The stress distributions on a human mandible for 18 load cases under two different boundary conditions (mouth open and closed), using the three dimensional finite element modeling were studied. Also, the expected fracture loads for each load cases were calculated by using the Von-Mises yield criterion. The model of a mandible with all teeth was composed of 2402 hexahedron elements and 3698 nodes. CAD techniques were used to analyze the 3-dimensional results. The conclusions of this study were as follows: 1. In the mouth open state, the maximum stress occured at the condyle neck; when the lateral load was exerted, the maximum stress occured at the load side condyle. 2. In the mouth closed state, when the loads were exerted on the mandibular body and chin, the maximum stress occured at the loaded area, and when the loads were exerted on the angle and ramus, the maximum stress occured at the condyle neck. 3. The expected fracture loads in each load case were calculated using the Von-Mises yield criterion, and it was confirmed that the mandible in the mouth open state was more easily fractured than that in the mouth closed state, and the expected fracture loads are lesser in the cases that load direction is parallel at mandibular plane than 45°. 4. The magnitudes of the expected fracture loads increased in the order of angle, ramus, body and chin in case of the mouth closed state, while chin, body, angle and ramus in case of the mouth open state. 5. The Von-Mises stress concentration regions analyzed by F.E.M. corresponded well with the results of clinical studies.
This paper presents a numerical study on the heat of hydration of reinforced concrete with different steel ratio. And this study intends to determine the effect of the steel on the variation of temperatures during hydration. In order to do this, the thermal analyses of the pier-foundation models were carried out using the finite element analysis program, ADINA. As the steel rate increased, the maximum temperature and the internal-external temperature difference decreased.
An analysis of the turbo-blower shaft attached to fuel cell using 3-D FEA (Finite Element Analysis) is proposed by Lanczos algorithm. The modal analysis was peformed in order to investigate natural frequencies for 10 times. It is found that the first mode of natural frequency is 111.243 and the maximum displacement is 0.16mm Consequently, It is found that the dynamic design of turbo-blower shows a good responses transiently.
This paper describes a new method of identifcation of backlash nonlinear systems by use of M-sequence correlation method. In this method, we can obtain not only Volterra kernels of up to 3rd order of the nonlinear system, but also the width of the backlash element from observing the crosscorrelation between the input and the output. Here strictly speaking, a multi-valued nonlinear system such as backlash element can not be expressed by Volterra kernel representation mathematically. But in practice, we encounter many cases where it is difficult to treat them mathematically but they can be controlled from experience. So we here dare to suppose that backlash nonlinear system can be approximated by Volterra kernel representation. Simulations are carried out on a nonlinear system consisting of linear part plus backlash element. And Volterra kernels are measured. The output calculated from the observed Volterra kernels is in good agreement wi th the actual output. And we show that we can obtain the width of backlash element, which is one of the most important parameters, by observing the maximum value of crosscorrelation function between the input M-sequence and the output.
This paper focuses on geometrically non-linear static analysis of a simply supported beam made of hyperelastic material subjected to a non-follower transversal uniformly distributed load. As it is known, the line of action of follower forces is affected by the deformation of the elastic system on which they act and therefore such forces are non-conservative. The material of the beam is assumed as isotropic and hyperelastic. Two types of simply supported beams are considered which have the following boundary conditions: 1) There is a pin at left end and a roller at right end of the beam (pinned-rolled beam). 2) Both ends of the beam are supported by pins (pinned-pinned beam). In this study, finite element model of the beam is constructed by using total Lagrangian finite element model of two dimensional continuum for a twelve-node quadratic element. The considered highly non-linear problem is solved by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. In order to use the solution procedures of Newton-Raphson type, there is need to linearized equilibrium equations, which can be achieved through the linearization of the principle of virtual work in its continuum form. In the study, the effect of the large deflections and rotations on the displacements and the normal stress and the shear stress distributions through the thickness of the beam is investigated in detail. It is known that in the failure analysis, the most important quantities are the principal normal stresses and the maximum shear stress. Therefore these stresses are investigated in detail. The convergence studies are performed for various numbers of finite elements. The effects of the geometric non-linearity and pinned-pinned and pinned-rolled support conditions on the displacements and on the stresses are investigated. By using a twelve-node quadratic element, the free boundary conditions are satisfied and very good stress diagrams are obtained. Also, some of the results of the total Lagrangian finite element model of two dimensional continuum for a twelve-node quadratic element are compared with the results of SAP2000 packet program. Numerical results show that geometrical nonlinearity plays very important role in the static responses of the beam.
