A large grain YBCO bulk superconductor is fabricated by the top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) method. In the TSMG process, the seed crystal is placed on the top surface of a partially melted compact and therefore the seed crystal is frequently tilted during the melt process due to intrinsic unstable nature of Y211 particle +liquid phase mixture. In this work, we report the successful growth of single-domain YBCO bulk superconductors by a bottom-seeded melt growth (BSMG) method. Investigations on the trapped magnetic field and the microstructures of the synthesized specimens show that a bottom-seeded melt growth method has hardly affected on the crystal growth behavior, the microstructure development and the magnetic properties of the large grain YBCO bulk superconductors. The bottom-seeded melt growth method is clearly beneficial for the stable control of seed orientation through the melt process for the fabrication of a large grain YBCO bulk superconductor.

Directionally melt-textured high $T_c\;(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_y$ [(YNS)-123] superconductor was systematically investigated by the zone melt growth process in air. A sample prepared by this method showed well-textured microstructure, and $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})_{2}BaCuO_5$[(YNS)211] inclusions were uniformly dispersed in large $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_y$ [(YNS)123] matrix. High irreversibility field and magnetization hysteresis loop of the zone melt-textured (YNS)-123 sample exhibited the enhanced flux pinning, compared with $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_y$ (Y-123) sample without RE(rare earth). Critical current density of (YNS)-123 sample was $2.5{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$ at 2 T and 77 K.
It is clear that monocrystalline Silicon (Si) ingots are the key raw material for semiconductors devices. In the present industries markets, most of monocrystalline Silicon (Si) ingots are made by Czochralski Process due to their advantages with low production cost and the big crystal diameters in comparison with other manufacturing process such as Float-Zone technique. However, the disadvantage of Czochralski Process is the presence of impurities such as oxygen or carbon from the quartz and graphite crucible which later will resulted in defects and then lowering the efficiency of Si wafer. The heat transfer plays an important role in the formation of Si ingots. However, the heat transfer generates convection in Si molten state which induces the defects in Si crystal. In this study, a crystal growth simulation software was used to optimize the Si crystal growth process. The furnace and system design were modified. The results showed the melt-crystal interface shape can affect the Si crystal growth rate and defect points. In this study, the defect points and desired interface shape were controlled by specific crystal growth rate condition.
With an aim of comparison, single grain Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) bulk superconductors were fabricated using a liquid infiltration growth (LIG) process and a conventional melt growth (MTG) process with top seeding. The MTG process uses an $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(Y123) powder as a precursor, while the LIG process uses $Y_2BaCuO_5(Y211)/Ba_3Cu_5O_8(Y035)$ pre-forms. The growth of a single Y123 domain on the top seed was successful in the both processes. Different feature between the two processes is the interior microstructure regarding the critical current density ($J_c$). The LIG-processed YBCO sample showed a lower porosity, more uniform distribution of Y211 particles and the enhanced Y211 refinement compared to the conventional MTG process. The $J_c$ improvement in the LIG process is attributed to the dispersion of finer Y211 particles as well as lower porosity within the Y123 superconducting matrix.
To fabricate large grain YBCO bulk superconductors by melt process, Sm123 single crystal with a high melting point are mostly used as seeds. However, it also uses Y123 film deposited on MgO single crystal substrate. This study investigated the growth behavior of the Y123 grain during a melt process when single grain YBCO bulk was used as a seed. Single grain Y123 bulk was grown when the seed size was small. When the seed size was relatively large, multiple grains were grown but the grains were still large. Y123 seed crystal was completely decomposed during high temperature anneal at 1040℃ and new Y123 crystals were nucleated during a slow cooling stage below a peritectic temperature. Thereafter, newly formed Y123 crystals from the seed area are thought to grow into the Y1.8 powder compact. The crystallographic orientations of newly nucleated Y123 grains are independent of the crystallographic orientation of Y123 seed. It is thought that the crystallographic orientation of newly nucleated Y123 crystal can be controlled by using Y211-free Y123 single crystal as a seed of homo-seeding melt growth.
Principles of a novel pulse growing method are described. The method realized in the crystal growing on a seed from melts under raw melt feeding provided a more reliable control of the crystallization process when producing large alkali halide crystals. The slow natural convection of the melt in the crucible at a constant melt level is intensified by rotating the crucible, while the crystal rotation favors a more symmetrical distribution of thermal stresses over the crystal cross-section. Optimum rotation parameters for the crucible and crystal have been determined. The spatial position oi the solid/liquid phase interface relatively to the melt surface, heaters and the crucible elements are considered. Basing on that consideration, a novel criterion is stated, that is, the immersion extent of the crystallization front (CF) convex toward the melt. When the crystal grows at a <> CF immersion, the raised CF may tear off from the melt partially or completely due to its weight. This results in avoid formation in the crystal. Experimental data on the radial crystal growth speed are discussed. This speed defines the formation of a gas phase layer at the crystal surface. The layer thickness il a function of time a temperature at specific values of pressure in the furnace and the free melt surface dimensions in the gap between the crystal and crucible wall. Analytical expressions have been derived for the impurity component mass transfer at the steady-state growth stage describing two independent processes, the impurity mass transfer along the <> path and its transit along the <> one. The heater (and thus the melt) temperature variation is inherent in any control system. It has been shown that when random temperature changes occur causing its lowering at a rate exceeding $0.5^{\circ}C/min$, a kind of the CF decoration by foreign impurities or by gas bubbles takes place. Short-term temperature changes at one heater or both result in local (i.e., at the front) redistribution of the preset axial growth speed.
High $T_c(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y[(YNS)-123]$ superconductors with/without $CeO_2$ additive were systematically investigated by the zone melt growth process in air. Cylindrical green rods of (YNS)-123 oxides were fabricated by cold isostatic pressing (CIP) method using rubber mould. A sample prepared by this method showed well-textured microstructure, and $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})_2BaCuO_5[(YNS)211]$ nonsuperconducting inclusions were uniformly dispersed in large $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y$[(YNS)123] superconducting matrix. In this study, optimum melting temperature and growth rate were $1100^{\circ}C$ and 3 mm/hr, respectively. The directionally melt-textured (YNS)-123 sample with $CeO_2$ additive showed an onset critical temperature $(T_c)\;T_c{\geq}93K$ and sharp superconducting transition.
In Cubic ZrO2 crystal growth by Skull method, it was examined on effect of homonization on melt as keeping ZrO2(90mol%)-Y2O3(10mol%) melt with 1hr, 2hr, 4hrs, 8hrs, 16hrs, respectively. The optimum homonizing condition in this system was obtained by the examination between quality of grown crystals and soaking time of melt. It was obtained that the lower quality crystal could be produced in the longer holding melt than the optimum soaking time of melt in spite of the supposedly well homonized state, because the melt stability is sensibly dependent on the convective state of melt in skull method (cold crucible process).
We have studied the electrical properties and microstructure of $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y[(YNS)-123]$ Oxides by rod-type seeded melt growth process(RSMG) in air atmosphere. Rod-type $NdBa_2Cu_3O_y${Nd-123) seed crystals made a extrusion process method, were used for achieving the ab-plane alignment having large grains perpendicular to the center of (YNS)-123 samples. The observations using SEM and TEM micrographs of the melt-textured (YNS)-123 samples revealed that the nonsuperconducting $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y[(YNS)-211]$ inclusions are uniformly distributed in the superconducting matrix. The microstructure and electrical properties were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM and DC SQUID magnetometer. The sample showed a sharp superconducting transition at 90 K. The magnetization values of the (YNS)-123 sample exhibited the enhanced electrical properties, compared with $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$(Y-123) sample.
