Efficient Multi-way Tree Search Algorithm for Huffman Decoder

  • Huffman coding which has been used in many data compression algorithms is a popular data compression technique used to reduce statistical redundancy of a signal. It has been proposed that the Huffman algorithm can decode efficiently using characteristics of the Huffman tables and patterns of the Huffman codeword. We propose a new Huffman decoding algorithm which used a multi way tree search and present an efficient hardware implementation method. This algorithm has a small logic area and memory space and is optimized for high speed decoding. The proposed Huffman decoding algorithm can be applied for many multimedia systems such as MPEG audio decoder.

CCD Pixel Correction Table Generation for MSC

  • Not all CCD pixels generate uniform value for the uniform radiance due to the different process of manufacture and each pixel characteristics. And the image data compression is essential in the real time image transmission because of the high line rate and the limited RF bandwidth. This pixel's nonuniformity and the loss compression make CCD pixel correction necessary in on-orbit condition. In the MSC system, the NUC unit, which is a part of MSC PMU, is charge of the correction for CCD each pixel. The correction is performed with the gain and the offset table for the each pixel and the each TDI mode. These correction tables are generated and programmed in the PMU Flash memory through the various image data tests at the ground test. Besides, they can be uploaded from ground station after onorbit calibration. This paper describes the principle of the table generation and the test way of the non-uniformity after NUC

Enhanced Prediction Algorithm for Near-lossless Image Compression with Low Complexity and Low Latency

  • This paper presents new prediction methods to improve compression performance of the so-called near-lossless RGB-domain image coder, which is designed to effectively decrease the memory bandwidth of a system-on-chip (SoC) for image processing. First, variable block size (VBS)-based intra prediction is employed to eliminate spatial redundancy for the green (G) component of an input image on a pixel-line basis. Second, inter-color prediction (ICP) using spectral correlation is performed to predict the R and B components from the previously reconstructed G-component image. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves coding efficiency by up to 30% compared with an existing algorithm for natural images, and improves coding efficiency with low computational cost by about 50% for computer graphics (CG) images.

웨이브렛변환 영상 부호화를 위한 다차원 큐빅 격자 구조 벡터 양자화 (Multidimensional uniform cubic lattice vector quantization for wavelet transform coding)

  • Several image coding algorithms have been developed for the telecommunication and multimedia systems with high image quality and high compression ratio. In order to achieve low entropy and distortion, the system should pay great cost of computation time and memory. In this paper, the uniform cubic lattice is chosen for Lattice Vector Quantization (LVQ) because of its generic simplicity. As a transform coding, the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is applied to the images because of its multiresolution property. The proposed algorithm is basically composed of the biorthogonal DWT and the uniform cubic LVQ. The multiresolution property of the DWT is actively used to optimize the entropy and the distortion on the basis of the distortion-rate function. The vector codebooks are also designed to be optimal at each subimage which is analyzed by the biorthogonal DWT. For compression efficiency, the vector codebook has different dimension depending on the variance of subimage. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed coding mdthod is superior to the others in terms of the computation complexity and the PSNR in the range of entropy below 0.25 bpp.

  • This paper was studied on using data of the protective relay by Power Quality Monitor. The protective relay will have problem to save data for PQM(Power Qualify Monitoring) analysis because the protective relay memory is limited. So this paper was proposed new data compression of the data was get from the protective relay. The scheme is compared each cycle after DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform). And scheme is verified through simulation of protective relay data was from real distribution system.

  • This paper presents compression algorithm of a system matrix for electromagnetic analysis by the finite element method. Generally the solution of the finite element analysis is the more accurate the more number of nodes. The memory of a computer limit to number of nodes. Therefore it is needed the technique of compress the system matrix. This algorithm is useful to handle non-zero-terms that can be generated during the application of boundary condition.

