This paper presents a novel MEMS condenser microphone with rigid backplate to enhance acoustic characteristics. The MEMS condenser microphone consists of membrane and backplate chips which are bonded together by gold-tin (Au/Sn) eutectic solder bonding. The membrane chip has 2.5 mm${\times}$2.5 mm, $0.5{\mu}m$ thick low stress silicon nitride membrane, 2 mm${\times}$2 mm Au/Ni/Cr membrane electrode, and $3{\mu}m$ thick Au/Sn layer. The backplate chip has 2 mm${\times}$2 mm, $150{\mu}m$ thick single crystal silicon rigid backplate, 1.8 mm${\times}$1.8 mm backplate electrode, and air gap, which is fabricated by bulk micromachining and silicon deep reactive ion etching. Slots and $50-60{\mu}m$ radius circular acoustic holes to reduce air damping are also formed in the backplate chip. The fabricated microphone sensitivity is $39.8{\mu}V/Pa$ (-88 dB re. 1 V/Pa) at 1 kHz and 28 V polarization voltage. The microphone shows flat frequency response within 1 dB between 20 Hz and 5 kHz.
Refering to the articles "Squeezing rocks in tunnels(Barla, 1995)" and "Tunnelling under squeezing rock conditions(Barla 2002)" this article deals with technologies for design, stability analysis and construction of the tunnel being driven in the squeezing rock mass. The definition of this type of behavior was proposed by ISRM(1994). The identification and quantification of squeezing is given according to both the empirical and semi-empirical methods available to anticipate the potential of squeezing problems in tunnelling. Based on the experiences and lessons learned in recent years, the state of the art in modem construction methods was reported, when dealing with squeezing rock masses by either conventional or mechanical excavation methods. The closed-form solutions available for the analysis of the rock mass response during tunnel excavation are described in terms of the ground characteristic line and with reference to some elasto-plastic models for the given rock mass. Finally numerical methods were used for the simulation of different models and for design analysis of complex excavation and support systems, including three-dimensional conditions in order to quantify the influence of the advancing tunnel face to the deformation behavior of the tunnel.

This paper aims to develop a practical approach to modeling of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) strengthened masonry panels. The main objective is to provide suitable relations for the material characterization of the masonry constituents so that the finite element applications of elasto-plastic theory achieves a close fit to the experimental load-displacement diagrams of the walls subjected to in-plane shear and compression. Two relations proposed for masonry columns confined with FRP are adjusted for the cohesion and the internal friction angle of both units and mortar. Relating the mechanical parameters to the uniaxial compression strength and the hydrostatic pressure acting over the wall surface, the effects of major and intermediate principal stresses ${\sigma}_1$ and ${\sigma}_2$ on the yielding and the shape of the deviatoric section are then reflected into the analyses. Performing nonlinear finite element analyses (NLFEA) for the three walls tested in two different studies, their stress-strain response and failure modes are eventually evaluated through the comparisons with the experimental behavior.
In purpose of introducing the inverse magnetostrictive properties into the structural ceramics, $Al_2O_3$ based nanocomposites dispersed with nano-sized Ni-Co particles were studied. The composites were fabricated by the hydrogen reduction and hot-pressing of $Al_2O_3$ and NiO-CoO mixed powders. The mixtures were prepared by using Ni- and Co-nitrate $(Ni(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\;6H_2O\;and\;Co(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\6H_2O)$ as source materials for the Ni-Co particles. Microstructural observations revealed that nano-sized Ni-Co particles were dispersed homogeneously at $Al_2O_3$ grain boundaries. High strength above 1 GPa was obtained for the $Al_2O_3/10$ wt% Ni-Co nanocomposite fabricated by a controlled powder preparation process. The inverse magnetostrictive response to applied stress was obtained due to the presence of dispersed Ni-Co particles, which indicates a possibility to incorporate new functions into the structural ceramics without loosing the mechanical properties.
The auxiliary-feed-water pump (AFWP) used to supply water during a station black out situation at nuclear power plants should meet the seismic qualification regulations stipulated in IEEE Std 323 and 344, so as to withstand earthquakes or dangerous situations. Here, we establish a model for the estimation of the structural integrity of this type of pump. If the natural frequency that results from a modal analysis is less than 33 Hz, we adopt a dynamic analysis, instead of a static analysis. A dynamic analysis was carried out taking into consideration seismic conditions such as the floor response spectra (FRS), an operation-base earthquake (OBE), and a safe-shutdown earthquake (SSE). Finally, an analytical estimation of the structural integrity of an AFWP is made through a comparison of calculated values and allowable values. If the result is less than the allowable stress, the pump is deemed to have good structural integrity. In addition, future studies will involve a stability check for rotor accidents that may occur during the operation of the pump.
