비대칭 활성화 확산 이론을 이용한 휴대폰 메뉴 구조 디자인 (Menu Structure Design using Asymmetric Spreading Activation in Mobile Phone)

  • As products are getting more diverse and new products are entering the market faster, customers have trouble learning how to use them. User-oriented menu structures may solve this problem. In order to design user-oriented menu structures, spreading activation theory has been studied. The spreading activation test shows that the strong associative relationship between words has shorter response times. Based on the spreading activation test, asymmetric spreading activation was introduced and a hypothesis that in a well-designed menu structure, association between upper-low menu pairs is not affected by an activation direction was tested for this study. In this study the menu of a cellular phone (Model: SPH-w2900) was extracted, and underwent 1st spreading activation tests. Then, on each menu pair, response time differences (asymmetric transition) by accuracy and directions were analyzed to find out problems in labels and improve menu structures and vocabulary. Second spreading activation tests were conducted to check whether asymmetric transitions decreased. The results showed that response time differences (asymmetric transition) for activation directions were found to be dropped significantly. Asymmetric transitions in spreading activation presented in this study will be helpful to define user-oriented menu structures.

에러 분석을 통한 사용자 중심의 메뉴 기반 인터페이스 설계 (Design of Menu Driven Interface using Error Analysis)

  • As menu structure of household appliance is complicated, user's cognitive workload frequently occurs errors. In existing studies, errors didn't present that interpretation for cognitive factors and alternatives, but are only considered as statistical frequency. Therefore, error classification and analysis in tasks is inevitable in usability evaluation. This study classified human error throughout information process model and navigation behavior. Human error is defined as incorrect decision and behavior reducing performance. And navigation is defined as unrelated behavior with target item searching. We searched and analyzed human errors and its causes as a case study, using mobile phone which could control appliances in near future. In this study, semantic problems in menu structure were elicited by SAT. Scenarios were constructed by those. Error analysis tests were performed twice to search and analyze errors. In 1st prototype test, we searched errors occurred in process of each scenario. Menu structure was revised to be based on results of error analysis. Henceforth, 2nd Prototype test was performed to compare with 1st. Error analysis method could detect not only mistakes, problems occurred by semantic structure, but also slips by physical structure. These results can be applied to analyze cognitive causes of human errors and to solve their problems in menu structure of electronic products.

  • A lot of design guidelines have been proposed for menu-drive interfaces, but they are applicable only to the menus on ordinary CRT displays. Many hardware products, however, cannot employ large displays because of the cost and space limitations. Instead, a single-line display menu (SDM) is widely used, and the designers need useful guidelines applicable to the SDM. A focus is often placed upon the optimal menu structure, but only the standard menu structures, such as $64^{\1}, 8^{\2}, 4^{\3}, and 2^{\6}$, are tested for optimality. In many cases, however, ill defined or asymmetric structures are suggested as design alternatives. To determine the optimal menu structure, user performance should be obtained in terms of quantitative measures for each of the optional structures considered. Hence, a model is needed to provide a predicted value of user performance for a given menu structure. Although severaal models have been proposed for ordinary menus, none is available for the SDM yet. A performance model was developed in this study using the neural network approach. A The model developed in this study is capable of providing quantiative measures of human performance for any menu structures without conducting additional experiments, which will save much time and reduce the design cost.

어린이 도서관 웹사이트 컨텐츠 비교 분석 (The Comparison Analysis of Contents on the Children's Library Websites)

  • 본 연구에서는 효과적인 어린이도서관 웹사이트를 설계하기 위한 방안을 모색하기 위해 31개의 현행 국내 어린이도서관 각 웹사이트의 메뉴를 통해 컨텐츠 구성, 구조 및 레이블을 기준으로 분석하였다. 먼저 메뉴를 통해 정보내용에 따른 컨텐츠 구성요소를 15개의 항목으로 분석하였으며 컨텐츠 구조 및 레이블 분석대상을 이용자의 정보이용 판단에 일차적으로 중요한 역할을 하는 메인메뉴와 1차 서브메뉴로 한정하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 효율적인 어린이도서관 웹사이트를 설계하기 위해서는 무엇보다 우선적으로 어린이도서관의 목적과 기능에 준하여 컨텐츠를 구성하는 것이 필요한 것으로 나타났으며 또한 구성된 컨텐츠는 적절한 구조와 표준화된 레이블을 통해 제공해야 해야 할 필요성이 있는 것으로 분석되었다.

