Chattering in cutting operations are usually a cumbersome part of the manufacturing process in mechanical. Particular, machining performance such as that of the boring process is limited by cutting condition at the movable components. Among various sources of chatter vibration, detrimental point in cutting condition is found a mechanical condition on overhang. It limits cutting speed, depth, surface roughness and tool wear failure as result because the all properties are varying with the metal removal process. In this case, we have to observe the resonance frequencies of a boring bar for continuous cutting. In the established research, boring bar vibration of cutting system has been measured with the aid of accelerometer. However, the inherent parameters of internal turning operations are severely limit for the real time monitoring on accelerometers. At this point, this paper is proposed other method for real time monitoring during continuous cutting with optical fiber at the inside of boring bar. This method has been used a plastic fiber in the special jig on boring bar by based on experimental modal analysis. In this study, improvement of monitoring system on continuous internal cutting was attempted using optical fiber sensor of inside type because usually chattering is investigated experimentally measuring the variation in chip thickness. It is demonstrated that the optical fiber sensor is possibility to measure of chattering with real time in boring process.
Recent noticeable advances of CNC machine tools have considerably improved productivity and precision in manufacturing processes. However, in the respect of productivity some defects still remain because selection of machining conditions entirely depends on the experiences of programmers. Usually, machining conditions such as feed rate and spindle speed have been selected conservatively by considering the worst cases, and it has brought the loss of machining efficiency. Thus, the improvement of cutting force controller has been done to regulate cutting force constantly and to maximize feedrate simultaneously in case that machining conditions change variously. In this study, sliding mode control with boundary layer is applied to milling process for cutting force regulation and in a commercial CNC machining center data transfer between PC and PMC (programmable machine controller) of CNC machine is done using a standard interface method. And in the cutting force measurement, an indirect cutting force measuring system using current signal of AC servo is adopted in order not to use high-priced equipment like tool dynamometer. The purpose of this study is to maximize the productivity in milling process, thus its results can be applied to cases such as rough cutting process.

Hard and brittle materials, such as Ni- and Ti-based alloys, glass, and ceramics, are very useful in aerospace, marine, electronics, and high-temperature applications because of their extremely versatile mechanical and chemical properties. One Ni-based alloy, Inconel 718, is a precipitation-hardenable material designed with exceptionally high yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, elastic modulus, and corrosion resistance with outstanding weldability and excellent creep-rupture properties at moderately high temperatures. However, conventional machining of this alloy presents a challenge to industry. Ultrasonic vibration cutting (UVC) has recently been used to cut this difficult-to-machine material and obtain a high quality surface finish. This paper describes an experimental study of the UVC parameters for Inconel 718, including the cutting force components, tool wear, chip formation, and surface roughness over a range of cutting conditions. A comparison was also made between conventional turning (CT) and UVC using scanning electron microscopy observations of tool wear. The tool wear measured during UVC at low cutting speeds was lower than CT. UVC resulted in better surface finishes compared to CT under the same cutting conditions. Therefore, UVC performed better than CT at low cutting speeds for all measures compared.
Rapid Prototyping(RP) techniques have their unique characteristics according to the working principles: stair-stepped surface of parts due to layer-by-layer stacking, low build speed caused by line-by-line solidification to build one layer, and additional post processing to improve surface roughness, so it is required very high cost to introduce and to maintain of RP apparatus. The objective of this study is to develop a new RP process, Variable Lamination Manufacturing using linear hotwire cutting technique and expandable polystyrene foam sheet as part material(VLM-S), and to investigate characteristics of part material, cutting characteristics by using linear hotwire cutting system and bonding. Experiments were carried out to investigate mechanical properties of part material such as anisotropy and directional tensile strength. In order to obtain optimal dimensional accuracy, surface roughness, and reduced cutting time, addition experiments were performed to find the relationship between cutting speed and cutting offset of hotwire, and heat generation of hotwire per unit length. So, adhesion strength tests according to ASTM test procedure showed that delamination did not occur at bonded area. Based on the data, a clover-shape was fabricated using unit shape part(USP) it is generated hotwire cutting. The results of present study have been reflected on the enhancement of the VLM-S process and apparatus.
The cutting processes used for monitoring engineering includes analysis and feedback about strange conditions, tools collision and tools wear in real time, for improving the working ratio of equipment and productivity. In this study, we proposed monitoring using profibus to increase the reliability as the most important factor for cutting monitoring. The profibus can increase the reliability of cutting monitoring for cutting torque of a main spindle motor and a feed motors through PLC-based interface.

This paper presents the experimental results to verify the atomization characteristics and environmental impact of cutting fluid. Even though cutting fluid improves the productivity through the cooling and lubricating effects, environmental impact due to cutting fluid usage is also increased on factory shop floor. Cutting fluid's aerosol via atomization process can generate human health risk such as lung cancer and skin diseases. Experimental results show that the generated fine aerosol of which particle size less than 10 micron appears near working zone under typical operation conditions. The aerosol concentration also exceeds NIOSH regulations. This research can be provided as a basis of environmental impact analysis for environmental consciousness.
In end milling processes, characterized by use of rotating tools, the underformed chip thickness varies periodically with the phase change of tool. In current study, as a new approach to analyse shear behaviors In the shear plane and chip-tool friction behavior chip-tool contact region during an end milling process. In this approach, an up-end milling process is transformed into an equivalent oblique cutting process. Experimental investigations for two sets of cutting tests i.e.. up-end milling and the equivalent oblique cutting test were performed to verify the presented model.
The purpose of this study is to investigate cutting characteristics and wear behavior in FCD500 ductile cast iron turning with different cutting tools, tungsten-carbide and CBN. Mechanical property, cutting characteristics and the application to the real industrial area is the final purpose. FDC500 ductile cast iron is now widely used in the various commercial vehicle parts for increased machine abilities which accrue more tensile strength with lower hardness. Several studies have been fulfilled for the material and heat-treatment area, but few with the cutting characteristics and wear behavior in the turning area.
This study manufactured a minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) supply system and identified the optimal MQL machining cutting conditions for plastic mold steel (SCM440). A series of experiments were consisted of twice. Optimal cutting conditions were derived using the Taguchi method, and cutting force variance; surface roughness; tool wear; and cutting temperature in dry, wet, and MQL machining were measured experimentally for these optimal conditions. The measured results decreased from dry to wet and MQL machining, being particularly large for dry machining due to increased cutting time. Measured MQL machining metrics were similar to those for wet machining, particularly for surface roughness, which is an index of machining quality.
Cutting edge plays an important role in generating machined surface. In order to consider the geometric effects of the cutting edge on mechanical states, the concept of ploughing force and stagnation point was introduced which explains the generating mechanism of machined surface during cutting. The effects of edge radius and nose radius of cutting tool on the distribution of residual stresses of the machined surface having several hardness were studied. Good machined surface having high compressive residual surface stresses can be achieved if cutting tools having large edge radius and small nose radius are used for cutting work materials having high hardness with high depth of cut. The magnitude of edge radius and the hardness of work material also affected the shape of the chip in orthogonal cutting.
