  • The present study discuss about numerical methods to analyze design parameters of pyrolysis-melting incineration system. Various numerical methods of different viewpoint are introduced to simulate the performance of the system. Process analysis of the overall system is the beginning procedure of basic design process. Heat and material flow of each element are connected and are influential to each other, hence, an appropriate process modeling should be executed to prevent from unacceptable process design concepts that may results in system failure. Models to simulate performance of each elementary facility generate valuable informations on design and operation parameters, and, derive the basic design concept to be optimized. A pyrolysis model derived from waste bed combustion model is introduced to simulate the mass conversion and heat transfer in the pyrolysis process. CFD(Computational fluid dynamics) is an effective method to optimize the thermal reacting flow in various reactors such as combustor and heat exchanger. Secondary air jets arrangement and the shape of the combustor could be optimized by CFD technology.

  • A plasma melting system to vitrify ny ash from MSW(Municipal Solid Waste) incinerator has been operated in SHI(Samsung Heavy Industries) since 1996. Waste feeding rate was 200kg/hr. with maximum working power of 500㎾. Because of high melting temperature of fly ash, bottom ash was used as an additive to decrease melting temperature. Data analysis for discharged slag shows volume reduction up to 30% and no leaching of heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, Cr which were an obstacle for landfill and recycle. Atmospheric pollution gas like nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and PCDD/PCDF were restrained below the regulatory limit.

  • In order to utilize cinder melting slag as a filter media to control the quality of early rainwater, its environmental stability was verified by heavy metal elution experiment and improved by pre-treatment. Possibilities of improving its function as an absorbent was considered. Absorption characteristics of melting slag before and after the pre-treatment were analyzed by heavy metal equilibrium and stationary-phase column experiments, which in turn were analyzed by comparison experiment with activated carbon. As a result of heavy metal elution experiment, every metal item existed in a much lower amount than the criteria or was not detected, implying that there is no problem recycling it. Absorption equilibrium experiment showed that the time for pre-treatment melting slag to reach the equilibrium was reduced, while the absorbed amount was greatly increased. Stationary-phase column experiment assures us that the elimination rate was not changed much by influx rate, pH and the change in packing volume rate, indicating that this melting slag can be used not only as a filter media to control the quality of early rainwater but also in many areas of water-processing.

  • The previous models for thermal behavior in the melting furnace were deterministic, composed of such a form that if the initial input conditions are determined, the results would have been come out by using the basic heat equilibrium equations. But making the experiment by trusting the analysis results, the melted slag is fortuitously set often, because temperature variation of the melted slag in the reaction process is not point function but path function. So in this study, a transient model was developed and verified by comparing with the experimental results.

  • To design and construct a moving bed stoker incinerator for incineration treatment of the domestic oil fly ash, operating condition and moving bed area of incinerator were determined by performing incinerate experiment of the oil fly ash in the muffle furnace which simulates moving bed stoker incinerator in all conditions. Incineration process of the oil fly ash could be divided into 3 stages, every stage needs the appropriate operating condition for effective incineration. The optimum content of water in the heavy oil fly ash was found to be 20 wt% to prevent the ash from flying and reduce the volume. Science combustion rate of oil fly ash depends on the oxygen content, the incinerator must have a equipment to control the oxygen content in the combustion air. The optimum temperature was $750{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ in order to prevent adhesion to the stocker and evaporation of metal compounds of low melting point. Uniform combustion reaction and acceleration of combustion rate required agitation during the combustion of oil fly ash. The incineration rate was $12.53kg/m^2hr$ and the working area of moving bed incinerator was found to be $60m^2$ to incinerate 18 tons of oil fly ash per day.

  • This research was designed to investigate the formations of hazardous air pollutants in the MSWs pyrolysis-gasification-melting process. In this survey, PCDDs/PCDFs (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofuran) were investigated in the two facilities (A and B facilities). In A facility, the PCDDs/DFs concentrations were 0.88, 2.29, 0.16 ng I-TEQ/$m^3$ respectively on the secondary incinerator, boiler and stack. In B facility, the PCDDs/PCDFs concentrations were 0.22, 0.05 ng I-TEQ/$m^3$ respectively on the pyrolysis-gasification-melting furnace and stack. The concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs increased due to resynthesis during cooling process in the both facilities. High concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs isomers were founded as 2, 3, 4, 7, 8-PeCDF, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8-HxCDF and 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8-HxCDF orderly in A facility, and 2, 3, 4, 7, 8-PeCDF, 1, 2, 3, 7, 8-PeCDD and 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8-HxCDF orderly in B facility.

  • Due to the population growth and development of industry, waste from household and industries has increased. As the advanced countries experienced these problems, they have already started research on recycling methods of waste incineration ashes. Domestic recycling rate of incineration ash became up to 80 percent as high as the level of developed countries, but the recycling was limited to fly ash for admixture in concrete. In case of bottom ash, most of bottom ash was reclaimed in the landfills. Therefore, basic physical property and mechanical experiments for bottom ash were conducted in this study to evaluate the possibility of incineration bottom ash as an alternative construction materials. Bottom ashes from three different landfills with two different incineration methods were tested. Incineration methods are Stoker type Incinerator and Pyrolysis-Melting Treatment. Bottom ash can be used as an alternative granular material for construction based on the basic physical property and mechanical characteristics similar to those of sandy materials. However, the incineration method should be considered since it can affect the material and mechanical characteristics of the incineration bottom ash.

  • Melting slag generated from municipal-incinerator ash contains lots of impurities which have adverse effects on zeolite synthesis. These impurities are detrimental to zeolite synthesis, and the yield and purity of zeolite was decreased. And thus its performance is lowered. In melting slag, there are lots of components such as $Fe_2O_3$, FeO and CaO. To remove these impurities, we treated the melting slag with hydrochloric acid at initial pH 1, 3, 5, and 7. After the treatment, the $SiO_2,\;Fe_2O_3,\;and\;TiO_2$ ratios increased, but the $Al_2O_3,\;FeO,\;CaO,\;Na_2O$ and MgO ratios decreased. We reacted these treated slag in a NaOH solution under hydrothermal conditions at $80^{\circ}C$. The hydrothermal products from the slag and the slag treated at pH 7 and pH 5 were determined to be tobermorite, whereas those at pH 3 and pH 1, Na-P1 and Na-X zoelite respectively. CaO was found to inhibit the synthesis of zeolite.

  • With the advance of industrialization and urbanization, a lot of waste has been discharged and treated by incineration. But fly and bottom ashes are generated in this process. In addition, the treatment method to recycle sewage sludge and melting slag is required to manage these wastes. The objective of this research was to prepare of multi-functional brick which were made from MSWI (Municipal solid wastes incinerator) fly ash, sewage sludge and slag. The bricks were made by mixing raw materials and then drying for 24 hours. Next, they were dried for 24 hours at $160^{\circ}C$ and fired for 2 hours. Calcination temperature was changed to discuss the effect of temperature from $1,080^{\circ}C$ to $1,130^{\circ}C$. Compressive strength of a brick was creased with the increase of temperature. To increase mixing ratio of fly ash and slag reduce the compressive strength the optimal condition was the mixing ratio of fly ash : melting slag : sewage sludge : clay as 10 : 20 : 5 : 65 and $1,150^{\circ}C$ of calcination temperature. Compressive strength was obtained as about 41 MPa at this condition.
