  • The purpose of this study is to classify TIFF images, PNG images, and JPEG images using deep learning, and to compare the accuracy by verifying the classification performance. The TIFF, PNG, and JPEG images converted from chest X-ray DICOM images were applied to five deep neural network models performed in image recognition and classification to compare classification performance. The data consisted of a total of 4,000 X-ray images, which were converted from DICOM images into 16-bit TIFF images and 8-bit PNG and JPEG images. The learning models are CNN models - VGG16, ResNet50, InceptionV3, DenseNet121, and EfficientNetB0. The accuracy of the five convolutional neural network models of TIFF images is 99.86%, 99.86%, 99.99%, 100%, and 99.89%. The accuracy of PNG images is 99.88%, 100%, 99.97%, 99.87%, and 100%. The accuracy of JPEG images is 100%, 100%, 99.96%, 99.89%, and 100%. Validation of classification performance using test data showed 100% in accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score. Our classification results show that when DICOM images are converted to TIFF, PNG, and JPEG images and learned through preprocessing, the learning works well in all formats. In medical imaging research using deep learning, the classification performance is not affected by converting DICOM images into any format.

  • Endoscope image is the shape that a doctor sees inside of patient through endoscope. The characteristics of these images are much effected by the light source of endoscope, specially areas in short distance from a light have much light source and look clear, but areas in long distance from a light look dark relatively because of little light quantity. So we developed a new level adaptive image enhancer for the dark area in a endoscope image. The algorithm we made consists of three parts ; 1) Classification of histogram in segmented area 2) Smoothing and Adaptive Histogram Equalization 3) Adaptive Histogram Modification.

  • The development of midinfrared (mid-IR) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) has enabled rapid high-contrast measurement of the mid-IR spectra of biological tissues. Several studies have compared the differences between the mid-IR spectra of colon cancer and noncancerous colon tissues. Most mid-IR spectrum classification studies have been proposed as machine-learning-based algorithms, but this results in deviations depending on the initial data and threshold values. We aim to develop a process for classifying colon cancer and noncancerous colon tissues through a deep-learning-based convolutional-neural-network (CNN) model. First, we image the midinfrared spectrum for the CNN model, an image-based deep-learning (DL) algorithm. Then, it is trained with the CNN algorithm and the classification ratio is evaluated using the test data. When the tissue microarray (TMA) and routine pathological slide are tested, the ML-based support-vector-machine (SVM) model produces biased results, whereas we confirm that the CNN model classifies colon cancer and noncancerous colon tissues. These results demonstrate that the CNN model using midinfrared-spectrum images is effective at classifying colon cancer tissue and noncancerous colon tissue, and not only submillimeter-sized TMA but also routine colon cancer tissue samples a few tens of millimeters in size.

  • Tumors of the brain are the deadliest, with a life expectancy of only a few years for those with the most advanced forms. Diagnosing a brain tumor is critical to developing a treatment plan to help patients with the disease live longer. A misdiagnosis of brain tumors will lead to incorrect medical treatment, decreasing a patient's chance of survival. Radiologists classify brain tumors via biopsy, which takes a long time. As a result, the doctor will need an automatic classification system to identify brain tumors. Image classification is one application of the deep learning method in computer vision. One of the deep learning's most powerful algorithms is the convolutional neural network (CNN). This paper will introduce a novel deep learning structure and image gradient to classify brain tumors. Meningioma, glioma, and pituitary tumors are the three most popular forms of brain cancer represented in the Figshare dataset, which contains 3,064 T1-weighted brain images from 233 patients. According to the numerical results, our method is more accurate than other approaches.

  • The amount of data generated from medical images is increasingly exceeding the limits of professional visual analysis, and the need for automated medical image analysis is increasing. For this reason, this study evaluated the classification and accuracy according to the presence or absence of tumor using Inception V3 deep learning model, using MRI medical images showing normal and tumor findings. As a result, the accuracy of the deep learning model was 90% for the training data set and 86% for the validation data set. The loss rate was 0.56 for the training data set and 1.28 for the validation data set. In future studies, it is necessary to secure the data of publicly available medical images to improve the performance of the deep learning model and to ensure the reliability of the evaluation, and to implement modeling by improving the accuracy of labeling through labeling classification.

