There were statistically significant differences in 'service', 'benefits', 'influence', 'security' variables between purchasing frequency groups. Also when comparing groups by the gender, both men and women had 'relationship maintenance intention' in CRM. However, women had the effects from 'trust' to 'commitment', while men had not effects. • Since the Korean economic crisis in 1997, consumers are selecting goods that are more economical and more reasonably priced. Markets for wealthy people, however, have seldom been influenced by economic conditions. Consequently, 'noble marketing' is a new term that marketers should become acquainted with (Kim, 1998). The continuously expanding 'noble market' that generates high profit for marketers needs to be explored, especially the men's wear market. This study adopted a qualitative method (i.e., in-depth interview) with 16 male consumers each. These men who spent more than 3,600,000 won on apparel goods in 2000 and each man had purchased at least one item-suit, jacket, trousers, or coat-from a list of high-priced brands that were selected by the researcher. Findings imply that material or functional benefit of the high-priced apparel were not a critical determinant for choosing the brand. Rather, a socially well-established image for the brand name, especially in terms of psychological/symbolic appeal, played a more important role. This finding supported previous studies. Therefore, for high-priced men s wear, the role of promotion, including advertising or word of mouth, is critical; the image that advertisers should promote is one that characterizes the clothing, and ultimately the wearers, as dignified, legitimate, traditional, and upper class.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate between locus of control, body cathexis and four aspects of clothing behavior. Locus of control was measured by Rotter's The Internal-External Scale and body cathexis by Secord and Jourard's Body Cathexis Scale. Two aspects of clothing behavior were assessed with Lee's questionnaires dealing with status symbol and clothing satisfaction. Clothing Acceptance I was determined with questionnaires designed to measure the acceptance of color and casual wear and Clothing Acceptance II by line drawings of clothing representing formal type, informal type, and new mode type designed to measure the acceptance of business suits. The questionnaires in this study were administered to a sample of men (between 20 to more than 60 years of age) in Seoul. The data from 303 respondents were analyzed. The results were: 1) Locus of control was not related to Clothing Acceptance I(acceptance of color and casual wear), but positively related to Clothing Acceptance II(acceptance of business suit), that is, the persons having wider latitudes of acceptance in business suits were internally controlled in locus of control. 2) Locus of control was negatively related to status symbol, that is, the persons having higher concepts in status symbol were externally controlled in locus of control. 3) Body cathexis was positively related to clothing satisfaction, that is, the persons having higher satisfaction toward their clothing were more satisfied with their body.

  • This study conducted in-depth interviews with twelve men in their twenties and employed the Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET) to identify the ideal self-image and fantasy of men wearing makeup. The results are as follows. First, the ideal self-images of men wearing makeup can be divided into 7 images (well-managed, dissimilar from real identity, masculine, neat, stylish, standing out, and formal). Men who wear makeup pursued an alternative decent image that is different from their reality. They want to be manly, attractive, decorous, and eye-catching through a better looking face. Second, men who wear makeup have insecurities about their looks and personalities that creates dissatisfaction with reality and a desire for a different idealistic self. Makeup was the tool to create the other entity. Makeup facilitated a fantasy of becoming another to gain increased confidence in social relationships. However, without makeup, they showed a lack of confidence and became intimidated that made them even further dependent on makeup. Third, the process helped participants complete a consensus map that represented the emotional and reasoning structures of men wearing makeup. This study showed 7 ideal self-images of men wearing makeup with a fantasy to create a desired ideal self by wearing makeup. The study can be applied to marketing strategy for men's cosmetics and plates' designs.
