  • Using the hematofluiorometer normal values of the erythrocyte zinc protoporphyrin(ZPP) and ZPP/Heme ratio were measured in 312 males and 163 females aged from 6 month to 73 years old and compared with those of anemic persons. The mean$\pm$SD values of ZPP of normal Koreans were 28.5$\pm$6.4($\mu\textrm{g}$/dl) in males and 3.18$\pm$7.7 in females. the mean$\pm$SD of ZPP/Heme ratio were 49.5$\pm$12.3($\mu$mol/mol heme) in males and 62.0$\pm$15.8 in females. The difference in the mean ZPP and ZPP/Heme ratio values between male and female subjects were statistically signficant(p<0.0001) In male subjects the mean ZPP and ZPP/Heme ratio of the age groups less than 15 years old were higher than adult groups and the difference between age groups was significant(p<0.005 and p<0.0001 respecti-vely) The normal upper limit of the mean$\pm$2SD in normal male and female subjects were 41.3 and 47.2 for ZPP and 74.1 and 93.6 for ZPP/Heme ratio respectively. The mean values of ZPP and ZPP/Heme ratio measured in the anemic persons were higher than those of normal subjects and did not show any significant difference by the sex and age groups except in 6-14 years male groups. The test specificity(positivity) analyzed in the anemic persons by the cut-off values calculated from the normal data were 50.6% for ZPP and 73.0% for ZPP/Heme ratio. The correlation analysis between blood hemoglobin and erythrocyte ZPP or ZPP/Heme ratio in the total 801 normal and anemic subjects showed that there are very high logarithmic correlation between the hemoglobin levels and ZPP/Heme ratio (r=-0.8339) and high correla-tion between the hemoglobin levels and ZPP concentrations(r=-0.6372) These results suggested that the measurement of the erythrocyte ZPP and ZPP/Heme ratio with the hematofluorometer can be a usuful screening method for iron deficiency anermin because they provide a reliable immediate results with a small amount of sample and are relatively simple and inexpensive.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the T2 value of the articular cartilage of the glenohumeral joint in rotator cuff disease displayed on 3.0T MRI and to apply it in clinical practice. Materials and Methods: This study involved sixty-two patients who underwent shoulder MRI containing T2 mapping. The mean T2 value was measured by placing a free hand ROI over the glenoid or humeral cartilage from the bone-cartilage interface to the articular surface on three consecutive, oblique coronal images. The drawn ROI was subsequently divided into superior and inferior segments. The assessed mean T2 values of the articular cartilage of the glenohumeral joint were compared and evaluated based on the degree of rotator cuff tear, the degree of fatty atrophy of the rotator cuff, and the acromiohumeral distance. Results: ICC values between two readers indicated moderate or good reproducibility. The mean T2 value for the articular cartilage of the glenoid and humeral head cartilage failed to show any significant difference based on the degree of rotator cuff tear. However, the mean T2 values of articular cartilage, based on fatty atrophy, tended to be higher in fatty atrophy 3 or fatty atrophy 4 groups while some subregions displayed significantly higher mean T2 values. There was no correlation between the acromiohumeral distance and the mean T2 values of the articular cartilage of the glenoid and humeral head. Conclusion: T2 mapping of the glenohumeral joint failed to show any significant difference in quantitative analysis of the degenerative change of the articular cartilage based on the degree of rotator cuff tear. However, it also offers quantitative information on the degenerative change of cartilage of the glenohumeral joint in patients with rotator cuff tear and severe fatty atrophy of the rotator cuff.

