Computation of Complex Stiffness of Inflated Diaphragm in Pneumatic Springs by Using FE Codes (상용 유한요소해석 프로그램을 이용한 공압 스프링 내 다이아프램의 복소강성 산출)

  • An accurate mathematical model for complex stiffness of the pneumatic spring would be necessary for an efficient design of a pneumatic spring used in vibration isolation tables for precision instruments such as optical devices or nano-scale equipments. A diaphragm, often employed for prevention of air leakage, plays a significant role of complex stiffness element as well as the pressurized air itself Therefore, effects of the diaphragm need to be included in the dynamic model for a more faithful description of dynamic behavior of pneumatic spring. But the complex stiffness of diaphragm is difficult to predict In an analytical way, since it is a rubber membrane of complicated shape in itself. Moreover, the diaphragm should be expandable in response to pressurization inside a chamber, which makes direct measurement of complex stiffness of diaphragm extremely difficult. In our earlier research, the complex stiffness of diaphragm was indirectly measured, which was just to eliminate the theoretical stiffness of pressurized air from the measured complex stiffness of the pneumatic spring. In order to reflect complex stiffness of inflated diaphragm on the total stiffness at the initial design or design improvement stage, however. it is required to be able to predict beforehand. In this paper, how to predict the complex stiffness of inflated rubber diaphragm by commercial FE codes (e.g. ABAQUS) will be discussed and the results will be compared with the indirectly measured values.

  • The coupling phenomenon between stress and magnetic induction, known as magnetostriction, has been successfully applied to generate and measure elastic waves. Most applications of this phenomenon thus far, however, are rather limited to cylindrical ferromagnetic waveguides. The main objective of this work is to develop a new patch-type, orientation-adjustable magnetostrictive transducer that is applicable for non-cylindrical, non-ferromagnetic waveguides. The existing patch-type transducer consisting of a ferromagnetic patch and a racetrack coil is useful to generate elastic waves only in one specific direction once the patch is bonded to a test specimen. However, the proposed transducer can transmit and receive elastic waves in any direction only with one patch at a given location. The proposed magnetostrictive transducer consists of a circular nickel patch, a figure-of-eight coil, and a couple of bias permanent magnets. Because of the unique configuration of the transducer, the propagating direction of the generated waves can be freely controlled since the set of bias magnets and the coil is not bonded to the magnetostrictive patch. In this work, the characteristics of the proposed transducer were investigated experimentally.

Study on 3D Sound Source Visualization Using Frequency Domain Beamforming Method (주파수영역 빔형성 기법을 이용한 3차원 소음원 가시화)

  • An approach to 3D visualization of multiple sound sources has been developed with the application of a moving array technique. Frequency domain beamforming algorithm is used to generate a beam power map and the sound source is modeled as a point source. When a conventional delay and sum beamformer is used, it is considered that 2D distribution of sensors leads to have deficiency in spatial resolution along a measurement distance. The goal of moving an array in this study is to form 3D array aperture surrounding multiple sound sources so that the improved spatial resolution in a virtual space can be expected. Numerical simulation was made to examine source localization capabilities of various shapes of array. The 3D beam power maps of hemispherical and spherical distribution are found to have very sharp resolution. For experiments, several sound sources were placed in the middle of defined virtual space and arc-shaped line array was rotated around the sources. It is observed that spherical array shows the most accurate determination of multiple sources' positions.

The Study of Correlation between Objective Human Response and Subjective Discomfort Evaluation of Idle Vibration on Passenger Vehicle (승용차량 정차시 발생하는 진동에 대한 객관적 인체반응특성과 주관적 불편함평가의 상관성에 관한 연구)

  • Thirteen taxi drivers as the subject in the experiment were exposed to vertical vibration which is controlled on a rigid seat reflecting vibration on passenger vehicle. They were employed not only to get human response of objective measurement but also to make subjective evaluation of the vibration. The subjective evaluation was estimated using the absolute discomfort threshold of the controlled vibration, which was achieved with the three-down one-up method that is widely used in the field of psychophysics. As the result, apparent mass and apparent eccentric mass as objective human response tend to gradually decrease when frequency of the vibration increases. The absolute discomfort threshold was increased in case of increasing the frequency. Concludingly, the subjective discomfort evaluation is highly correlated with the objective human responses at the range of idle vibration on passenger vehicle.

