Most publications on friction stir welding describe phenomena or results with given process parameters like feed rate, rotation speed, angle and depth of penetration. But without a complete documentation of tool design, the results under the same process parameters are completely different. For this purpose, the Institute of Cutting and Joining Manufacturing Processes (tff), University of Kassel investigated the influence of tool roughness on the friction stir welding process. Therefore a defined surface finish was produced by turning and die sinking. As basis of comparison the constant parameters were rotation speed, feed rate, tilt angle and a heel plunge depth. Sound butt-welds were produced in aluminium alloy 6082 (AlMgSi1) with 1.5 mm sheet thickness with a turned reference tool with a surface of $Ra=0.575{\mu}m$ in position controlled mode. The surfaces are manufactured from a very fine to a very rough structure, classified by the VDI-classes with differences in the arithmetical mean roughness. It can be demonstrated with the help of temperature measures, that less heat is generated at the surfaces of the shoulder and the pin by the higher roughness due to lower active friction contact surface. This can also be seen in the resulting wormhole defects.
The glass-ceramic based on LAS($Li_{2}O-Al_{2}O_3-SiO_{2}$) system was observed using SEM(Scanning Electric Microscopy) and AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy) and it was expected to get a correlation between the crystal size and the surface roughness through the result. At heat treatment conditions (the nucleation: $740\~800^{\circ}C$, the crystal growth: $900\~1150^{\circ}C$), the crystal size was increased from 72 to 450 nm so that the mean of surface roughness was also risen from 0.8 to 6.3 nm. Based on the results, the surface roughness of glass-ceramic is controlled by the factors, crystal size, crystallines, and the condition of heat treatment.
Objectives: To examine the surface topography of intact WaveOne (WO; Dentsply Sirona Endodontics) and WaveOne Gold (WOG; Dentsply Sirona Endodontics) nickel-titanium rotary files and to evaluate the presence of alterations to the surface topography after root canal preparations of severely curved root canals in molar teeth. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight severely curved canals of extracted molar teeth were divided into 2 groups (n = 24/each group). In group 1, the canals were prepared using WO and in group 2, the canals were prepared using WOG files. After the preparation of 3 root canals, instruments were subjected to atomic force microscopy analysis. Average roughness and root mean square values were chosen to investigate the surface features of endodontic files. The data was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tamhane's tests at 5% significant level. Results: The surface roughness values of WO and WOG files significantly changed after use in root canals (p < 0.05). The used WOG files exhibited higher surface roughness change when compared with the used WO files (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Using WO and WOG Primary files in 3 root canals affected the surface topography of the files. After being used in root canals, the WOG files showed a higher level of surface porosity value than the WO files.

A spectral analysis and numerical simulation are employed to assess the effects of the stylus tip radius on measuring surface profiles. Original profiles with fractal spectral densities are generated and then are numerically traced with circular tipped stylus. Instead of their spectral densities, the accumulative power spectrums of traced profiles are analyzed. It is shown that the minimum wavelength of traced profile relates directly to the radius r of the stylus tip and the root-mean-square (rms) roughness ${\sigma}_o$ of original profile. From this accumulation spectral analysis, a formula is developed to estimate the minimum wavelength of traced profile. By using the concept of the minimum wavelength, an appropriate stylus tip radius can be chosen for the given rms roughness ${\sigma}_o$ of the profile.
In the numerical weather model, surface properties can be defined by various parameters such as terrain height, landuse, surface albedo, soil moisture, surface emissivity, roughness length and so on. And these parameters need to be improved in the Seoul metropolitan area that established high-rise and complex buildings by urbanization at a recent time. The surface roughness length map is developed from digital elevation model (DEM) and it is implemented to the high-resolution numerical weather (WISE-WRF) model. Simulated results from WISE-WRF model are analyzed the relationship between meteorological variables to changes in the surface roughness length. Friction speed and wind speed are improved with various surface roughness in urban, these variables affected to temperature and relative humidity and hence the surface roughness length will affect to the precipitation and Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) height. When surface variables by the WISE-WRF model are validated with Automatic Weather System (AWS) observations, NEW experiment is able to simulate more accurate than ORG experiment in temperature and wind speed. Especially, wind speed is overestimated over $2.5m\;s^{-1}$ on some AWS stations in Seoul and surrounding area but it improved with positive correlation and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) below $2.5m\;s^{-1}$ in whole area. There are close relationship between surface roughness length and wind speed, and the change of surface variables lead to the change of location and duration of precipitation. As a result, the accuracy of WISE-WRF model is improved with the new surface roughness length retrieved from DEM, and its surface roughness length is important role in the high-resolution WISE-WRF model. By the way, the result in this study need various validation from retrieved the surface roughness length to numerical weather model simulations with observation data.

