesive moxa-pad We had got the experimental demonstrations by the stimulating the acupuncture points which are $CV_1$(會陰), $BL_{28}$(Bladder Meridian 28, 膀胱兪), and $CV_3$(Conception Vessel Meridian 3, 中極) with the special heat generating terminal for the prostatitis and the benign prosthetic hypertrophy. And the stimulation level was 43$^{\circ}C$ infrared heat for one hour. The type of thermography is IRIS-5000. Results : With one subject suffering the prostatitis and another subject suffering the benign prosthetic hypertrophy, we cauterized the acupuncture points $CV_1$(會陰), $BL_{28}$(膀胱兪) and $CV_3$(中極) with the special heat generating terminal for prostate. We measured the temperature variations by the thermography before and after stimulations. Finally we estimated the tendency of temperature decreasing in the region of post-stroke urinary symptoms and the improvement of nocturnal enuresis after the stimulations. Conclusions : We suggest that the special heat generating terminal of moxa-extract moxibustion cauterizer proposed herein is effective for the treatment of prostate by NIH-CPSI and IPSS.
Objectives : Human physiological changes in the state of qigong has been measured using EEG(Electroencephalography), functional MRI(functional Magnetic Resonance Image), EAV(Electro-Acupuncture according to Voll) and SQUID(Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) measurements. Methods & Results : EEGs were measured to study the differences between Qigong masters and Qi receiver on the changes of EEG. During Qigong, an alpha waves were increased. The power spectra indicate that the peak frequency of alpha waves increased during Qigong. Qi receiver's EEG signals seemed to affected by the state of himself. Brain activation did not observed when qigong master concentrates the Qi at Laogong(P8). But a localization of fMRI signal in the sensory cortex was observed by electric acupuncture stimulation at Laogong(P8). Five phase deviation of EAV were clearly changed in the both cases of Qigong master and Qi receiver. When a Qigong master concentrates the Qi at Yintang, Laogong(P8), Qihai(CV6) meridian points during Qigong state, the change of magnetic field around acupoints Yintang, Laogong points has been measured using 40-Channel DROS-SQUID apparatus. After smoothing process of the continuously measured magnetic signal around acupoints for a few minutes, we could observe that a series of peaks, magnitude of -1.0~2.5pT appeared. But there was no significant difference in changes of magnetic signal around acupoints. Physical signals of magnetocardiogram has been measured by using 2-Channel DROS SQUID(Magnetocardiogram). Physical signals of magnetocardiogram were clealy changed at the ST segments after S-wave when qigong master concentrates the Qi.
Chiropractic is very similar to Oriental Medicine in philosophy on the cause of diseases and in utilization of spinal articulations for diagnosis and treatment. In this paper the spinal area used to treat liver dysfunction in S.O.T. technique, one of chiropractic techniques, was compared to the acupncture points used to cure the same conditions. Because both Oriental medicine and Chiropractic are dealing with autonomic nervous system in regulating abnormal conditions, also the innervation of spinal nerves to those areas was checked. The spinal area that S.O.T. technique utilizes to correct liver dysfunction is transverse processes of T8, which corresponds to B16. Acupncture points from this level down to T12/L1, which are B16, B17, B18, B19, B20, B21, B45, B46, B47, B48, B49, B50, GV6, GV7, GV8 and GV9, all have been applied to control liver function. Apparent discrepency exists in therapeutic areas for liver malfunction between the two natural healing arts. According to the neurology texts, liver is innervated by sympathetic fibers from the 7th-10th thoracic segments and by parasympathetic fibers from vagus nerve. Sympathetic afferent nerves from the liver reach the 7th-12th thoracic spinal cord segments. It can be said all the 7th-12th thoracic spinal cord segments are related to liver function. Therefore the areas used for liver dysfunction in both natural medicine are appropriately selected. However, B16, the Oriental medical equivalent of the main spinal area which is used for lowered liver function in C.M.R.T. Technique, is not utilized as frequent as in Oriental medicine.
