Objectives This is the review on the Jeolgyeong which means diagnosis method of meridian and acupoints. Detecting method of meridian and acupoints under the disease condition using fingertips were more developed in Japan than in China and Korea. This study is the introduction to the Japanese style palpation method on meridian and acupoints. Methods Firstly the textbook 'Acupuncture medicine' published by the committee of Korean professors' association of acupuncture and moxibustion was analyzed. Especially the contents of the palpation method on meridian and acupoints were focused and summarized and secondly the book describing the palpation method on meridian and acupoints was selected, translated and summarized. Results Until now the knowledge on the acupoints reaction depending on the patient's status, the deficiency pattern and the excessive pattern was rarely described in China and Korea. On the contrary, 4 kinds of reactions in the deficiency pattern and 4 kinds of reactions in the excessive pattern were well described in Japanese literatures. Mild touching, mild pinching, rubbing, mild pressing and severe pressing were also described along the meridians. Except the bladder meridian Back Shu points, Yuan points, Luo points, Xi(cleft) points, Front Mu points were depicted as the same as those in China and Korea. For the bladder meridian lines, 4 lines were organized including 2 lines of Hua-Tuo-Jia-Ji-Xue and the middle line between 1st and 2nd bladder meridian line as well as 1st bladder meridian line and 2nd bladder meridian line. Conclusions Detecting meridians or acupoints and using them for diagnosis and treatment is a method used in China, Korea, and Japan. However, detailed descriptions of the method for detecting meridians through palpation are revealed in Japanese books. Palpation methods for diagnosing meridians using touching, pinching, rubbing, and pressing methods are expected to be standardized and systematically learned in Korea.
Objectives : The characteristic of meridian system has been similar to this of electric potentials in human body. Therefore to measure the electric potentials in healthy volunteers and patients, and to find out the characteristic of meridian system and also to do that of differences between them. Methods : Twenty-nine healthy volunteers, thirty patients diagnosed as a cerebral infarction and wind-syndrome caused by hyperactivity of the liver-yang(肝陽化風) were examined into electric potential of well(井穴) and sea(合穴) points in branches of the twelve meridians by physiograph. Results : Measurements were analyzed by factor analysis, then we obtained that both the right and the left electric potential of well and sea points in branches of the twelves meridians in healthy volunteers were divided into two factors, hand meridian and foot meridian. Where as the left electric potential of those in patients with cerebral infarction were divided into three factors, one is foot meridian, another is hand meridian with the exception of large intestine meridian, and the other is large intestine meridian and also the right electric potential were divided into three factors, foot meridian, hand meridian with the exception of large intestine and lung meridian, and large intestine and lung meridian. Conclusions : In the results, healthy volunteers differ from patients in characteristic of electrical potentials, which means that we are able to catch the characteristic of meridian system by electrical potentials of well and sea points.
A comparative study of influence by area between acupuncture points on hand of original acupuncture system with those of hand acupuncture system was resulted as followes 1. The influence of acupuncture points on original acupuncture system was different from those on hand acupuncture system by meridian system even though on same area or point but was similar by meridian coordination even though on different area or point. 2. The influence of acupuncture points on hand acupuncture system was almost added by those of coordinated original acupuncture system point on those of hand acupuncture system point. 3. The influence of non coordinated hand acupuncture points with several original acupuncture points was according to those of up or down point on same meridian. 4. Tung;s acupuncture system had no corelationship with other two acupuncture systems, where it has no holistic system on original princeple and Extra-points had also no corelationship, where it has no meridian system.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of laser acupuncture to the 830 nm on the five transport points with the spleen meridian for treatment to intestinal disease in rat with dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)-induced colitis. Methods : Colitis was induced by DSS for 20 days. The laser therapy on the five transport points of spleen meridian (Laser Well Point-SP1(L-WE), Laser Brook Point-SP2(L-BR), Laser Stream Point-SP3(L-ST), Laser River Point-SP5(L-RI) and Laser Sea Point-SP9(L-SE) was practiced twice a week for 5 times. Colon length was measured using a measuring point. Histological evaluation of colitis was conducted by hematoxylin and eosin(H&E) staining. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) was determined using western blotting and quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Results: Colon length increased significantly L-BR and L-ST points after 5 times of therapy. Damage to the colonic mucosa is an integral feature of the DSS model, so control colonic mucosa tissue was damaged in the areas of ulceration resulting in complete epithelial loss. However histological damage decreased on the epithelial lining at all points. Cyclooxygenase(COX)-2 concentrations decreased in all points groups and Interferon(IFN)-${\gamma}$ increased in L-WE, L-BR, L-RI and L-SE points but L-ST was decreased when compared with control. White blood cell(WBC) and neutrophils(NE) decreased after the fifth acupuncture on the all points. But hemoglobin(HGB) increased after the fifth acupuncture on the L-WE, L-BR, L-ST and L-RI points. Also Mean corpuscular hemoglobin(MCH) and Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration(MCHC) decreased after the fifth acupuncture on the all points. Conclusions: The present study indicated that five transport points of the spleen meridian can prevent the development of DSS-induced colitis in rat. Thereby suggesting that should be available for decreasing DSS-induced inflammation in a colonic mucosa of tissue.
Objectives : Five transport points are often used in acupuncture treatment. However, there is no clear explanation about the reason why the five transport points are matched five phases in this manner. Therefore, we reviewed the literatures and theses about the principal of matching and researched a new way to understand the reason. Methods : We found 8 theses and 3 literatures related to the matching of five transport points to five phases by searching the web sites. And, we reviewed the principal of matching and researched another new way to understand the reason why they are matched so. Results and Conclusions : In the viewpoint of the natural state and function of five phases, the start points arising in yin- and yang-meridian are matched to wood and metal respectively. Therefore, well point matches the wood and metal in yin- and yang-meridian respectively. And by following the flow of five transport points, the other points match with fire, earth, metal, water in yin-meridian and water, wood, fire, and earth in yang-meridian.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to show the rationale of point-selection on the methods of acupuncture and moxibustion in the Qi section(in the Naegyeong chapter) of the Donguibogam. Methods : First, We summarized the cause of each disease in the Qi section(in the Naegyeong chapter) of the Donguibogam. Then, We explained the rationale of acupuncture point-selection referring to the cause of disease, physiology of the Oriental medicine, other uses of each acupuncture points in the Donguibogam, character of each acupuncture points, flow of meridian pathways and specific acupuncture points etc. Results and Conclusions : Total 37 acupuncture points were used in the Qi section(in the Naegyeong chapter) of the Donguibogam. Most of acupuncture points were specific acupuncture points. but, some rationale of acupuncture point-selection were explained by the cause of disease, physiology of the Oriental medicine, other uses of each acupuncture points in the Donguibogam, flow of meridian pathways etc.
