Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep has an essential role in the process of learning and memory in the hippocampus. It has been reported that linalool, a major component of Lavandula angustifolia, has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects, along with other effects. However, the effect of linalool on the cognitive impairment and behavioral alterations that are induced by REM-sleep deprivation has not yet been elucidated. Several studies have reported that REM-sleep deprivation-induced memory deficits provide a well-known model of behavioral alterations. In the present study, we examined whether linalool elicited an anti-stress effect, reversing the behavioral alterations observed following REM-sleep deprivation in mice. Furthermore, we investigated the underlying mechanism of the effect of linalool. Spatial memory and learning memory were assessed through Y maze and passive avoidance tests, respectively, and the forced swimming test was used to evaluate anti-stress activity. The mechanisms through which linalool improves memory loss and behavioral alterations in sleep-deprived mice appeared to be through an increase in the serotonin levels. Linalool significantly ameliorated the spatial and learning memory deficits, and stress activity observed in sleep-deprived animals. Moreover, linalool led to serotonin release, and cortisol level reduction. Our findings suggest that linalool has beneficial effects on the memory loss and behavioral alterations induced by REM-sleep deprivation through the regulation of serotonin levels.
Objectives : Increasing evidence supports the biological and pharmacological activities of essential oils on the central nervous system such as pain, anxiety, attention, arousal, relaxation, sedation and learning and memory. The purpose of present work is to investigate the protective effect and molecular mechanism of cypress essential oil (CEO) against scopolamine (SCO)-induced cognitive impairments in C57BL/6 mice. Methods : A series of behavior tests such as Morris water maze, passive avoidance, and fear conditioning tests were conducted to monitor learning and memory functions. Immunoblotting and RT-PCR were also performed in the hippocampal tissue to determine the underlying mechanism of CEO. Results : SCO induced cognitive impairments as assessed by decreased step-through latency in passive avoidance test, relatively low freezing time in fear conditioning test, and increased time spent to find the hidden platform in Morris water maze test. Conversely, CEO inhalation significantly reversed the SCO-induced cognitive impairments in C57BL/6 mice comparable to control levels. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms of memory enhancing effect of CEO we have examined the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus. CEO effectively elevated the protein as well as mRNA expression of BDNF via activation of cAMP response element binding protein (CREB). Conclusions : Our findings suggest that CEO inhalation effectively restored the SCO-impaired cognitive functions in C56BL/6 mice. This learning and memory enhancing effect of CEO was partly mediated by up-regulation of BDNF via activation of CREB.
Currently, with the increasing demand for combining cellular phone and PDA, various kinds of PDA-phones are being developed. A typical PDA-phone consists of a CDMA processor and a PDA processor. Generally, a UART serial communication port is used for inter-processor communication. However, the CDMA standard will need more data bandwidth over 2Mbps with the emergence of IMT-2000. The bandwidth requirement is beyond the capability of UART. In this paper, several inter-processor communication mechanisms are analyzed and especially Dual Port Memory and USB were chosen as the candidates for the new communication mechanism. A prototype PDA-phone board has been implemented for experiment. The experimental result shows that Dual Port Memory is better than USB in cost performance.
As network technology advances, a larger number of devices are connected through the Internet. Recently, cloud storage services are gaining popularity, as they are convenient to access anytime and anywhere. Among cloud storage services, object storage is the representative one due to their characteristics of low cost, high availability, and high durability. One limitation of object storage services is that they can access data on the cloud only through the HTTP-based RESTful APIs. In our work, we resolve this limitation with the in-memory file system which provides a POSIX interface to the file system users and communicates with cloud object storages with RESTful APIs. In particular, our flush mechanism is compatible with existing file systems, as it is based on the swap mechanism of the Linux kernel. Our in-memory file system backed by cloud storage reduces the performance overheads and shows a better performance than S3QL by 57% in write operations. It also shows a comparable performance to tmpfs in read operations.

