  • As a biofuel source, direct photosynthetic/metabolic biofuel cells (DPBFC) use cyanobacteria whose photosynthesis and metabolization reactions can convert light energy to electricity, In our previous work, we fabricated a prototype micro-DPBFC that could generate a peak current density of $36{\mu}A/cm^{2}$ and a maximum power density of $270nW/cm^{2}$. In this study, we improve on the previous results by using carbon micro electromechanical systems (C-MEMS), formed from the pyrolysis of patterned photoresist, to fabricate carbon electrodes of an arbitrary shape and controlled porosity to increase the surface area. With these new C-MEMS electrodes, the maximum power density of the micro-DPBFC was $516nW/cm^{2}$, a performance twice as good as the results of our previous work.

  • In this study, to determine characteristics of compaction and the soil water characteristic curve(SWCC) in decomposed granitic soils, compaction tests and SWCC tests were carried out for samples having various contents of coefficient of uniform($c_u$), By compacting their samples with standard Proctor density test, the effects of binder contents on maximum dry density and optimum moisture content were investigated and compared. Samples compacted with the maximum dry density and the optimum moisture content were tested by means of the SWCC, to determine their SWCC parameters, such as Brooks & Corey(${\lambda}$, ${\Psi}_b$), Van Genuchten (${\alpha}$, n, m), Fredlund & Xing(a, n, m).

  • This paper is proposed a selection method of the major design dimension which constrain the maximum acceleration capability and minimum power loss of surface-mounted brushless do motor with NdFeB permanent magnet for servo drives. Expressions are derived from the air-gap flux density and the linear current density around the stator periphery and design dimensions. The linear current density is limited by the need to avoid demagnetization. In this paper, We compute the optimum design dimensions of 2KW BLDC motor with maximum acceleration capability and minimum power loss by using genetic algorithm.

  • Fall-arrest systems(maximum arrest force and allowable free-fall) have been widely applied to provide a safe stop during fall incidents for various industrial activities. Fabric structure affects on the mechanical properties of shock energy absorber. The object of this study is to perform the basic research for the evaluation of the capacity of fall arrest energy absorber in relation to the different interlace yarn density. In this work, pack style energy absorber was prepared by weaving 10 types(Interlace yarn density used high tenacity PET 1000D : 60, 59, 58, 57, 56, 55, 54, 53, 52, 51). The paper presents the results of theoretical investigations of the performance of adjustable absorber during fall arrest. Dynamic load tests based on the EU fall protection equipment standard(CE : EN355:2002) were conducted. Results showed that the maximum arrest force by dynamic load test of energy absorber was satisfied with global standard(below 6,000N). Also, Maximum allowable free-fall of energy absorber showed below 1.75m.

  • We show that the Maximum Penalized Likelihood Estimate uniquely exits in a Sobolve spece which consists of bivariate density functions. The Maximum Penalized Likehood Estimate is represented as the square of the sum of the solutions of the Modified Helmholtz's equation on the compact subset of R$^{2}$.

  • In this work, we have investigated the printability such as print through and str-off of domestic newspapers. Nine kinds of domestic newspapers Hansol, Deahan, Sinho, Hanla and Sepung, were tested by IGT printability tester, and studied using maximum ink requirement method. We obtained the datum of printability parameters such as maximum ink requirment of paper Ymax, printing density D, print through, set-off and gloss. The results of this test showed that a choice of the fillers on the newspaper had an effect on print through, set-off and density of newspapers in the maximum ink transfer point.

  • Since structural systems may fail in any one of several failure modes, computation of system reliability is always difficult. A method using numerical quadrature for computing structural system reliability with either one or more than one failure mode is presented in this paper. Statistically correlated safety margin equations are transformed into a group of uncorrelated variables and the joint density function of these uncorrelated variables can be generated by using the Maximum Entropy Method. Structural system reliability is then obtained by integrating the joint density function with the transformed safety domain enclosed within a set of linear equations. The Gaussian numerical integration method is introduced in order to improve computational accuracy. This method can be used to evaluate structural system reliability for Gaussian or non-Gaussian variables with either linear or nonlinear safety boundaries. It is also valid for implicit safety margins such as computer programs. Both the theory and the examples show that this method is simple in concept and easy to implement.

  • In order to investigate the effect of delayed compaction on the strength of the lime soil mixtures, labroatory test with two kind of soils was performed at four levels of lime content, at five levels of water content, and at six love's of delayed times. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Maximum dry density and optimum moisture content decreased with increase of the delayed times. The decreasing rate of those values at the earlier delayed time were large, and those values showed almost constant after about four hours of delayed time. 2. According to the increase of the delayed time, the decreasing rate of maximum dry density and optimum moisture content was large ia S-2 sampl, but was a little in S-1 sample. 3. Unconfined compressive strength of lime soil mixtures decreased with the increase of the delayed time, and the decreasing rate of its strength increased with the increase of the lime content. 4. Water content corresponding to the maximum strength was a little higher than the optimum moisture content along the increase of lime content and delayed time but its value was large in fine soil.

  • The studied in this paper is a new algorithm for searching the maximum likelihood estimate(MLE) in which probability density function is not explicitly expressed. Newton-Raphson's root-finding routine and a nonlinear numerical optimization algorithm with constraint (so-called feasible sequential quadratic programming) are used. This algorithm is applied to the Wakeby distribution which is importantly used in hydrology and water resource research for analysis of extreme rainfall. The performance comparison between maximum likelihood estimates and method of L-moment estimates (L-ME) is studied by Monte-carlo simulation. The recommended methods are L-ME for up to 300 observations and MLE for over the sample size, respectively. Methods for speeding up the algorithm and for computing variances of estimates are discussed.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of Korean traditional plain weave excavated from Sang-go period to Joseon Dynasty. To do this, this study classified the Korean traditional plain weave into fiber types(cotton, hemp & ramie, plain weaved silk), analyzed and compared the thickness, twist type of yarns and density by times. First, in characteristics of cotton, the average and maximum density of Joseon Dynasty were higher than those of Goryeo, twist type was mainly s-twist and the density of warp was higher than that of weft. Second, the maximum density of hemp & ramie was found in era of Three Kingdoms of Korea. In common characteristics of hemp & ramie, twist type was mainly s-twist(sometimes non-twist) to the Three Kingdoms of Korea and was changed into non-twist from the Goryeo. The density of warp was higher than that of weft in common. Generally, the average density of ramie was higher than that of hemp. Third, in the characteristics of plain weaved silk, twist type was mainly non-twist(sometimes s and z-twist) from Sang-go period to Joseon Dynasty. Warp-faced ribbed tabby was excavated in Goryeo, the average density of warp-faced ribbed tabby was higher than that of other fiber types plain weave. Generally, in all fiber types, the density of warp was higher than that of weft.