  • In this paper, a stacked convolutional autoencoder model is proposed in order to classify Alzheimer's disease with high accuracy in PET/CT images. The proposed model makes use of the latent space representation - which is also called the bottleneck, of the encoder-decoder architecture: The input image is sent through the pipeline and the encoder part, using stacked convolutional filters, extracts the most useful information. This information is in the bottleneck, which then uses Softmax classification operation to classify between Alzheimer's disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Normal Control. Using the data from Dong-A University, the model performs classification in detecting Alzheimer's disease up to 98.54% accuracy.

  • In this paper, we deal with a liver fibrosis classification problem using ultrasound B-mode images. Commonly representative methods for classifying the stages of liver fibrosis include liver biopsy and diagnosis based on ultrasound images. The overall liver shape and the smoothness and roughness of speckle pattern represented in ultrasound images are used for determining the fibrosis stages. Although the ultrasound image based classification is used frequently as an alternative or complementary method of the invasive biopsy, it also has the limitations that liver fibrosis stage decision depends on the image quality and the doctor's experience. With the rapid development of deep learning algorithms, several studies using deep learning methods have been carried out for automated liver fibrosis classification and showed superior performance of high accuracy. The performance of those deep learning methods depends closely on the amount of datasets. We propose an enhanced U-net architecture to maximize the classification accuracy with limited small amount of image datasets. U-net is well known as a neural network for fast and precise segmentation of medical images. We design it newly for the purpose of classifying liver fibrosis stages. In order to assess the performance of the proposed architecture, numerical experiments are conducted on a total of 118 ultrasound B-mode images acquired from 78 patients with liver fibrosis symptoms of F0~F4 stages. The experimental results support that the performance of the proposed architecture is much better compared to the transfer learning using the pre-trained model of VGGNet.

  • In this paper, we propose an automated method for the ground-glass nodule(GGN) classification using GGN-Net based on intensity, texture, and shape-enhanced images in chest CT images. First, we propose the utilization of image that enhances the intensity, texture, and shape information so that the input image includes the presence and size information of the solid component in GGN. Second, we propose GGN-Net which integrates and trains feature maps obtained from various input images through multiple convolution modules on the internal network. To evaluate the classification accuracy of the proposed method, we used 90 pure GGNs, 38 part-solid GGNs less than 5mm with solid component, and 23 part-solid GGNs larger than 5mm with solid component. To evaluate the effect of input image, various input image set is composed and classification results were compared. The results showed that the proposed method using the composition of intensity, texture and shape-enhanced images showed the best result with 82.75% accuracy.

  • Cardiomegaly is one of the most common diseases seen on chest X-rays, but if it is not detected early, it can cause serious complications. In view of this, in recent years, many researches on image analysis in which deep learning algorithms using artificial intelligence are applied to medical care have been conducted with the development of various science and technology fields. In this paper, we would like to evaluate whether the Inception V3 deep learning model is a useful model for the classification of Cardiomegaly using chest X-ray images. For the images used, a total of 1026 chest X-ray images of patients diagnosed with normal heart and those diagnosed with Cardiomegaly in Kyungpook National University Hospital were used. As a result of the experiment, the classification accuracy and loss of the Inception V3 deep learning model according to the presence or absence of Cardiomegaly were 96.0% and 0.22%, respectively. From the research results, it was found that the Inception V3 deep learning model is an excellent deep learning model for feature extraction and classification of chest image data. The Inception V3 deep learning model is considered to be a useful deep learning model for classification of chest diseases, and if such excellent research results are obtained by conducting research using a little more variety of medical image data, I think it will be great help for doctor's diagnosis in future.
