This study is to investigate the influence of catalyst loading quantity on the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) performance. In this paper, Pt-Ru and Pt-black loading as the catalyst were varied from 1 to $4mg/cm^2$ at the anode and cathode, respectively. The experiment was conducted with single fuel cell consisted of $5cm^2$ effective electrode area, serpentine type flow pattern and Nafion 117 membrane. Also, AC impedance and methanol crossover current were measured to investigate the performance loss precisely. As a result, the performance of fuel cell was significantly increased with the increase of cathode catalyst loading. However, the performance did not increase further above a certain Pt-Ru catalyst loading as the increase of anode catalyst loading.
This paper reviewed characteristics of fatigue crack behavior observed by changing various shapes of initial crack and magnitudes of loading in compact tension shear(CTS) specimen subjected to shear loading. In the high-loading condition, fatigue crack under shear loading propagated branching from the pre-crack tip. Meanwhile, the secondary fatigue crack in the low-loading condition which was created in the notch root due to friction on the pre-crack face grew to a main crack. Influenced by the mode II loading condition, fatigue crack propagation retardation appeared in the initial propagation region due to the reduction of crack driving force and friction on crack face. In both cases, however, fatigue cracks grew in tensile mode type. Propagation path of fatigue crack under the shear loading was 70 degree angle from the initial crack regardless of its shape and load magnitude.

A coupled algorithm is proposed which first considers the creation of porous structure of the material and then the simulations of response of mechanical components with porous structure to a variable load history. The simulations are carried out by the Prandtl operator approach in the finite element method (FEM) which enables structural simulations of mechanical components subjected to variable thermomechanical loads. Temperature-dependent material properties and multilinear kinematic hardening of the material can be taken into account by this approach. Several simulations are then performed for a tensile-compressive specimen made of a generic porous structure and mechanical properties of Aluminium alloy AlSi9Cu3. Variable mechanical load history has been applied to the specimens under constant temperature conditions. Comparison of the simulation results shows a considerable elastoplastic stress-strain response in the vicinity of pores whilst the surface of the gauge-length of the specimen remains in the elastic region of the material. Moreover, the distribution of the pore sizes seems more influential to the stress-strain field during the loading than their radial position in the gauge-length.

