This study deals with the unsteady close-contact melting of solid blocks on a flat surface subject to convective heating. Normalizing the model equations in reference to the steady solution successfully leads them to cover constant heat flux and isothermal limits at small and large extremes of the Biot number, respectively. The resulting equations admit a compactly expressed analytical solution, which includes the previous solutions as a subset. Based on the steady solution, the characteristics of close-contact melting can be categorized into constant heat flux, transition, and isothermal regimes, the boundaries of which appear to be nearly independent of the contact force. The unsteady solutions corresponding to Biot numbers in the transition regime show intermediate behaviors between those of the two limits. With a proper approximation, the present solution procedure can cope with the case of variable fluid temperature and heat transfer coefficient. Regardless of imposed conditions, the mean normalized Nusselt number during the unsteady process asymptotically approaches to a constant value as the Biot number comes close to each limit.
Automobile Shredder Residue (ASR) is very appropriate in a gasification melting system. Gasification melting system, because of high reaction temperature over than $1,350^{\circ}C$, can reduce harmful materials. To use the gasification processes for hydrogen production, the high concentration of CO in syngas must be converted into hydrogen gas by using water gas shift reaction. In this study, the characteristics of shift reaction of the high temperature catalyst (KATALCO 71-5M) and the low temperature catalyst (KATALCO 83-3X) in the fixed - bed reactor has been determined by using simulation gas which is equal with the syngas composition of gasification melting process. The carbon monoxide composition has been decreased as the WGS reaction temperature has increased. And the occurrence quantity of the hydrogen and the carbon dioxide increased. When using the high temperature catalyst, the carbon monoxide conversion ratio ($1-CO_{out}/CO_{in}$) rose up to 95.8 from 55.6. Compared with average conversion ratio from the identical synthesis gas composition, the low temperature catalyst was better than the high temperature catalyst.
Buoyancy-assisted melting of an unconstrained ice in an isothermally heated horizontal enclosure was numerically analyzed in a range of wall temperatures encompassing the density inversion point. The problem as posed here involves two physically distinct domains each of which has its own scales and respective heat transfer mode. These two domains join at the junction where the liquid squeezed out of the film region flushes into the lower melt pool. Both of these domains have been treated separately in the literature by a patching technique which invokes several, otherwise unnecessary, assumptions. The present study eliminates successfully such a superfluous procedure by treating the film and lower melt pool regions as a single domain. As a result of this efficient solution procedure, the interaction of the water stream ejected at the junction and the natural convection in the melt pool could be clarified for different wall temperatures. Though limited by two-dimensionality, the present results conformed indirectly the earlier reported transition of the flow pattern, as the wall temperature was increased over the density inversion point. The transient evolution of the melting surface, the time rate of change in melt volume fraction, the local and temporal variation of the heat transfer coefficients are analyzed and presented.
Purpose: In this study, the marginal fitness of ceramic Co-Cr metal crown made by precision casting, milling, and selective laser melting method were compared. Methods: The ceramic Co-Cr metal crown manufactured by precision casting used the lost wax(LC specimen) method. The abutment were scanned and then made by milling(CM specimen), selective laser melting(CS specimen) method. The specimen were cut bucco-lingual and mesio-distal, and absolute marginal discrepancy and marginal gap were measured using a digital microscope. The surface roughness of the crown was also observed. Results: On the bucco-lingual axial, absolute marginal discrepancy was the LC specimen $31.72({\pm}4.58){\mu}m$, the CM specimen $78.29({\pm}3.28){\mu}m$ and the CS specimen $143.13({\pm}3.83){\mu}m$, respectively. On the bucco-lingual axial, marginal gap was the LC specimen $22.70({\pm}1.46){\mu}m$, the CM specimen $22.70({\pm}1.49){\mu}m$ and CS specimen $99.60({\pm}1.57){\mu}m$, respectively. Conclusion: For ceramic Co-Cr metal crowns, LC specimen was superior for absolute marginal discrepancy and marginal gap. The surface of metal crowns by selective laser melting were the roughest.