  • This paper presents the dynamic response and the vibration characteristics for a rail-track supported by discrete springs and dampers. Recently, automatic conveyer system, rail-track, rack-master system demand the soundproof facilities and vibration suppression measures in order to satisfy the strict environmental standards. The equations of motions of the dynamic characteristics for a vibration suppression rail-track under a traveling mass were derived by Galerkin's mode summation method considering gravity, centrifugal force, Coriolis force, inertia force of the moving mass, transverse inertia of the rail-track. Also, numerical results were calculated by Runge-Kutta integration method. In order to investigate vibration characteristics and dynamic responses, modal testing and measurement of the responses of the rail-track were performed. Through the experiment and numerical simulations, numerical results have a good agreement with experimental ones.

Effects of Generator Retrofit on Torsional Natural Frequency of Turbine-generator Train and Study on Measurement Results (발전기교체로 인한 축계의 비틀림 고유주파수 영향 및 측정결과 고찰)

  • Recently, turbine-generators have been replaced for the integrity reinforcement and the efficiency improvement, also, the blade's failures of LP turbines due to torsional vibration have been reported. Excessive torsional vibrations can result in failures of components. The severity of torsional oscillations and stress depends upon the separation margin between the excitation frequencies and torsional natural frequencies. Therefore it is needed to measure the torsional natural frequencies after replacement of the components to conform the separation margin of torsional natural frequencies. In this study torsional vibration measurements were performed after LP turbine and generator replacement and the torsional natural frequencies for the turbine-generator train were calculated to evaluate the effects of generator replacement on torsional natural frequencies of turbine-generator train. It is expected that these evaluation results will be used effectively to identify the root causes of torsional vibration problems.

  • A 40-channel superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) system was constructed for measuring neuromagnetic fields. Main features of the system are the use of double relaxation oscillation SQUIDs (DROSs), and planar gradiometers measuring magnetic field components tangential to the head surface. The DROSs with high flux-to-voltage transfers enabled direct readout of the SQUID output by room-temperature dc preamplifiers and simple flux-locked loop circuits could be used for SQUID operation. The pickup coil is an integrated first-order planar gradiometer with a baseline of 40 mm. Average noise level of the 40 channels is around 1.2 $fT/cm/{\surd}Hz$ at 100 Hz, corresponding to a field noise of 5 $fT/{\surd}Hz$, operated inside a magnetically shielded room. The SQUID insert was designed to have low thermal load, minimizing the loss of liquid helium. The constructed system was applied to measure auditory-evoked neuromagnetic fields.

  • The sensor signal validation and failure detection system must be able to detect, isolate, and identify sensor degradation as well as provide a reconstruction of the measurements. In this study, this is accomplished by combining the neural network, the Generalized Consistency Checking(GCC), and the Sequential Probability Ratio Test(SPRT) method in a decision estimator module. The GCC method is a computationally efficient system for redundant sensors, while the SPRT provides the ability to make decisions based on the degradation history of a sensor. The methodology is also extended to the detection of noise degradation. The acceptability of the proposed method is demonstration by using the simulation data in safety injection accident of nuclear power plants. The results show that the signal validation and sensor failure detection system is able to detect and isolate a bias failure and noise type failures under transient conditions. And also, the system is able to provide the validated signal by reconstructing the measurement signals in the failure conditions considered.

  • Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) is a technique for identification of modal parameters by measurement of only the system's response. On many lightweight structures, such as load-speaker cones and disk drive read/write heads, is impossible or impractical to measure the input forces. Another characteristic of lightweight structure is their sensitivity to mass loading from sensors. The Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometry(SLDV) allows response measurements to be taken without mass loading. One disadvantage of OMA testing compared to tradition input output modal testing is the OMA mode shapes are un-scaled. This means that the mode shape obtained from an OMA test can not used for analytical structural modification studies. However, the un-scaled mode shapes from an OMA test can be used to update a Finite Element Model (FEM). The updated FEM can then be used to analytically predict the effect of structural modifications. This paper will present the results of an OMA test performed on a simple plate and motor in operating conditions. The un-scaled mode shapes from this test will be used to update a FEM model of the system. The updated FEM model will be then be used to predict the effect of attaching a mass to the plate. The shapes predicted by the FEM for the modified system will be compared to a second OMA test on the modified system