  • The present study was undertaken to clarify the changes in hematological values of Korean indigenous goats according to age. Blood samples were collected from 16 goats (5 females and 11 males) from birth up to the age of 6 weeks and the levels of various hematological values were analyzed. The body weight was increased from 2.54 kg at birth to 6.41 kg at 6 weeks age. The erythrocytes (RBC) counts and hemoglobin (Hb) values of goats were decreased at 2 weeks after birth, and increased gradually from 4 weeks after birth. The hematocrit (Ht) values were decreased until 4 weeks after birth, and increased at 6 weeks after birth. The mean cell volume (MCV) and mean cell hemoglobin (MCH) were decreased until 6 weeks after birth. The mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) was increased slightly from 2 weeks after birth. The red cell distribution width (RDW) was increased significantly at 2 weeks after birth, and decreased from 4 weeks after birth. The platelet (PLT) counts were increased significantly from 2 weeks after birth. The mean platelet volume (MPV) was decreased at 2 weeks after birth, and increased gradually from 4 weeks after birth. The total white blood cell (WBC) counts and the mean absolute numbers of neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte and eosinophil were increased from 2 weeks after birth. In conclusion, the data obtained from this study may be valuable as a standard for interpreting results of hematological analyses in Korean indigenous goats.

  • This paper presents a method for detecting scene changes in video sequences, in which the $chi^{2}$-test is modified by imposing weights according to NTSC standard. To automatically determine threshold values for scene change detection, the proposed method utilizes the frame differences that are obtained by the weighted $chi^{2}$-test. In the first step, the mean and the standard deviation of the difference values are calculated, and then, we subtract the mean difference value from each difference value. In the next step, the same process is performed on the remained difference values, mean-subtracted frame differences, until the stopping criterion is satisfied. Finally, the threshold value for scene change detection is determined by the proposed automatic threshold estimation algorithm. The proposed method is tested on various video sources and, in the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method is reliably estimates the thresholds and detects scene changes.

  • In this series, we investigate the calculation of mean values of derivatives of Dirichlet L-functions in function fields using the analogue of the approximate functional equation and the Riemann Hypothesis for curves over finite fields. The present paper generalizes the results obtained in the first paper. For µ ≥ 1 an integer, we compute the mean value of the µ-th derivative of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions over the rational function field. We obtain the full polynomial in the asymptotic formulae for these mean values where we can see the arithmetic dependence of the lower order terms that appears in the asymptotic expansion.

  • Biplots are the multivariate analogue of scatter plots. They are useful for giving a graphical description of the data matrix, for detecting patterns and for displaying results found by more formal methods of analysis. Nevertheless, when some values are missing in data matrix, most biplots are not directly applicable. In particular, we are interested in the shape variability of principal component biplot which is the most popular in biplots with missing values. For this, we estimate the missing data using the EM algorithm and mean imputation according to missing rates. Even though we estimate missing values of biplot of incomplete data, we have different shapes of biplots according to the imputation methods and missing rates. Therefore we propose a RMS(root mean square) for measuring and comparing the shape variability between the original biplots and the estimated biplots.

The mean values of noise level by area in 3 cities showed a decrease in the order of the downtown area, commercial area, industrial area and semi-industrial area, park area and residential area. 16. The comparison of the noise levels by area in 3 cities indicated that the highest level was detected in the downtown area in Seoul and Taegu and in the industrial area in Pusan. 17. The daily average concentration of sulfur dioxides ($SO_2$) in 3 cities was 0.081 ppm, ranging from 0.004 to 0.196. 18. The daily average concentrations of sulfur dioxides by city were 0.092 ppm in Seoul, 0.089 in Pusan and 0.062 in Taegu in that order. 19. The weekly average concentration of carbon monoxides(CO) was 27.59 ppm. 20. The daily average concentrations of carbon monoxides by city were 33.37 ppm. in Seoul, 25.76 in Pusan and 23.65 in Taegu in that order. 21. The concentration of $SO_2$ and CO reaches a peak from 6 p. m. to 8 p. m. 22. About 3 times probably the daily average concentration of CO could be detected in the downtown area probably due to heavy traffic emission in comparison with that in the industial area. 23. As for daily variation of the concentration of $SO_2$ and CO it was found that the concentration maintains relatively higher value during weekdays in the industrial area and on the first part of the week in the downtown area.