In this study, effect of Si content on nugget diameter in electric resistance spot welded dual-phase(DP) steel was investigated. The cold rolled DP steels with different Si content (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 wt.%) were used and thickness of those sheet was 1.2mm. With increasing Si content, nugget diameter was increased at the same welding current. This is attributed to increase of heat input result from high resistivity. Also, nugget diameter was increased with an increase in Si content for the same heat input. For this reason, the melting point of DP steel is lowered with an increase in the Si content. And solid DP steel can easily be transformed to a liquid phase because the low melting point. Finally, a prediction formula for the nugget diameter(N.D.) could be obtained in terms of heat input(Q) and melting point(M.P) as follows: N.D.(mm) = 0.11Q(J) - 0.0031 M.P.($^{\circ}C$) + 0.32.
A series of microcapsule were synthesized by using several PCM(Phase Change Material) as a core material and gelatin/arabic gum, melamine/formaldehyde as a shell material. Coacervation technique and in situ polymerization were adopted in synthesizing microcapsules. In the microencapsulation by coacervation, tetradecane and octadecane were used as core materials. In the microencapsulation by situ polymerization tetradecane, pentadecane, hexadecane, heptadecane, octadecane, and nonadecane were used as core material. The synthesized microcapsule was examined to observe the shape of the microcapsule. The particle size analysis was performed by particle size analyzer. The thermal properties(e.g. melting point, heat of melting, crystallization temperature, heat of crystallization, differences between melting point and crystallization temperature) were obtained by DSC(Differential Scanning Calorimeter). The stirring rate effect was investigated during the microencapsulation. It was found that with increasing the stirring rate much smaller microcapule was produced. However, this did not necessarily lead to formation of spherical microcapsule.
For safety and economy reasons, hazardous waste including radioactive waste is desired to be converted into stable waste forms with a maximum volume reduction. High temperature melting technology using a plasma torch system can effectively treat even the non-flammable waste as desired. By far, one of the most difficult process for melting the non-flammable waste is a tapping of melts because the melting point of a residual slag in the tapping hole is high and because the viscosity of the melt increases sharply when tapping out. In case of a stationary furnace with a slant tapping port on the side of furnace, a certain amount of melts is left in the tapping hole after tapping out. Because of this, at every end of a melting cycle, the tapping hole needs to be opened by tapping device. The developed tapping device of melts based on both a guide electrode and auxiliary electrode is adequate for the application to discharge of melts except that the consumption of the guide electrode is somewhat faster than expected. Melt is collected in the water cooled vessel.
The constrained melting inside an isothermally heated horizontal cylinder has been repeatedly investigated in many studies only for the moderate Rayleigh numbers. This study extends the range of Rayleigh numbers to systematically investigate the transition during melting processes, especially focusing on the complex multi-cellular flow pattern and thermal instability. The enthalpy-porosity formulation, with appropriate source terms to account for the phase change, is employed. For low Rayleigh numbers, initially developed single-cell base flow keeps the flow stable. For moderate Rayleigh numbers, even small disturbances in balance between thermal buoyance force and viscous force result in branched flow structure. For high Rayleight numbers, Benard type convection is found to develop within a narrow gap between thee wall and the unmelted solid. The marginal Rayleigh number and the corresponding wave number are in excellent agreement with those from linear stability theory.
Glass melting process is influenced by both control and observation factors, where control factors include quantity and mixing ratio of raw material, the amount of fuel and air in-take. Further observation factors include temperature and pressure at each step of process inside glass melting furnace. Ambient Control is an effective means to eliminate complications from excessive variation among raw materials, or external disturbance from wide fluctuation of environment around equipments. Ambient Control uses both control and observation factors mentioned above. This study suggests an effective Proactive Control System that can enable genuine 4M standardization in glass melting furnace by applying Ambient Control.
In this study, Mo metal powder was prepared by hydrogen reduction of Mo trioxides with different purity of 2N and 3N grades. We have obtained Mo metal powder with oxygen content of 1450 ppm by hydrogen reduction and subsequent heat treatment for degassing. Using the Mo metal powder, a low-oxygen Mo ingot was prepared by repetitive vacuum arc melting. The oxygen content of the obtained Mo ingot was less than 70 ppm after vacuum arc melting for 30 min. The purity of the Mo metal powder and the ingot was evaluated using glow discharge mass spectrometry. The purity of the respective Mo ingots was increased to 3N and 4N grades from the Mo powder of 2N and 3N grades after the repetitive vacuum arc melting. The low oxygen Mo ingot thus can be used as a raw material for sputtering targets.