It is known that memory has been frequently a target threatening the computer system's security while attacks on the system utilizing the memory's weakness are actually increasing. Accordingly, various memory protection mechanisms have been studied on OS while new attack techniques bypassing the protection systems have been developed. Especially, buffer overflow attacks have been developed as attacks of Return to Library or Return-Oriented Programing and recently, a technique bypassing the countermeasure against Return-Oriented Programming proposed. Therefore, this paper is intended to suggest a detection mechanism at binary level by analyzing the procedure and features of Jump-Oriented Programming. In addition, we have implemented the proposed detection mechanism and experimented it may efficiently detect Jump-Oriented Programming attack.
To investigate the neurobiological bases of learning and memory is one of the ambitious goals of modern neuroscience. The progress in this field of recent years has not only brought us closer to understanding the molecular mechanism underlying long-lasting changes in synaptic strength, but it has also provided further evidence that these mechanisms are required for memory formation. Since twenty years ago, several studies for the tests of the hypothesis that NMDA-dependent hippocampal long-term potentiation(LTP) underlies learning have been reported. Also, in the recent year, data from mutant mice showed that a potential role for NMDA-dependent LTP in hippocampal CA1 and spatial learning. Although the current evidence for the role of NMDA receptor in learning and memory is not still obvious, NMDA receptor seems to act as a critical switch for activation of a cascade of events that underlie synaptic plasticity.
Pavlovian fear conditioning has been extensively studied for the understanding of neurobiological basis of memory and emotion. Pavlovian fear conditioning is an associative memory which forms when conditioned stimulus (CS) is paired with unconditioned stimulus (US) once or repeatedly. This behavioral model is also important for the understanding of anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder. Here we describe the neural circuitry involved in fear conditioning and the molecular mechanisms underlying fear memory formation. During consolidation some memories fade out but other memories become stable and concrete. Emotion plays an important role in determining which memories will survive. Memory becomes unstable and editable again immediately after retrieval. It opens the possibility for us of modulating the established fear memory. It provides us with very efficient tools to improve the efficacy of cognitive-behavior therapy and other exposure-based therapy treating anxiety disorders.
This paper describes the modeling of human memory using a nerve field model which is proposed for modeling the mechanism of brain mathematically. In our model, two phases of memory, retention and recollection, are focused on. The former consists of two stages, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). The proposed model consists of three parts, the STM Layer, LTM Layer and the Intermediate Layer between them. Each of these is constructed by a nerve field. In the STM Layer, memorized information is retained dynamically in the form of the reverberating states of units within the layer, while in the LTM Layer, it is stored statically in the form of structures of the weight on the links between units. the Intermediate Layer is introduced to translate this dynamic representation in the STM Layer to the LTNI Layer, and also to extract the static information from the STM Layer. In addition to this, we consider the recollection of information stored in the LTM. Finally, the behavior of this model is demonstrated by computer simulation.
Databases can crash due to various failures in computer systems. Recovery is a mechanism for restoring consistent data from damages caused by the by the failures and is an essential feature in database systems. This paper surveys recovery techniques for memory resident database systems. We first describe the basic architecture for memory resident database systems, and point out the main factors affecting their performance enhancement. Next, we explain the write-ahead logging(WAL), a recovery technique widely-used in most disk resident database systems, for easy understanding of basic recovery mechanisms. And then, we discuss some new concepts employed in memory resident database systems recovery. Finally, we present a representative memory resident database recovery technique, which is based on a special purpose hardware called HALO, as a case study.

We have developed an analog associative memory implemented with an analog array which has linear writing and erasing characteristics. The associative memory adopts a winner-take-all strategy. The operation for reading in the memory is executed with an absolute differencing circuit and a winner-take-all (WTA) circuit suitable for a nearest-match function of a content-addressable memory. We also present a system architecture that enables highly-paralleled fast writing and quick readout as well as high integration density. A multiple memory cell configuration is also presented for achieving higher integration density, quick readout, and fast writing. The system technology presented here is ideal for a real time recognition system. We simulate the function of the mechanism by menas of Hspice with $1.2{\mu}$ double poly CMOS parameters of MOSIS fabrication process.
