  • A study on a creep-fatigue crack growth behavior has been carried out for a cylindrical structure with weldments by using a structural test and an evaluation according to the assessment procedures. The creep-fatigue crack growth behavior following the creep-fatigue crack initiation has been assessed by using the French A16 procedure and the conservatism for the present structural test has been examined. The structural specimen is a welded cylindrical shell made of 316 L stainless steel (SS) for one half of the cylinder and 304 SS for the other half. In the creep-fatigue test, the hold time under a tensile load which produces the primary nominal stress of 45 MPa was one hour at $600^{\circ}C$ and creep-fatigue loads of 600 cycles were applied. The evaluation results for the creep-fatigue crack propagation were compared with those of the observed images from the structural test. The assessment results for the creep-fatigue crack behavior according to the French Al6 procedure showed that the Al6 is overly conservative for the creep-fatigue crack propagation in the present case with a short hold time of one hour.

  • Coolant rubber hoses for automotive radiators under thermal and mechanical loadings can be degraded and thus failed due to the influences of the locally formed electricity. In this study, an advanced test method was developed to simulate the failure problem of the rubber hose. For carbon black filled EPDM (ethylene-propylene dine monomer) rubber used as a radiator hose material the ageing behaviors by the electro-chemical stresses combined with a tensile strain were analyzed. As the tensile strain increased, the current of the rubber specimen reduced indicating an increase of the internal defects and electrical resistance of the rubber specimen. Elongation at break and IRHD hardness rapidly decreased with increasing the ageing time. Both electro-chemical stress and mechanical tensile stress clearly accelerated the degradation of EPDM rubber.

  • In the vibration test, Most of the test specifications is standardized methods of sinusoidal excitation. However, in accordance with the ability of the test equipment progress and developments of electronic technology, methods of random vibration test is standardized in the MIL standard. Therefore, in this study, we tried to analyze Missile Guidance Structure using a finite element analysis with ABAQUS 6.13 that is commercial program. First, Random response analysis is analyzed. Following analyzing the results, we wanted to find the model that is lightweight and resonance does not occur.

  • This research was undertaken to clarify effects of thermal aging on electrochemical and mechanical properties of superaustenitic stainless steel and to detect the material degradation nondestructively. The steel was artificially aged at $300{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ for $240{\sim}10,000h$ and the mechanical properties were investigated at $-196{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ using small punch(SP) test. Also, the change in electrochemical properties caused by effects of thermal aging on superaustenitic stainless steel was investigated using electrochemical anodic polarization test in a KOH electrolyte. Carbides and ${\eta}-phase(Fe_2Mo)$ precipitated in the grain boundaries seem to deteriorate the mechanical properties by decreasing cohesive strength in the grain boundaries and to promote the current density observed in electrochemical polarization curves, The electrochemical and mechanical properties of superaustenitic stainless steel decreased significantly in the specimen aged at $650^{\circ}C$ corresponding to the sensitization temperature for conventional austenitic stainless steels.

  • There is a need for light weight and high stiffness characteristics in the building structure as well as aircraft and cars. So fiber reinforced plastic with the addition of reinforcing agent such as glass fiber, carbon fiber, aramid fiber is utilized in this regard. In this study, mechanical strength, flow property and part shrinkage of glass fiber and carbon fiber reinforced PA6 were examined according to reinforcement content such as 10%, 20%, and 30%, and reinforcement type. The mechanical property was measured by a tensile test with specimen fabricated by injection molding and the flow property was measured by spiral test. In addition, we measured the part shrinkage of fiber reinforced PA6 that affects part quality. As glass fiber content increases, mechanical property increased by 75.4 to 182%, and flow property decreased by 18.9 to 39.5%. And part shrinkage decreased by 52.9 to 60.8% in the flow direction, and decreased by 48.2 to 58.1% in the perpendicular to the flow direction. As carbon fiber content increases, mechanical property increased by 180 to 276%, flow property decreased by 26.8 to 42.8%, and part shrinkage decreased by 65.0 to 71.8% and 69.5 to 72.7% in the flow direction and the direction perpendicular to the flow respectively.

  • In order to verify the analytical methods predicting failure behavior of cracked piping, full-scale pipe tests are crucial in nuclear power plant piping. For this reason, series of international test programs have been conducted. However, full-scale pipe tests require expensive testing equipment and long period of testing time. The objective of this paper is to develop a test system which can economically simulate the full-scale pipe test regarding the integrity evaluation. This system provides the failure behavior of cracked pipe by testing a wide-plate specimen. The system provides the failure behavior of cracked pipe by testing a wide-plate specimen. The system was developed for the integrity evaluation of nuclear piping based on the methodology of hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulation. Using this simulator, the piping integrity can be evaluated based on the elastic-plastic behavior of full-scale pipe, and the high cost full-scale pipe test may be replaced with this economical system.

  • In this study, we propose an advanced nanoindentaion test, Nano Pillar Compression Test (NPCT) to measure a stress-strain relation for micro scale polymer structures. Firstly, FEM analysis is performed to research behavior of micro polymer pillars in several specimen aspect ratios and different friction conditions between specimen and tip. Based on the FEM results, micro scale UV-curable polymer pillars are fabricated on a substrate by Nano Stereo Lithography (NSL). To measure their mechanical properties, uniaxial compression test is performed using nanoindentation apparatus with flat-ended diamond tip. In addition, the dependency of compression properties on loading condition and specimen size are discussed.

  • Semi-active cabin air suspension system improves driver's comfort by controlling the damping characteristics in accordance with driving situation. For the driver's comfort evaluation, test procedure has the two methodologies which are filed test and lab test. A field test method has a drawback. It requires a lot of time and money on repetitive test, due to the sensitivity of field test. On the other hand, the test with six axes simulation table at laboratory can obtain the repeatability of test, better than the field test method. In this paper, the procedures of ride performance test and control logic tuning with the table are presented. Drive files of the table can be represented with the almost same input condition as field test data. According to the result from the comparative test using six axes simulation table between passive and semi-active system by making ECU logic tuning, the RMS acceleration of semi-active cabin air suspension system was reduced by 29.6% compared with passive system.

  • In this paper, we propose a slurry jet (water containing $1\;{\mu}m$ alumina particles) impact test in order to quickly evaluate the wear properties of physical vapor deposited (PVD) coatings on commercial cutting tools. Linear wear was obtained for bothe coating and substrate material, and the penetration through the coating into the substrate was signified by a sharp increase in slope of the wear versus time curve. The PVD coatings deposited on the tools showed the same wear rates as those on reference plate specimens produced by the same coating methods. We conclude that our proposed evaluation technique for coatings is considerably useful as a screening test when evaluating coated tools like twist drills, taps, end mills, gear hobs, etc.

  • With the growing traffic density and increasing comfort requirements, the automation of the drive train will gain importance in vehicles. The automatic clutch actuation relieves the drivers especially in urban driving and stop-and-go traffic conditions. In this paper, an electro-mechanical actuator for clutch-by-wire (CBW) system is implemented as the first stage for the development of automated manual transmissions. The prototype of CBW actuator is designed systematically, which is composed of the electric motor, worm & worm wheel and crank mechanism. And the test rig is developed to perform the basic function test for the automatic clutch actuation. The developed prototype is validated by the experimental results on the test rig.