Electron beam irradiation is widely used as a type of surface modification technology to advance surface properties. In this study, the effect of electron beam irradiation on properties, such as surface hardness, wear resistance, roughness, and critical load of Titanium Aluminium nitride (TiAlN) films was investigated. TiAlN films were deposited on the SKD-61 substrate by using cathode arc ion plating. After deposition, the films were bombarded with intense electron beam for 10 minutes. The surface hardness was increased up to 4520 HV at electron irradiation energy of 1500 eV. In addition, surface root mean square (RMS) roughness of the films irradiated at 1500 eV shows the lowest roughness of 484 nm in this study.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of surface modifications on the bonding characteristics and cytotoxicity of specific titanium porcelain bonded to milling titanium and cast titanium. Milling titanium and cast titanium samples were divided into 8 test groups. These groups are as follow: i) sandblasted with particles of different size of $220{\mu}m\;and\;50{\mu}m$, ii) different sequences of sandblasting treatment and etching treatment, iii) etched with different etching solutions, and iv) preheated or not. The surface characteristics of specimens were characterized by the test of mean roughness of surface and SEM. The bond strength of titanium-ceramic systems was measured by using three-point bending test and SEM. The results show that the mean roughness of surface of sample sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide increased and bond strength were higher than sample sandblasted with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. The mean roughness of surface decreased, but the bond strength increased when the samples sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide were preheated. The sample sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide after oxidized with occupational corrosive agent I (50% NaOH, 10% $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$) and II (35% $HNO_3$, 5% HF) showed higher bond strength than sample oxidized with 30% $HNO_3$ after sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. Group NaCuNF220SP (milling Ti: 35.3985 MPa, casting Ti: 37.2306 MPa) which was treated with occupational corrosive agent I (50% NaOH, 10% $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$) and II (35% $HNO_3$, 5% HF), followed by sandblasting with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide and preheating at $750^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour showed the highest bond strength and significant differences (P<0.05). The method for modifying surface of titanium showed excellent stability of cells.
PURPOSE. The present study investigated the influences of various gypsum materials on the precision of fit of CAD/CAM-fabricated prostheses and analyzed their correlation with surface roughness. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The master model of the mandibular right first molar was replicated, and four experimental groups based on two types of Type IV stone (GC Fujirock EP, Die keen) and two types of scannable stone (Aesthetic-Basegold, Everest Rock) were created to include a total of 40 specimens, 10 in each group. The surface roughness of the working models for the respective experimental groups was measured. Once the zirconia cores had been fabricated, the marginal and internal fits were measured with a digital microscope using the silicone replica technique. The mean and standard deviation of the respective points of measurement were computed and analyzed through the one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test. The correlation between surface roughness and the precision of fit of the zirconia core was analyzed using the Pearson correlation analysis (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. The zirconia cores fabricated from the scannable stone working models exhibited a superior precision of fit as compared to those fabricated from the Type IV stone working models. The correlation analysis results showed a clear positive correlation between surface roughness and the precision of fit of zirconia cores in all of the experimental groups (P<.05). CONCLUSION. The results confirmed that the surface roughness of dental working models has a decisive influence on the precision of fit of zirconia cores.
A wind tunnel test of a scaled-down model and field measurement were effective methods for elucidating the aerodynamic behavior of a chimney under a wind load. Therefore, the relationship between the results of the wind tunnel test and the field measurement had to be determined. Accordingly, the set-up and testing method in the wind tunnel had to be modified from the field measurement to simulate the real behavior of a chimney under the wind flow with a larger Reynolds number. It enabled the results of the wind tunnel tests to be correlated with the field measurement. The model surface roughness and different turbulence intensity flows were added to the test. The simulated results of the wind tunnel test agreed with the full-scale measurements in the mean surface pressure distribution behavior.
This study surveys the fabric surface properties such as mean value of the friction coefficient(MIU), mean deviation of the friction coefficient(MMD) and mean deviation of surface roughness(SMD) due to warp and weft tension differences using KES-FB system. For this purpose, fabric is designed as 5 harness Satin weave using 75d/36f warp and 100d/192f weft polyester filaments, and is woven by OmegaR rapier loom by Textec Co.Ltd and Picanol-GTXR rapier loom by Picanol Co.Ltd respectively. These grey fabrics are processed on the same dyeing and finishing processes. The fabric surface properties according to the weaving looms are analysed with warp and weft weaving tensions. And also surveyed the difference of fabric surface properties according to the fabric positions such as center and each edge of fabrics for the sensitive garment.