Human performance models using neural network

박물관 웹 사이트의 메뉴구조 및 콘텐츠 분석에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Analysis of Menu Structure and Contents in Museum Web Sites)

  • 본 연구는 국내 박물관 웹 사이트의 메뉴구조 및 콘텐츠 분석을 통하여 박물관 웹 사이트 메뉴구조의 발전방향을 제시한 것이다. 이를 위하여 국내 27개의 국립·공립·대학 박물관을 대상으로 메뉴구조를 콘텐츠 영역으로 구분, 정리하고 인포메이션 아키텍처의 구성요소인 조직화 시스템, 레이블링 시스템, 내비게이션 시스템의 측면에서 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과, 적절한 폭과 깊이의 계층구조, 명확하고 일관성 있는 레이블 사용, 소장품 검색 기능 제공 및 소장품 현황 업데이트, 웹 사이트 오류에 대한 즉각 수정, 웹 사이트의 지속적 관리 등을 발전 방안으로 제시하였다.

웹사이트 메뉴 Depth를 줄이는 방식간의 비교 분석 (Analysis of the Methods to Decrease the Depth of Menu in Web Site)

  • To enhance web site's usability, it has been suggested that the depth of tree structured menus should be minimized. In this research, experimental results are reported to quantitatively compare the methods currently used for reducing the depth of menus in web sites. 25 popular web sites were selected and their menu types were categorized into four types: top menu, drop-down menu, boolean menu, and table of contents. The four types of menu were then sub-categorized into 15 different types according to their sub-menu type, existence of menu colors, and the event occurring after mouse activation. Performance tests and subjective evaluation were carried out. The results showed that there were no significant differences in terms of response time among the 15 menu types, while table of contents and drop-down in which the first and second level of menus were visible induced the least number of errors. In the subjective test, the top-menu structure with colors and presentation of its sub-menu without clicking mouse were preferred.

PDA의 메뉴 제시방법에 대한 사용편의성 평가 (Usability Evaluation of PDA Menu Design)

  • PDAs(Personal Digital Assistants), one of the typical mobile devices, are examined in this study to identify the factors affecting their usability. This study focuses on the menu design of PDAs. Three factors including menu extension method, menu structure, and screen orientation were manipulated in a usability experiment. Task completion times, error rates, and degree of subjective satisfaction were measured. Guidelines for designing a PDA menu are proposed based on the experimental results.

대학 웹사이트의 정보구조 및 레이블링 시스템 분석 (The Analysis of Informational Structure and Labeling System of Academic School Websites)

  • 본 연구에서는 효율적인 정보접근 도구로서의 대학 웹사이트 설계를 위한 정보구조 및 카테고리 레이블을 마련하기 위해 현재 미국 문헌정보학과 웹사이트 17개를 메인메뉴구조, 하부 카테고리, 레이블링을 기준으로 분석하였다. 분석결과 메인메뉴구조는 현재 17개 조사대상 웹사이트에서 모두 공통으로 제공하고 있는 9개 카테고리로 구성하는 것이 바람직한 것으로 나타났으며 둘째, 그 다음 수준의 서브 카테고리는 9개의 카테고리의 내용의 의미를 고려해서 35개 카테고리로 나누는 것이 바람직한 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 카테고리 테이블로 사용되는 용어는 17개 웹사이트에서 가장 많이 사용하고 있는 용어를 사용하는 것이 바람직한 것으로 나타났다.
