  • This study focuses on the amplitude dependency of damping of tall structures by the random decrement technique (RDT). Many researchers have adopted RDT to establish the amplitude dependency of damping ratios in super-tall buildings under strong wind loads. In this study, a series of simulated examples were analyzed to examine the reliability of this method. Results show that damping ratios increase as vibration amplitudes increase in several cases; however, the damping ratios in the simulated signals were preset as constants. This finding reveals that this method and the derived amplitude-dependent damping ratio characteristics are unreliable. Moreover, this method would obviously yield misleading results if the simulated signals contain Gaussian white noise. Full-scale measurements on a super-tall building were conducted during four typhoons, and the recorded data were analyzed to observe the amplitude dependency of damping ratio. Relatively wide scatter is observed in the resulting damping ratios, and the damping ratios do not appear to have an obvious nonlinear relationship with vibration amplitude. Numerical simulation and field measurement results indicate that the widely-used method for establishing the amplitude-dependent damping characteristics of super-tall buildings and the conclusions derived from it might be questionable at the least. More field-measured data must be collected under strong wind loads, and the damping characteristics of super-tall buildings should be investigated further.

  • In recent, the LTE(Long-Term Evolution) mobile communication system has been commercialized and a variety of service is being provided. Comparing to the old wireless access systems such as 3G mobile communications, in particular, the LTE system supports a service requiring a high transmission rate by providing broadband wireless access. In order to understand the possibility of successful support of a multimedia service such as IPTV(Internet Protocol Television) through the LTE system, it is necessary to understand the mechanism that decides the transmission rate supported by the LTE system. This paper, therefore, discusses on the relationship between a number of metrics such as CQI and BLER that affects the transmission rate with the measurement results from the field tests.

  • Beacon enables one to measure distance indoors based on low-power Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technology, while GPS (Global Positioning System) only can be used outdoors. In measuring indoor distance using Beacon, RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) is considered as the one of the key factors, however, it is influenced by various environmental factors so that it causes the huge gap between the estimated distance and the real. In order to handle this issue, we propose the adaptive ANN (Artificial Neural Network) based approach to measuring the exact distance using Beacon. First, we has carried out the preprocessing of the RSSI signals by applying the extended Kalman filter and the signal stabilization filter into decreasing the noise. Then, we suggest the multi-layered ANNs, each of which layer is learned by specific training data sets. The results showed an average error of 0.67m, a precision of 0.78.

  • Purpose: This study aimed at improving the indoor environment of the office building by measuring the indoor environment and conducting a survey. Method: The measurement was conducted from January 13 to March 16 in 2012, targeting 44 sites in same office building located in Seoul, South Korea. The lists of measurement such as dry-blub temperature, relative humidity, formaldehyde (HCHO), asbestos, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particle pollution (PM10) were measured. In addition, illuminance which belongs to light environment and noise in sound[acoustical] environment were measured respectively. Result: The buildings showed overall pleasant conditions. In terms of the thermal, air, sound, and visual environment, each measurements were satisfied with the requirements in standard, within pleasant ranges, except several sites. However, the survey results were revealed that the office workers were mostly dissatisfied with their indoor environment. Given that the measured values were mostly within standards, the results of survey might have resulted from a compensation mentality biased toward the subjects in psychological terms.

  • Recently, as many functional blocks are integrated on a small area the high speed integrated circuits emerge as a critical electromagnetic interferer which causes mal-function of adjacent circuitries and lowers the sensitivity of the wireless receivers. Therefore, it is necessary to devise an precise analyzing tool to pinpoint the major electromagnetic noise contributor among the internal circuit blocks of high speed IC's. This paper presents the design, fabrication, and measurement results of the high resolution magnetic field probe which can measure the current density on the IC surface. In order to achieve the high resolution, the magnetic field probe is fabricated using 3-metal semiconductor process so that its thickness is reduced by 10% than that of conventional works. Through the magnetostatic analysis and EM simulation, spatial resolution and sensitivity to the nonmagnetic field components are analyzed. Experimentally, it is found that the fabricated probe can measure the current density on the IC surface with $210{\mu}m$-spatial-resolution.

  • We develope a high repetition rate, short distance, optical range finder for surface roughness measurements of large structures, such as a highway road, etc. For range measurement based on a triangulation principle, we use a light emitting diode and an one dimensional Position sensitive photodetector for a light source and an angle detector of the reflected light at the object, respectively. The range finder has automatic power control and electrical background noise rejection capabilities which enable it to overcome variations of an object reflectance and to eliminate time-varying, as well as constant, background light noises. Our experimental results show less than ${\pm}1.5mm$ of measurement errors regardless of an object reflectance, for $22{\sim}38cm$ object ranges which are determined by considering the installation of the range finder and the depth of surface roughness.

  • In this paper, we present a performance analysis and design and implementation results of a 2.4 GHz bio-radar system that can detect human heartbeat and respiration signals. In order to design a 2.4 GHz bio-radar system qualitatively, we investigate the electromagnetic properties of human tissues and calculate the target SNR of demodulation output with respect to distance. The target SNR is defined by the 90 % success ratio for detecting heartbeat signal. With this target SNR value, the performance and link budget of the bio-radar system is simulated using MATLAB. Using this link budget results, the direct conversion receiver is designed and Implemented in 4 layer printed circuit board(PCB). With output power of 0 dBm and 5 Hz bandwidth, 80 % success ratio of 50 cm is measured. Measurement results show a good agreement with simulation results.

  • In this paper, a new tube-radius-measuring algorithm has been proposed for effectively measuring the radii of small tubes under severe noise conditions that can also perform well when metal scraps that make it difficult to measure the radius correctly are inside the tube hole. In the algorithm, we adopt a fuzzy searching method that searches for the center of the inner circle by using fuzzy parameters for distance and orientation from the initial search point. The proposed algorithm has been implemented and tested on both synthetic and real-world tube images, and the performance is compared to existing circle-detection algorithms, such as the Hough transform and RANSAC methods, to prove the accuracy and effectiveness of the algorithm. From this comparison, it is concluded that the proposed algorithm has excellent performance in terms of measurement accuracy and computation time.