실시간 2차원 웨이블릿 영상압축기의 FPGA 구현 (FPGA Implementation of Real-time 2-D Wavelet Image Compressor)

  • 본 논문에서는 2D DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform)를 이용하여 디지털 영상압축기를 FPGA에서 실시간 동작이 가능하도록 설계하였다. 구현된 웨이블릿을 이용한 영상압축기는 필터링을 수행하는 커널부와 양자화 및 허프만 코딩을 수행하는 양자화/허프만 코더부, 외부 메모리와의 인터페이스를 위한 메모리 제어부, A/D 컨버터로부터 영상을 받아들이기 위한 입력 인터페이스부, 불규칙적인 길이의 허브만 코드값을 32비트의 일정길이로 구성하는 출력 인터페이스부, 메모리와 커널사이 데이터를 정렬하는 메모리 커널 버퍼부, PCI와의 연결을 위한 PCI 입/출력부 그리고 그 밖에 타이밍을 맞추기 위한 여러 작은 모듈들로 구성된다. 열방향 읽기 동작을 행방향 읽기 동작으로 수행하기 위한 메모리 사상방식을 사용하여 외부 메모리에 영상을 저장하고 열방향의 수직 필터링 시 효율적으로 데이터를 메모리로부터 읽을 수 있게 한다. 전체적인 동작은 A/D 컨버터의 필드 신호에 동기하여 전체 하드웨어는 필드 단위로 파이프라인 동작을 하고 필드 단위의 동작은 DWT의 웨이블릿 필터링 레벨에 따라서 동작이 구분된다. 구현된 하드웨어는 APEX2KC EP20K600CB652-7의 FPGA 디바이스에서 11119(45%)개의 LAB와 28352(9%)개의 ESB를 사용하여 하나의 FPGA내에 사상될 수 있었고 부가적인 외부 회로의 필요없이 단일 칩으로써 웨이블릿을 이용한 영상압축을 수행할 수 있었다. 또한 33MHz의 속도에서 초당 30 프레임의 영상을 압축할 수 있어 실시간 영상 압축이 가능하였다.

A Low Power Multi-Function Digital Audio SoC

  • This paper presents a system-on-chip prototype implementing a full integration for a portable digital audio system. The chip is composed of a audio processor block to implements audio decoding and voice compression or decompression software, a system control block including 8-bit MCU core and Memory Management Unit (MMU) a low power 16-bit ${\Sigma}{\Delta}$ CODEC, two DC-to-BC converter, and a flash memory controller. In order to support other audio algorithms except Mask ROM type's fixed codes, a novel 16-bit fixed-point DSP core with the program-download architecture is proposed. Funker, an efficient power management technique such as task-based clock management is implemented to reduce power consumption for portable application. The proposed chip has been fabricated with a 4 metal 0.25um CMOS technology and the chip area is about 7.1 mm ${\times}$ 7.1mm with 100mW power dissipation at 2.5V power supply.

  • Chunghwa Picture Tubes, LTD. (CPT) has developed a Novel TFT-LCD Driving Techniquel. This new technique is developed in combination with other state-of-the-art image processing solutions such as image compression / decompression, motion detection, and noise reduction. By applying the Novel Driving Technique to the high resolution TFT-LCD, it was found that the response time can be effectively reduced with a lower overall system cost by smaller frame memory requirement, lower EMI by less memory band-width. Likewise, higher display quality can also be achieved in that the unexpected noises generated by over-drive can be eliminated. The Novel TFT-LCD Driving Technique has been successfully implemented to the 30 inch WXGA (1280${\times}$768) resolution TFT LCD commercial TV module. It was found that the quality of moving picture was better improved compared with that of the conventional fast response driving method.

Spatial Selectivity Estimation Using Wavelet

  • Selectivity estimation of queries not only provides useful information to the query processing optimization but also may give users with a preview of processing results. In this paper, we investigate the problem of selectivity estimation in the context of a spatial dataset. Although several techniques have been proposed in the literature to estimate spatial query result sizes, most of those techniques still have some drawback in the case that a large amount of memory is required to retain accurate selectivity. To eliminate the drawback of estimation techniques in previous works, we propose a new method called MW Histogram. Our method is based on two techniques: (a) MinSkew partitioning algorithm that processes skewed spatial datasets efficiently (b) Wavelet transformation which compression effect is proven. We evaluate our method via real datasets. With the experimental result, we prove that the MW Histogram has the ability of providing estimates with low relative error and retaining the similar estimates even if memory space is small.