Alloy 617 is the one of the leading candidate materials for intermediate heat exchangers(IHX) of a very high temperature reactor(VHTR) system. Some of the components are joined by many welding techniques and therefore the welded joints are inevitable in the construction of systems. In the present paper, the low cycle fatigue(LCF) behaviors of Alloy 617 base metal(BM) and the gas tungsten arc welded (GTAWed) weld joints(WJ) are investigated experimentally under strain controlled LCF tests. Fully axial total-strain controlled tests have been conducted at room temperature with total strain ranges of 0.6, 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5%. The weld joints have shown a lower fatigue lives compared with base metals at all the testing conditions. The weld joints have shown a higher cyclic stress response behavior than base metal. Both BM and WJ exhibited cyclic strain hardening behavior, depending on the total strain range. In addition, the strain-life parameters for BM and WJ were determined, based on Coffin-Manson equations.
This paper proposes a mechanical model to describe the load-deformation responses of the reinforced concrete plate members under service load state. An Analytical method is introduced on the basis of the rotating crack model which considers equilibrium, compatibility conditions, load-strain relationship of cracked member, and constitutive law for materials. The tension stiffening effect in reinforced concrete structures is taken into account by the average tensile stress-strain relationship from the load-strain relationship for the cracked member and the constitutive law for material. The strain compatibility is used to find out the crack direction because the crack direction is an unknown variable in the equilibrium and compatibility conditions. The proposed theory is verified by the numerous experimental data such as the crack direction, moment-steel strain relationship, moment-crack width relationship. The present paper can provide some basis for the provision of the definition of serviceability for plate structures of which reinforcements are deviated from the principal stresses, because the present code defines the serviceability by the deflection, crack control, vibration and fatigue basically for the skeletal members. The proposed theory is applicable to predict the service load state behavior of a variety of reinforced concrete plate structures such as skew slab bridges, the deck of skew girder bridges.

Different kinds of forces can be applied to the biological tissue. The analysis of the applied force is highly important to explain the mechanism of cellular response. In this study, the applied force to the collagen gel was analyzed by the finite elements analysis. The model received two different kinds of static force (compression and tension). The force range was 50g to 400g. In results, von Mises stress was concentrated in the peripheral region in the compression model. It was concentrated in the central area in the tension model. However, the compressive force was high in the peripheral area of the compression model and the tensional force was also high in the same area of the tension model. In conclusion, the applied force could be different to the region and it should be considered in the experiment to analyze the effects of the mechanical force on the cells.
As a brittle and heterogeneous material, concrete behaves differently under different stress conditions and its bulk strength is loading rate dependent. To a large extent, the varying behavioural properties of concrete can be explained by the mechanical failure processes at a mesoscopic level. The development of a computational mesoscale model in a general finite element environment, as presented in the preceding companion paper (Part 1), makes it possible to investigate into the underlying mechanisms governing the bulk-scale behaviour of concrete under a variety of loading conditions and to characterise the variation in quantitative terms. In this paper, we first present a series of parametric studies on the behaviour of concrete material under quasi-static compression and tension conditions. The loading-face friction effect, the possible influences of the non-homogeneity within the mortar and ITZ phases, and the effect of randomness of coarse aggregates are examined. The mesoscale model is then applied to analyze the dynamic behaviour of concrete under high rate loading conditions. The potential contribution of the mesoscopic heterogeneity towards the generally recognized rate enhancement of the material compressive strength is discussed.
In strengthening structure, the external post-tensioning method which secure clearness in the structure analysis process is adopted to bridge as well as architecture structure. Therefore, the major objective of this study is to investigate the effects and application of external post-tensioning method for steel plate girder bridge. It analyzed the mechanical behaviors of steel plate girder bridge with applying external post-tensioning on the finite element analysis and laboratory test for the dynamic characteristics. As a result, the reinforcement of steel plate girder bridge the external post-tensioning method are obviously effective for the response which is non-reinforced. The analytical and experimental study are carried out to investigate the post-tension force decrease stress and deflection on steel plate girder bridge for serviceability. It is investigated that the change degree of natural frequency is very low with applying the external post-tensioning method. The servicing steel plate girder bridge with external post-tensioning is the reasonable reinforcement measures which could be secured the stability of dynamic behavior and increase a dropped durability.