Large sized marine structures are used under corrosion environment of seawater and applied by severe service loading such as an ocean current, a billow and a tempest. Marine structures are usually constructed by lots of thick wall steel pipes joining welded joints. The thickness of such as steel pipes is usually more than 40mm. The such as steels are called "Thermo-Mechanical Control Process steel (TMCP steel)" strengthened by a heat treatment in process of steel manufactures. The failure, especially crack initiation, of marine structures was starting at weld joints under service condition. Then they should be designed by basis of the fatigue strength under seawater corrosion environment of weld joints. To clarity the fatigue crack initiation behavior is important more than to clarify the crack propagation behavior on the strength design of marine structures, because it is very difficult to find out the crack initiation and propagation phenomena and then even if it will be able to find out, it is considered that the refit of the damaged parts of welded joints have a technical difficulty under the sea. Therefore, it is most important to clarify the corrosion fatigue crack initiation behavior under the seawater condition. But, there is one big difficulty to make a test for thick plate specimen, for example thicker than 40mm. Because, it is need large capacity loading apparatus to test such as thick plate specimen. In this research, the new configuration specimen for fatigue crack initiation tests was proposed. Using this new specimen, it is easy to carry out the fatigue clack initiation tests with relatively low cyclic loading and to observe a fatigue crack initiation behavior.
In the present study, the combined effects of thermal and mechanical loadings on the interlaminar shear stresses of both moderately thin and thick composite laminated beams are numerically analyzed. The finite element modelling of laminated composite beams and analysis of interlaminar stresses are performed using the commercially available software package MSC NASTRAN/PATRAN. The validity of the finite element analysis (FEA) is demonstrated by comparing the experimental test results obtained due to mechanical loadings under the influence of thermal environment with those derived using the present FEA. Various parametric studies are also performed to investigate the effect of thermal loading on interlaminar stresses generated in symmetric, anti-symmetric, asymmetric, unidirectional, cross-ply, and balanced composite laminated beams of different stacking sequences with identical mechanical loadings and various boundary conditions. It is shown that the elevated thermal environment lead to higher interlaminar shear stresses varying with the stacking sequence, length to thickness ratio, ply orientations under identical mechanical loading and boundary conditions of the composite laminated beams. It is realized that the magnitude of the interlaminar stresses along xz plane is always much higher than those of along yz plane irrespective of the ply-orientation, length to thickness ratios and boundary conditions of the composite laminated beams. It is also observed that the effect of thermal environment on the interlaminar shear stresses in carbon-epoxy fiber reinforced composite laminated beams are increasing in the order of symmetric cross-ply laminate, unidirectional laminate, asymmetric cross-ply laminate and anti-symmetric laminate. The interlaminar shear stresses are higher in thinner composite laminated beams compared to that in thicker composite laminated beams under all environmental temperatures irrespective of the laminate stacking sequence, ply-orientation and boundary conditions.
Unlike the conventional triaxial test cells for cylindrical specimens, which impose uniform lateral confining pressures, the GREAT (Geo-Reservoir Experimental Analogue Technology) cell can exert differential radial stresses using eight independently-controlled pairs of lateral loading elements and thereby generate horizontal stress fields with various magnitudes and orientations. In the preceding companion paper, GREAT cell tests were numerically simulated under different mechanical loading conditions and the validity of the numerical model was investigated by comparing experimental and numerical results for circumferential strain. In the present study, we simulated GREAT cell tests for an artificial sample containing a fracture under both mechanical loading and fluid flow conditions. The numerical simulation was carried out by varying the mechanical properties of the fracture surface, which were unknown. The numerical responses (circumferential strains) of the sample were compared with experimental data and a good match was found between the numerical and experimental results under certain mechanical conditions of the fracture surface. Additionally, the effect of fluid flow conditions on the mechanical behavior of the sample was investigated and discussed.
Piezoelectricity is the capability of a piezoelectric material to change mechanical energy into electrical energy. The determination of electrical and mechanical properties plays a significant role in characterizing the piezoelectric material. The energy losses characteristics of piezoelectric material can be described by mechanical quality factor. In this paper, the output voltage and mechanical quality factor of Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT-4A) piezoelectric material is determined under various resistance and loading conditions by using the test setup. The commercial FEM software ABAQUS is used to analyze the performance of piezoelectric material under static loading conditions. It is observed that these properties affect the performance of a material particularly in the designing of smart structures. The experimental results are partially compared to the simulation values.

There is a trend towards the progressive use of higher operating temperatures and stresses to achieve improved efficiencies in power-generation equipment. It is important to perform the crack assessment under hightemperature and high-pressure conditions. The C(t)-integral is a key parameter in crack assessment for transient creep states. The estimation of the C(t)-integral is complex when considering the mechanical and thermal loads simultaneously. In this paper, we study estimation of C(t)-integral under combined mechanical and thermal load depending on loading conditions.

Heat is always the root of stress acting upon the electronic package, regardless of the heat due to the device itself during operation or working under the adverse environment. Due to the significant mismatch in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and the thermal conductivity (K) of the packaging components, on one hand intensive research has been conducted in order to enhance the device reliability by minimizing the mechanical stressing and deformation within the package. On the other hand the effectiveness of different thermal enhancements are pursued to dissipate the heat to avoid the overheating of the device. However, the interactions between the thermal-mechanical loading has not yet been address fully. in articular when the temperature gradient is considered within the package. To address the interactions between the thermal loading upon the mechanical stressing condition. coupled-field analysis is performed to account the interaction between the thermal and mechanical stress distribution. Furthermore, process induced defects are also incorporated into the analysis to determine the effects on thermal conducting path as well as the mechanical stress distribution. It is concluded that it feasible to consider the thermal gradient within the package accompanied with the mechanical analysis, and the subsequent effects of the inherent defects on the overall structural integrity of the package are discussed.

The characterization of adhesive property in multi-layer materials has been hot issue for a long time. In order to evaluate adhesive properties, we constructed fully automated system for the backward radiation of leaky Lamb wave. The backward radiation profiles were obtained for the bare steel plate and plates with rubber-loading. The rf waveforms and frequency spectra of backward radiation show the characteristics of involved leaky Lamb wave modes. As the thickness of rubber-loading increased, the amplitude of profile at the incident angle of $13.4^{\circ}$ exponentially decreased. Scanning the incident position over the partially rubber-loaded specimen shows good agreement with the actual rubber-loading. The backward radiation of leaky Lamb wave has great potential to evaluate the adhesive condition as well as material properties of plates.