The paper aims at analyzing the stress distribution around an underground opening that is subjected to non-symmetrical surface loading with emphasis on opening shapes with sharp corners and the stress concentrations developed at these locations. The analysis is performed utilizing the BIE method coupled with the Neumann's series. In order to implement this approach, the special recurrent relations for half plane were proven and the modified Shanks transform was incorporated to accelerate the series convergence. To demonstrate the capability of the developed approach, a horseshoe shape opening with sharp corners was investigated and the location and magnitude of the maximum hoop stress was calculated. The dependence of the maximum hoop stress location on the parameters of the surface loading (degree of asymmetry, size of loaded area) and of the opening (the opening height) was studied. It was found that the absolute magnitude of the maximum hoop stress (for all possible surface loading locations) is developed at the roof points when the opening height/width ratio is relatively large or when the pressure loading area is relatively narrow (compared to the roof arch radius), and contrarily, when the opening height/width ratio is relatively small or when the surface pressure is applied to a relatively wide area, the absolute magnitude of the maximum hoop stress is developed at the bottom sharp corner points.
Purpose : This study was to assess the loading distributing characteristics of implant systems with internal connection or external connection under vertical and inclined loading using finite element analysis. Materials and methods : Two finite element models were designed according to type of internal connection or external connection The crown for mandibular first molar was made using cemented abutment. Each three-dimensional finite element model was created with the physical properties of the implant and surrounding bone This study simulated loads of 200N at the central fossa in a vertical direction (loading condition A), 200N at the centric cusp tip in a 15$^{\circ}$ inward inclined direction (loading condition B), or 200N at the centric cusp tip in a 30$^{\circ}$ outward inclined direction (loading condition C) respectively. Von Mises stresses were recorded and compared in the supporting bone, fixture, abutment and abutment screw. Results : 1. In comparison with the whole stress or the model 1 and model 2, the stress pattern was shown through th contact of the abutment and the implant fixture in the model 1, while the stress pattern was shown through the abutment screw mainly in the model 2. 2. Without regard to the loading condition, greater stress was taken at the cortical bone, and lower stress was taken at the cancellous bone. The stress taken at the cortical bone was greater at the model 1 than at the model 2, but the stress taken at the cortical bone was much less than the stress taken at the abutment, the implant fixture, and the abutment screw in case of both model 1 and model 2. 3. Without regard to the loading condition, the stress pattern of the abutment was greater at the model 1 than at the model 2. 4. In comparison with the stress distribution of model 1 and model 2, the maximum stress was taken at the abutment in the model 1. while the maximum stress was taken at the abutment screw in the model 2. 5. The magnitude of the maximum stress taken at the supporting bone, the implant fixture, the abutment, and the abutment screw was greater in the order of loading condition A, B and C. Conclusion : The stress distribution pattern of the internal connection system was mostly distributed widely to the lower part along the inner surface of the implant fixture contacting the abutment core through its contact portion because of the intimate contact of the abutment and the implant fixture and so the less stress was taken at the abutment screw, while the abutment screw can be the weakest portion clinically because the greater stress was taken at the abutment screw in case of the external connection system, and therefore the further clinical study about this problem is needed.
The objective of the present work is to estimate the strength and failure characteristics of symmetric thin square laminates under negative shear load. Two progressive failure analyses, one using the Hashin criterion and the other using a Tensor polynomial criterion, are used in conjunction with the finite element method. First-order shear-deformation theory along with geometric nonlinearity in the von Karman sense has been incorporated in the finite element modeling. Failure loads, associated maximum transverse displacements, locations and modes of failure including the onset of delamination are discussed in detail; these are found to be quite different from those for the positive sheer load reported in Part I of this study (Singh et al. 1998).
The composite plate to upgrade structures and, in particular, to extend the lives of reinforced concrete beams has wide applications. One of the main aspects of the bonded strengthening technology is the stress analysis of the reinforced structure. In particular, reliable evaluation of the adhesive shear stress and of the stress in the composite plates is mandatory in order to predict the beam's failure load. In this paper, a finite element analysis is presented to calculate the stresses in the reinforced beam under mechanical loads. The numerical results was compared with the analytical approach, and a parametric study was carried out to show how the maximum stresses have been influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite beam.
Mechanical systems with rubber parts have been used widely in industry fields. The evaluation of the physical characteristics of rubber is important in rubber application. Rubber material is useful to machine component for excellent shock absorbing characteristics. The impact characteristics of rubber were examined by experimental and finite element method. The impact test was conducted with a free-drop type impact tester. The ABAQUS/Explicit was used for finite element analysis. The effects of thickness and diameter of the cylindrical rubber structures were investigated. The impact absorbing ratio of the rubber material was studied order to compare the peak reaction force of the specimen which only contained aluminum against the specimen with the inserted rubber part.
