  • An alternative state estimation filtering algorithm is designed for continuous time systems with noises as well as control input. Two kinds of estimation filters, which have different measurement memory structures, are operated selectively in order to use both filters effectively as needed. Firstly, the estimation filter with infinite memory structure is operated for a certain continuous time system. Secondly, the estimation filter with finite memory structure is operated for temporarily uncertain continuous time system. That is, depending on the presence of uncertainty, one of infinite memory structure and finite memory structure filtered estimates is operated selectively to obtain the valid estimate. A couple of test variables and declaration rule are developed to detect uncertainty presence or uncertainty absence, to operate the suitable one from two kinds of filtered estimates, and to obtain ultimately the valid filtered estimate. Through computer simulations for a continuous time aircraft engine system with different measurement memory lengths and temporary model uncertainties, the proposed state estimation filtering algorithm can work well in temporarily uncertain as well as certain continuous time systems. Moreover, the proposed state estimation filtering algorithm shows remarkable superiority to the infinite memory structure filtering when temporary uncertainties occur in succession.

  • In cable structure maintenance, particularly for cable-stayed bridges, cable safety assessment relies on estimating cable tension. Conventionally, in Japan, cable tension is estimated from the natural frequencies of the cable using the higher-order vibration method. In recent years, dampers have been installed on cables to reduce cable vibrations. Because the higher-order vibration method is a method for damper-free cables, the damper must be removed to measure the natural frequencies of a cable without a damper. However, cables on some cable-stayed bridges have two dampers: one on the girder side and another on the tower side. Notably, removing and reinstalling the damper on the tower side are considerably more time- and labor-intensive. This paper introduces a tension estimation method for cables with two dampers, using natural frequencies. The proposed method was validated through numerical simulation and experiment. In the numerical tests, without measurement error in the natural frequencies, the maximum estimation error among 100 models was 3.3%. With measurement error of 2%, the average estimation error was within 5%, with a maximum error of 9%. The proposed method has high accuracy because the higher-order vibration method for a damper-free cable still has an estimation error of 5%. The experimental verification emphasizes the importance of accurate damper modeling, highlighting potential discrepancies between existing damper design formula and actual damper behavior. By revising the damper formula, the proposed method achieved accurate cable tension estimation, with a maximum estimation error of approximately 10%.

  • A practical range estimator based on the robust Kalman filter is proposed to solve the range estimation problem for surface to air missile(SAM) homing guidance. Apart from the previous works based on the extended Kalman filter(EKF) with bearing only measurement, the proposed scheme makes use of line-of-sight(LOS) rate to ensure the fast convergency at long-range. In this reason, the robust Kalman filter is considered to deal with LOS rate measurement error. The recursive linear structure of proposed filter is easy to implement and make it possible to reduce computational burdens. Moreover, it shows good estimation performance without specific guidance law such as oscillation proportional navigation guidance(OPNG).

  • In this paper, a method was presented to estimate the contamination degree of outdoor insulator by the measurement of surface leakage current. Contamination is one of the most important factor to determine the performance of insulator. Thus, it is very important to exam the contamination degree on the outdoor insulator. There are many limits, such as reliability of data, interval of measurement and similarity of environmental conditions, in conventional method. So, the estimation technique for contamination has been needed to monitor the accurate pollution degree of insulator in situ. In this investigation, phase difference was measured to compare the variance of phase difference with the contamination degree and relative humidity. From the result, we could confirm the capability of the estimation method.

  • In modern EMS, state estimation is used as a tool for monitoring how the power system operates. A state estimator iteratively calculates the voltage profile of the currently operating power system with voltage, current, and power measurements gathered from the entire system. It is usually assumed that all the measurements are obtained simultaneously. It, however, is not practically possible to maintain the synchronism of the measurements data. Recently, phasor measurements synchronized by satellites are used for the operation of the power systems. This paper describes the state estimator modified to support the processing of synchronized phasor measurements. Synchronized phasor measurements are found to provide synchronism of measurement data and improve the nccuracy/redundancy of the results of running it are presented.

  • The hemispherical resonator gyroscope is a type of vibratory gyroscope, which can measure angle or angular rate, based on its operating mode. This paper deals with the case when the hemispherical resonator gyroscope is operated in angle measurement mode. In angle measurement mode, the resonator pattern angle precesses, with respect to the external rotation input, by the principle of the Coriolis effect, so that the external rotation can be estimated, by measuring the amount of precession angle. However, this pattern angle drifts, due to the manufacturing error of the resonator. Since the drift effect causes degradation of the angle estimation performance of the resonator, the corresponding drift compensation control should be performed, to enhance the estimation performance. In this paper, a mathematical model of the hemispherical resonator gyro is first introduced. By using the mathematical model, a nonlinear observer for imperfection parameter estimation, and the corresponding compensation controller are designed to operate hemispherical resonator gyros, as angle measurement sensors.

  • A new method of measuring residual stress in micromachined film is proposed. An estimation of residual stress is performed by using least squares fit with an appropriate deflection modeling. an exact value of residual stress is obtained without any of the ambiguities that exist in conventional buckling method, and a good approximation is also obtained by using a few data points. Therefore, the test structures area could be greatly decreased by using this method. The measurement can be done more easily and simply without any actuation or any specific measuring equipment. The structure and fabrication processes described in this paper are simple and widely used in surface micromachining. In addition, in-situ measurement is available by using the proposed method when the test structure and the measurement structure are fabricated on a wafer simultaneously.

  • When one attempts to construct a hologram. one finds that there are many sources of measurement errors. These errors are even amplified if one predicts the pressures close to the sources. The pressure estimation errors depend on the following parameters: the measurement spacing on the hologram plane. the prediction spacing on the prediction plane. and the distance between the hologram and the prediction plane. This raper analyzes quantitatively the errors when these are distributed irregularly on the hologram plane The sensor mismatch and inaccurate measurement location. position mismatch. are mainly addressed. In these cases. one can assume that the measurement is a sample of many measurement events. The bias and random error are derived theoretically. Then the relationship between the random error amplification ratio and the parameters mentioned above is examined quantitatively in terms of energy.

In this paper, a new approach, "Dynamic-Mass measurement control System of Acceleration and Displacement(DMS-AD) sensing", is presented to improve some of drowbacks in conventional scales. The system, consisted of acceleration and displace- ment sensors, spring scale and microcomputer, is based on full utilization of dynamic mass measurement of acceleration and displacement via microcomputer-assisted real time monitoring. • The design of a measurement system to perform Harmonic State Estimation(HSE) is a very complex problem. In particular, the number of available harmonic analysis measurement instruments is always limited. Therefore, a systematic procedure is needed to design the optimal placement of measurement points. This paper presents an optimal algorithm of HSE which is based on an optimal placement of measurement points using PSO. This PSO-HSE has been applied to power system for the validation of an optimal algorithm of HSE. The study results have indicated an economical and effective method for optimal placement of measurement points using PSO in the HSE.
