  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of oriental medicinal plant extracts added to chocolates on the moisture content, color, radical scavenging activity and sensory characteristics. The oriental medicinal plant extracts were added at a weight percentage of 0, 4 and 8%. As the ratio of the extracts in the chocolates increased, the moisture content, color, and radical scavenging activity increased. In sensory evaluation, significant differences (p<0.05) were shown in taste, bitterness, and overall acceptability depending on the addition of oriental medicinal plant extracts but there were no significant differences in chocolate aroma and texture.

  • Reaction of ethyl 4-chloro-2-phenylpyrimidine-4-carboxylate (4) with 5-chloro-2-methylthiophenol or 3-aryl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 4-triazole-5 thiol yielded the corresponding thioethers (5) and (8a, b), respectively. Careful alkaline hydrolysis of (5) yielded the corresponding carboxylic acid (6). Reaction of (4) with p-aminoacetophenone yielded compound (10) which was reacted with certain aromatic aldehyde to afford the$\alpha,\beta$-unsaturated ketones (11a-d). Condensation of (11a-d) with malononitrile or phenylhydrazine yielded the 2-amino-3-cyanopyridines (12a-f) or the 2-pyrazolines (13a, b) respectively. Seven representative compounds were tested for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against some pathogenic micro-organisms, some of them were proved to be active.

  • Apio nucleosides whose 4'-hydroxymethyl group moves to 3'-position exhibit interesting biological activity such as antitumor or antiviral activity. On the other hand, neplanocin A and aristeromycin are the representative of the carbocyclic nucleosides and have been recognized as potent inhibitors of S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase. Based on these findings. it was of great interest to design apio analogues of neplanocin A and aristeromycin. (omitted)

  • Irradiated and non-irradiated Korean medicinal herbs were extracted by water and 70% ethanol. Antimicrobial activity of these extracts were invesigated against selected food hygiene microoganisms. The ethanol extracts of the non-irradiated Agrimonia pilosa ledebour japonica Nakai, Curcuma longa Linne and Angelica gigas Nakai were completely inhibited on four species of bacteria, such as Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Clostridium perfringenes, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. Also, above four strains did not have antibacterial activity in the water-ethanol mixtures. Futhermore, the ehtanol extracts of the non-irradiated Agimonia pilosa ledebour Japonica Nakai, Curcuma Iedoaria Roscoe, Curcuma longa Linne and Scutellaria baikalensis George were shown inhibitory effects against Aspergillus flavus and Pen icillium islandicum. And the water extract of Scutellaria baikalensis George was the same effect to these molds. Essentially the same results were observed when samples irradiated at a dose of 10 kGy.

  • This study was carried out to examine antimicrobial substances from medicinal plants, the ethanol extracts of 38 medicinal plants were tested for the antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300. The extracts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Sophora flavescens, Dryopteris crassirhizoma, and Pinas densiflora showed significant antimicrobial activities against both S. aureus ATCC 25923 and methicillin-resistant S. aureus ATCC 43300. The extract of Dryopteris crassirhizoma among these medical plants showed the highest antimicrobial activity. These results suggested that the extracts from Dryopteris crassirhizoma, Sophora flavescens, Pinas densiflora, and Glycyrrhiza uralensis could be the potential source of antimicrobial agents against methicillin-resistant S. aureus and S. aureus.

  • Aqueous extracts of medicinal plants traditionally used in the East Asia such as China, Korea, and Japan were screened for inotropic activity using isolated rabbit atria. Among the twenty-one aqueous-extracts from medicinal plants, the aqueous extracts of Convallaria keiskei(ACK) and rhizome of Coptis chinesis (ACC) were found to exhibit distinctive positive inotropic activity. The aqueous extracts of C. keiskei and rhizome of C. chinensis significantly increased atrial stroke volume and pulse pressure in beating rabbit atria. These findings suggest that the aqueous extracts of C. keiskei and rhizome of C. chinensis enhance the cardiac muscle contractility and then could be useful for the treatment of cardiac failure.

  • In the present study, some quinoline derivatives have been synthesized like 8-methoxy-4-methyl-2-amino-(3'-chloro-2'-oxo-4'-substituted aryl-1'-azetidinyl)quinolines 8-12 and 8-methoxy-4-methyl-2-amino-(2'-substituted aryl-4'-oxo-1',3'-thiazolidin-3'-yl) quinolines 13-17 from 8-methoxy-4-methyl-2-(substituted arylidenyliminoamino)-quinolines 3-7. The structural assignments of these compounds were based on spectral (IR, $^1H$-NMR, Mass) and elemental (C, H, N) analysis. Further, these compounds were evaluated for antibacterial activity against various bacterial strains. Three compounds 10, 11 and 16 were found to exhibit potent antibacterial activity as compared to the standard drug amphicillin.

  • Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) is predicted to be therapeutic target in treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Thus, in order to search for PTP1B inhibitors, we screened the inhibitory activity of PTP1B in the water extracts of 84 medicinal herbs. Among them, the extracts of Pini Folium, Magnoliae Cortex, Artemisiae asiaticae Herba, Schizonepetae Herba, Menthae Herba, Mume Fructus, Cimicifugae Rhizoma, and Amomi Cardamomi Fructus showed relatively significant (58-68%) inhibitory activity against PTP1B. Especially, the methylene chloride fraction of the methanol extract of Menthae Herba (81% inhibition at 30 ${\mu}g$/ml) showed more potent inhibitory activity against PTP1B than others.
