  • Alkali aggregate reaction affects numerous civil engineering structures and causes irreversible expansion and cracking. This work aims at developing model to predict the potential expansion of concrete containing alkali-reactive aggregates. First, the paper presents the experimental results concerning the influence of particle size of an alkali-reactive aggregate on mortar expansion studied at 0.15-0.80 mm, 1.25-2.50 mm and 2.5-5.0 mm size fractions and gives data necessary for model development. Results show that no expansion was measured on the mortars using small particles (0.15-0.80 mm) while the particles (1.25-2.50 mm) gave the largest expansions. Finally, model is proposed to simulate the experimental results by studying correlations between the measured expansions and the size of aggregates and to calculate the thickness of the porous zone necessary to take again all the volume of the gel created by this chemical reaction.

  • It is known in some literatures that the B value is not equal to unity in saturated soil when effective stress is given, in which the B Value is the ratio of measured excess pore water pressure and isometric loading pressure. In this study the B value was measured on various effective stresses and on various incremental loading stresses in various grain size of specimens with saturated sand. The test results showed that the B value was affected largely by grain size of sand in specimen and the amount of effective stress. There was the semi-logarithmic relationship between B value and effective stress, and also there was the linear relationship between the gradient of the former semi-logarithmic relationship and grain size of specimen.

  • In-situ particle monitors(ISPMs) are widely used for monitoring contaminant particles in vacuum-based semiconductor manufacturing equipment. In the present research, the performance of a Particle Measuring Systems(PMS) Vaculaz-2 ISPM at subatmospheric pressures has been studied. We created uniform upstream conditions of particle concentration and measured the detection efficiency, the lower detection limit, and the size response of the ISPM using uniform sized methylene blue aerosol particles. The effect of particle size, particle velocity, particle concentration, and system pressure on the detection efficiency was examined. Results show that the detection efficiency of the ISPM decreases with decreasing chamber pressure, and with increasing mass flow rate. The lower detection limit of the ISPM, determined at 50 % of the measured maximum detection efficiency, was found to be about $0.15{\sim}0.2{\mu}m$, which is similar to the minimum detectable size of $0.17{\mu}$ given by the manufacturer.

  • High internal phase emulsions are highly concentrated emulsion systems consisting of a large volume of dispersed phase above 0.74. The rheological properties of high internal phase water-in-oil emulsions were measured conducting steady shear, oscillatory shear and creep/recovery experiments. It was found that the yield stress is inversely proportional to the drop size with the exponent of values between 1 and 2. Since the oil phase contains monomeric species, microcellular foams can easily be prepared from high internal phase emulsions. In this study, the microcellular foams combining a couple of thickeners into the conventional formulation of styrene and water system were investigated to understand the effect of viscosity ratio on cell size. Cell size variation on thickener concentration could be explained by a dimensional analysis between the capillary number and the viscosity ratio. Compression properties of foam are important end use properties in many practical applications. Crush strength and Young's modulus of microcellular foams polymerized from high internal phase emulsions were measured and compared from compression tests. Of the foams tested in this study, the foam prepared from the organoclay having reactive group as an oil phase thickener showed outstanding compression properties.

  • Aerosol mass size distributions were measured at Kosan, Cheju Island in April 1998 and their compositions were analyzed. Microorifice Uniform Deposit Impactor(MOUDI) was used to collect aerosols. Sulfate and ammonium ions were predominatly present at fine mode of the aerosols while nitrate, chloride, and metal ions were mostly at coarse mode. Based on the size distribution of nitrate, it is suggested that most nitrate were from gas to particle conversion on coarse particles. Non-sea salt(nss) fraction of sulfate accounted for more than 90% of total sulfate mass concentration. In general, ion concentrations in this study are lower than those measured at the same site from the previous studies. Ion balance and chloride ion levels indicates that there had been anthropogenic chloride emission sources near to the site during the measurements.

