  • The least-mean fourth (LMF) algorithm is well known for its fast convergence and low steady-state error especially in non-Gaussian noise environments. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the least mean square (LMS) algorithms with variable step size. It is because the variable step-size LMS algorithms have shown to outperform the conventional fixed step-size LMS in the various situations. In this paper, a variable step-size LMF algorithm is proposed, which adopts an algebraic optimal step size as a variable step size. It is expected that the proposed algorithm also outperforms the conventional fixed step-size LMF. The superiority of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by the simulations in the time invariant and time variant channels.

  • Simultaneous bilateral bleb resection was done through bilateral transaxillary thoracotomy in 10 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax during the period from May 1991 to Novemver 1992 in whom bilateral bulla or bleb was detected with using simple chest X-ray and chest CT scanning. To compare the effectiveness of bilateral transaxillary thoracotomy, we investigated 10 unilateral transaxillary thoracotomy patients with spontaneous pneumothorax and two clinical reports from other institutes which dealt the results of bilateral bleb or bulla resection through median sternotomy also. In bilateral transaxillary thoracotomy group, mean operation time was 115 minute, mean intraoperative bleeding was 329 cc, mean postoperative hospital stay was 7.5 days. Postoperative ABGA[Arterial Blood Gas Analysis] was in normal range and postoperative recovery rates of FVC[Forced Vital Capacity], FEV1[Forced Expiratory Volume at 1 second], TV[Tidal Volume] were 84.3%, 93.4%, 88.7%,respectively. In median sternotomy group, mean operation time was 129 minute, mean intraoperative bleeding was 490 cc, mean postoperative hospital stay was 12.4 days. Postoperative ABGA was in normal range and postoperative recovery rates of FVC, FEV1 were 97.3%, 97.4%, respectively. In unilateral transaxillary thoracotomy group, postoperative ABGA was in normal range also and postoperative recovery rates of FVC, FEV1, TV were 91.6%, 99.0%, 96.0%,respectively. In conclusion, simultaneous bilateral bleb resection through bilateral transaxillary thoracotomy should be considered in pneumothorax patients with bilateral bleb or bulla because of cost-effectiveness[reducing hospital days] and better cosmetic result without any impairment in recovery of respiratory function.

  • Performance analysis of NTT/BT protocol is investigated, which is a GFC (Generic Flow Control) ptotocol in ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode ) network and is based on cyclic reset mechanism. THe mean cell delay time is proposed as a performance measure of NTT/BT protocol. The mean cell delay time is defined as the duration from the instant the cell arrives at the transmission buffer until the cell is fully transmitted. The process of cell transmission can be described as a single server queueing modle with two dependent services. By utilizing this model, mean cell delay time is obtained and sensitivity of the factors such as window size and reset period is also analysed.

  • Simultaneous measurements of velocity and OH distribution were made using particle image velocimetry(PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence(PLIF) of OH radical in turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames with coaxial air. The OH radical was used as an approximate indicator of chemical reaction zone. The OH layer was correlated well with the stoichiometric velocity, $U_s$, instantaneously and on average. In addition, high strain-rate regions almost coincide with the OH distribution. The residence time in flame surface, calculated from the root-mean-square value of the radial velocity, is proportional to $(x/d_F)^{0.7}$. It is found that the mean value of principal strain rate on the OH layer can be scaled with $(x/d_F)^{-0.7}$ and therefore, the product of the residence time and the mean strain rate remains constant over all axial positions.

  • In this paper we consider the M/M/1 Queue with mean inter arrival time $\theta$. We derive a sample path estimator for the derivative of steady state mean system time with respect to $\theta$. We also show that the derived sample path estimate can be expressed as a sum of the IPA estimate and the other effect. We have a similar result for the derivative of limiting probability $P_k$ with respect to $\theta$.

  • Degree distribution can provide basic information for structural characteristics and internal relationship in social network. It is a critical procedure for social network topology analysis. In this paper, based on the mean-field theory, we study a special type of social network with exponential distribution of time intervals. First of all, in order to improve the accuracy of analysis, we propose a spreading coefficient algorithm based on intimate relationship, which determines the number of the joined members through the intimacy among members. Then, simulation show that the degree distribution of follows the power-law distribution and has small-world characteristics. Finally, we compare the performance of our algorithm with the existing algorithms, and find that our algorithm improves the accuracy of degree distribution as well as reducing the time complexity significantly, which can complete 29.04% higher precision and 40.94% lower implementation time.

  • Counting statistics modified by introducing two dead times in series under a Poisson input distribution are discussed. A previous study examined the two cases of series combinations of nonextended-extended (NE-E) and extended-extended (EE) dead times. The present study investigated the remaining two cases of extended-nonextended (E-NE) and nonextended-nonextended (NE-NE) dead times. For the three time origins of the counting processes - ordinary, equilibrium, and shifted processes - a set of formulae was newly developed from a general formulation and presented for the event time interval densities, total densities, and exact mean and variance of the counts in a given counting duration. The asymptotic expressions for the mean and variance of the counts, which are most convenient for applications, were fully listed. The equilibrium mean count rates distorted by the three dead times in series were newly derived from the information obtained in these studies. An application of the derived formulae is briefly discussed.

  • In this paper, perfodrmance of matched-filter (MF) acquisition scheme is analyzed for a direct-sequence/code-division-multiple-access (DS/CDMA) system in a microcellular environment. Mean acquistion time is used as a performance measure. It is demonstrated that acquisition performance is enhanced using interference suppression filter in a Rician fading channel. To apply for multiuser environments, multiple access interference is considered in the performance analysis. From the numerical results, it is shown that mean acquistion time decreases with the increasing SNR/chip, and acquisition performance is improved as the number of taps of interference suppression filter. It is also shown that mean acquisition time increases with the number of users in the system, and acquistion performance is degraded as the icrease of narrowband interference bandwidth. The analysis in this paper can be applied to a DS/CDMA overlay environment.