Objective : This study was undertaken to determine if Juglandis Semen herbal acupuncture(Ja) has a protective effect against glycerol-induced acute renal failure in rats. Methods : Rats were dehydrated for 24hr and then injected with 5 ml/kg of 50 % glycerol, one-half of dose in each hindlimb muscle. In experiments for Ja effect, rats received 0.1 ml of Ja extraction in both sides of corresponding $Sh\grave{e}nsh\bar{u}(BL_{23})$ of human body and non-acupuncture points(the root of tail) for 3 days after injection of glycerol. The experimental group were divided into the Normal group, the Control group, the Ja to $Sh\grave{e}nsh\bar{u}(BL_{23})$ group(Ja-AS), the Ja to non-acupuncture points group(Ja-AN). Results : There were significant decrease of urine volume, BUN, fractional glucose excretion, fractional phosphate excretion, total protein level in Ja-AS as compared with the control group. Conclusion : This suggests that Ja-AS could be used in prevention and treatment of acute renal failure. However, the precise mechanisms of Ja protection remain to be determined.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to establish literatural evidence about thermotherapy and cryotherapy for Korean medicine through literatural review. Methods : Applicable paragraphs which were related to the thermotherapy and cryotherapy of cutaneous and muscle meridian were phrased from in "Yibujicheng(醫部集成) and "Dongyibaojian(東醫寶鑑)" where were archiving of Oriental or Korean medicine literatures. Searched paragraphs were analysed for establishing historical and theoretical bases of thermotherapy and cryotherapy in Korean medicine. Results : Thermotherapy of cutaneous and muscle meridian(經皮經筋溫熱療法) such as hot pack, warm water therapy, paraffin bath, ultrasound is originated from yu(慰) warm water(溫水) hot water(熱水). Matching indications are various pain conditions(caused by coldness(寒), hard-work(僗若), extravasated blood(瘀血), inflammatory skin disease, frostbite and several internal diseases. It also treats gynecological diseases and facial palsy. Diathermic therapy on acupuncture points(穴位照射溫熱療法) such as infra-red, microwave, shortwave is originated from huolu(火爐), wenlu(溫爐), xianglu(香爐), lamp light(燈火). Its objective is to improve the effects of herb medicine by aiding sweating or to treat the residual symptoms of fever disease or to care skin disease and pain from bone fracture, contusion. Cryotherapy of cutaneous and muscle meridian(經皮經筋溫寒冷療法) such as ice pack, ice spray, iced whirpool, cool water bath is originated from lengfu(冷敷), lengtie(冷貼), lengshiyu(冷石熨). Matching indications are contusions, animal bite injury, corn(肉刺) and (淋病), eye disease, nasal bleeding, hemorrhoid, inflammatory skin disease and chicken pox. Conclusions : Thermotherapy and cryotherapy of cutaneous and muscle meridian(經皮經筋溫冷療法) are the treatments which were used in Korean medicine from the ancient Korean medicine. As scientific equipments were originated from yu(慰), huolu(火爐), wenlu(溫爐), xianglu(香爐), lamp light(燈火). lengfu(冷敷), lengtie(冷貼), lengshiyu(冷石熨). It can be said that these are elements of Korean medicine. More rigorous studies are needed to establish clinical evidence about not only thermotherapy and cryotherapy but also the other physiotherapy of Korean medicine.
Objective : By establishing the Five Viscera Source Point Acupuncture as the targeted acupuncture treatment for stadardization, as the first step, this study was conducted to sort the indications of each acupuncture remedies, which can be referred as one of the most important factors in acupuncture treatment, based on Yeoungchu. Method : This study selected only the contents related to indications of five viscera, by extracting the relevant sentences from Yeoungchu using the search words Liver(Liver Meridian, First Yin), Heart(Pericardium, Heart Meridian, Second Yin), Spleen(Spleen meridian, Third Yin), Lung(Lung Meridian, Third Yin), and Kidney(Kidney Meridian, Second Yin). Result & Conclusion : 1. We selected and extracted text related to liver disease from Chapter 16, heart (pericardium) disease from Chapter 16, spleen disease from Chapter 19, lung disease from Chapter 17, and finally kidney disease from Chapter 17 of Yeoungchu. 2. The basic theory of applying Five Viscera Source Point Acupuncture to five viscera diseases is first assorting the diseases according to its state (i.e. deficiency or excess), then draining the source point of the appropriate viscus in case of excess, or supplementing the source point of the appropriate viscus in case of deficiency. 3. For the correct application of Five Viscera Source Point Acupuncture, the classification of the disease, not only the judgement on its state, must be presented systematically and synthetically in combination with Four Examinations. Therefore the follow-up studies needs to be conducted.
Subject : After acupuncture at So-Chung(HT9) in humans(n=4) we intend to know the differents of acupuncture at acupuncture and non-acupuncture on the electrical frequency change and signal transmission along the meridian with different acupuncture manipulation method. Met6ods : The etectrical signal on the heart merdian acupuncture point, So-Bu(HT8), Shin-Moon(HT7) and So-Hae(HT3), and control non acupuncture points was measured by electrodes biopack instrument. Acupuncture needles(diameter: 0.25mm, length:30mm) were used for acupuncture. The frequency was recorded before, during and after needling the So-chung. Results : After acupuncture the components between 2 and 5Hz frequency level were decreased comparing with that of pre-acupuncture state. Time-delayed correlation coefficient was increased every 10 seconds. It imply that the signal may be transferred. These effects did not appear at non acupuncture point and also did not arise when there was no ki(氣) feeling. These results suggest that acupuncture stimulation is similar to 2~5Hz frequency electric acupuncture. and ki feeling and manipulation which can induce ki feeling is very important in acupuncture clinic.