  • To study the body trunk form which is essential to clothing constructions, necessary body sizes were measured indirect1y from 216 unmarried women from 19 to 24 years old by a photographic network method. The results are obtained as follow; 1) In this study of body type measurements, the four factors of bust, abdomen, column and hip size have been divided into four-stage intervals and given the body type codes 1, 2, 3 and 4, with 1 designating the size difference of the factor with the minimum size difference of the factor with the maximum size difference from waist size. These body type codes can be easily, linguistically interpreted. In this study, among $4^4=256$ possible body types, 54 types appeared frequently. These 54 types are integrated into 6 groups of types by clustering analysis. Representative types of each group are types 3333 and 2333 in group 1, 2233, 1233 and 1332 in group 2, 2222, 1222 and 1223 in group 3, 2223 in group 4, 2323 and 2322 in group 5, and 3323, 3223 and 3322 in group 6. In the types of groups 1, 2, and 3, the change is mainly in bust size, and in the types of group 4. is single type. In the types of group 5 the change is mainly in hip size, and in the types by groups 6 the change is mainly in abdomen size and hip size. 2) The analysis by measuring the four elements of body trunk in reference to waist size is scientific and grading of similar styles is possible in clothing construction. 3) Assuming that the human body is oval, using the calculating method, the size of girth, which cannot be measured by the indirect measuring method, is obtained approximate to actual size, with an error of ${\pm}2.8cm$.

  • Korean clothings are admired for their beauty and traditional value. On the other hand, many of Korean women complain of chest restriction. Korean skirts may give high garment pressure to the wearers because the Korean skirt-band do not resolve physical tensions in size or in stretch. This paper aims at the identification of the garment pressure caused by the Korean skirt-band and the cardiopulmonary change caused by garment pressure. The Korean skirt-band were made in 3 kinds of size, and 21 women were selected for wearing test. The garment pressure was measured in front, side, and back parts of the body. The measured cardiopulmonary parameters were vital capacity, respiratory rate, heart rate, and blood pressure. The results were as follows: 1. The smaller the size of the Korean skirt-band, the greater the garment pressure. The pressure during inspiration was significantly greater than the pressure during expiration. 2. The pressure in side part was the greatest of the three measurements and the pressure in back part was the smallest. 3. The small size of the Korean skirt-band revealed low vital capcity and great respiratory rate. 4. As the small size grement was dressed, the respiratory rate and the heart rate during walking and rest after walking were significantly high. 5. Subjects felt uncomfortable when they wore small sized garment.

  • The subject of variable step size maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms has been addressed in the literature. However, most of the addressed algorithms tune the variable step size according to two variables: the photovoltaic (PV) array voltage ($V_{PV}$) and the PV array current ($I_{PV}$). Therefore, both the PV array current and voltage have to be measured. Recently, maximum power point trackers that arc based on a single variable ($I_{PV}$ or $V_{PV}$) have received a great deal of attention due to their simplicity and ease of implementation, when compared to other tracking techniques. In this paper, two methods have been proposed to design a variable step size MPPT algorithm using only a single current sensor for stand-alone battery storage PV systems. These methods utilize only the relationship between the PV array measured current and the converter duty cycle (D) to automatically adapt the step change in the duty cycle to reach the maximum power point (MPP) of the PV array. Detailed analyses and flowcharts of the proposed methods are included. Moreover, a comparison has been made between the proposed methods to investigate their performance in the transient and steady states. Finally, experimental results with field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are presented to verify the performance of the proposed methods.

  • A size-reduced high frequency mixer designed by adopting artificial dielectric substrate is described in this work. The artificial dielectric substrate is composed by stacking the lower substrate in which a lot of metalized via-holes exist, and upper substrate on which microstrip lines are realized. The effective dielectric constant increases due to the inserted lots of via-holes, and this may be applied to size-reduction of high frequency circuits. In this work, in order to present an application example of size-reduction for active high frequency circuits using the artificial dielectric substrate, a 8GHz single gate mixer is miniaturized and measured. It is described that the basic circuit elements for mixers such as hybrid, low pass filter, and matching networks can be replaced by the artificial dielectric substrate for size-reduction. The final mixer has 55% of size compared to the normal one. The measured average conversion gain is around 3dB which is almost similar result as the normal circuit.

  • We investigated the resistance change behavior of SABiT (Samsung Advanced Bump interconnection Technology) technology-applied PCB (Printed Circuit Board) with the various bump sizes and fabrication conditions. Many testing samples with different bump size, prepreg thickness, number of print on the formation of Ag paste bump, were made. The resistance of Ag paste bump itself was calculated from the Ag paste resistivity and bump size, measured by using 4-point probe method and FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope), respectively. The contact resistance between Ag paste bump and conducting Cu line were obtained by subtracting the Cu line and bump resistances from the measured total resistance. It was found that the contact resistance drastically changed with the variation of Ag paste bump size and the contact resistance had the largest influence on total resistance. We found that the bump size and contact resistance obeyed the power law relationship. The resistance of a circuit in PCB can be estimated from this kind of relationship as the bump size and fabrication technique vary.
