  • Various experimental data, including mixing areas, cross correlation factors, surface flow patterns on nozzle walls, and far field noise spectra, was used to draw a noise control mechanism in a supersonic jet. In the underexpanded case, mixing of the jet air with ambient air was significantly enhanced as presented before, and mixing noise was also dramatically reduced. Screech tones, in the overexpanded case, were effectively suppressed by trailing edge modifications, although mixing enhancement was not noticeable. From mixing and noise performance of nozzles with modified trailing edges, enhancing mixing through streamwise vortices seems an effective way to reduce mixing noise in the underexpanded flow regime. However, screech tones in the overespanded flow regime is well controlled or suppressed by making shock cells and/or spanwise large scale structures irregular and/or less organized by a proper selection of trailing edges. The noise field in the overexpanded flow regime was greatly affected by the symmetricity of the nozzle exit geometry. In the underexpanded flow regime, the effects of the symmetricity of the nozzle exit on mixing were negligible.

  • The intermediate mixing chamber is one of various methods for improving the regression rate and combustion efficiency of the hybrid rocket. The mixing chamber with its non-combustible material makes the propulsion performance increase, but it leads to a low fuel-loading density in the combustion chamber; therefore, this performance-related trade-off between the mixing chamber and the low fuel-loading density was studied. In this study, the trade-off was conducted by comparing the intermediate-mixing-chamber case with a w/o-mixing-chamber case. The small hybrid-sounding rocket is designed with internal ballistics for comparing the rocket length to the weight. In addition, an external ballistic analysis was conducted for comparing the performances of the w/- and w/o-mixing-chamber cases. As a result, the intermediate-mixing-chamber case shows that the length and the weight were decreased to 12 % and 8 %, respectively; furthermore, when compared with the normal cases, the estimated altitude result of the w/-mixing-chamber case was increased to approximately 75 m.

  • Twin-screw kneader is an efficient polymer processing equipment. In this paper, the mixing performance of one novel intermeshing counter-rotating twin-screw kneader with different tip angles of the male rotor is simulated using the mesh superimposition technique (MST). Statistical analysis is carried out for the flow field using particle tracking technique, and distributive mixing performance is evaluated using the residence time distribution and segregation scale, while the dispersive mixing performance is estimated using the parameters such as shear rate, stretching rate and mixing index. The results show that the best distributive mixing performance is achieved when the tip angle is 0o, while the optimal dispersive mixing performance is obtained when the tip angle is 20o. The results in this paper provide a data basis for the selection of parameters and optimization of the performance for the screw rotors.

  • Recess is a geometrical configuration shape that the exit surface of an inner injector is located at a certain length inward from that of an outer injector. It is known to have the characteristics that it can augment mixing efficiency and flame stabilization through internal mixing of propellant in it. So, various experiments, such as backlit stroboscopic photography, phase Doppler particle analyzer(PDPA) and mechanical patternator, were performed at several recess lengths to grasp its effect on the spray characteristics of spray angle, breakup length, atomization and' mixing. Recess length was normalized to dimensionless recess number and two principal mechanisms of impingement and swirl recovery were introduced to explain its influence on the spray characteristics. The effect of recess on SMD doesn't appear significantly near the recess number where mixing efficiency attains to the maximum, whereas mass distribution and mixing efficiency are changed considerably. Thus, it can be inferred that a certain optimum recess number exists, where mixing efficiency becomes the maximum.

  • This paper investigates the linear stability of reacting mixing layers with special emphasis on the existence of multiple unstable modes. The governing equations for laminar flows are from two-dimensional compressible boundary-layer equations. The chemistry is a finite rate single step irreversible reaction with Arrhenius kinetics. For the incompressible reacintg mixing layer with variable density. A necessary condition for instability has been derived. The condition requires that the angular momentum, not the vorticity, to have a maximum in the flow domain. New inflectional modes of instability are found to exist in the outer part of the mixing layer. For the compressible reacting mixing layer, supersonic unstable modes may exist in the abscence of a generalized inflection point. The outer modes at high Mach numbers in the reacting mixing layer are continuations of the inflectional modes of low Mach number flows. However, the generalized inflection point is less important at supersonic flows.

  • Fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) has been successfully used to enhance the flexural toughness of concrete. As fibers are randomly oriented in FRC, they sometimes produce clumps that reduce the mechanical performance, and a properly chosen mixing protocol can be a way to minimize this problem. In this research, the effects of mixing method on the mechanical properties of FRC were investigated. The compressive strength, flexural strength, and flexural toughness were measured using three different mixing methods. It was shown from the results that the compressive strength and peak flexural load were not affected by changes in mixing method. However, in terms of flexural toughness, the changes in mixing method clearly affected the flexural toughness of FRC. The truck-mixed FRC outperformed two pan-mixed FRCs.

  • The multifrequency eddy current testing(ECT) have been proposed various frequency mixing algorithms. In this study, we compare these approaches to frequency mixing of ECT signals from steam generator tubes; time-domain optimization, discrete cosine transform-domain optimization. Specifically, in this study, two different frequency mixing algorithms, a time-domain optimization method and a discrete cosine transform(DCT) optimization method, are investigated using the experimental signals captured from the ASME standard tube. The DCT domain optimization method is computationally fast but produces larger amount of residue.

  • The fuel and oxidizer mixing process in the shock tube driven section is simulated numerically. The boundary condition is set based on an shock tube experimental condition. The objective is to predict the gas mixing time for experiments. In the experiment, the amount of fuel to be injected is determined in advance. Then, according to duration of fuel injection, 5 cases with the same fuel mass but different fuel mass flow rate are simulated. After fuel is injected into the driven section, the fuel and air will be mixed with each other through convection and diffusion processes. The mixing time is predicted numerically for experiments.

  • The present study investigates gas residence time and mixing characteristics for various swirl numbers generated by injection of secondary air into a lab-scale cylindrical combustor. Fine dust particles and butane gas were injected into the test chamber to study the gas residence time and mixing characteristics, respectively. The mixing characteristics were evaluated by standard deviation value of trace gas concentration at different measurement points. The measurement points were located 25 mm above the secondary air injection position. The trace gas concentration was detected by a gas analyzer. The gas residence time was estimated by measuring the temporal pressure difference across a filter media where the particles were captured. The swirl number of 20 for secondary air injection angle of 5$^{\circ}$ gave the best condition: long gas residence time and good mixing performance. Numerical calculations were also carried out to study the physical meanings of the experimental results, which showed good agreement with numerical results.

  • In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the characteristics of flame stabilization of the LFG mixing gas. LFG has merely half heating value compared with liquified natural gas but can be greatly utilized as a commercial fuel. In order to use LFG in practical combustors, Webbe Index and heating value of LFG mixing gas were adjusted by mixing LPG with LFG. The comparisons were conducted between CH$_4$and LFG mixing gas for searching the region of flame stabilization based upon the flame blowout at maximum fuel stream velocity. As a result, the flame stability of LFG mixing gas was not improved with that of CH$_4$in non-swirl and weak swirl diffusion flame. However, LFG mixing gas had wide flame stabilization region rather than CH$_4$with increasing ambient flow rate in strong swirl. It was also found that flame stability was affected by included quantity of inert gas such as CO$_2$in the weak swirl but by heating value of fuel in strong swirl.
