In this study, the optimal configuration of arch structure has been tested by a decomposition technique. The object of this study is to provide the method of optimizing the shapes of both two hinged and fixed arches. The problem of optimal configuration of arch structures includes the interaction formulas, the working stress, and the buckling stress constraints on the assumption that arch ribs can be approximated by a finite number of straight members. On the first level, buckling loads are calculated from the relation of the stiffness matrix and the geometric stiffness matrix by using Rayleigh-Ritz method, and the number of the structural analyses can be decreased by approximating member forces through sensitivity analysis using the design space approach. The objective function is formulated as the total weight of the structures, and the constraints are derived by including the working stress, the buckling stress, and the side limit. On the second level, the nodal point coordinates of the arch structures are used as design variables and the objective function has been taken as the weight function. By treating the nodal point coordinates as design variable, the problem of optimization can be reduced to unconstrained optimal design problem which is easy to solve. Numerical comparisons with results which are obtained from numerical tests for several arch structures with various shapes and constraints show that convergence rate is very fast regardless of constraint types and configuration of arch structures. And the optimal configuration or the arch structures obtained in this study is almost the identical one from other results. The total weight could be decreased by 17.7%-91.7% when an optimal configuration is accomplished.

Very stiff floor system in a residential-commercial building causes some problems in the numerical analysis procedure due to significant difference in stiffness with adjacent elements. Static analysis of structure with a stiff transfer-floor can be performed approximately in two steps for upper and lower parts for the structure. However, it is impossible to perform dynamic analysis in two steps with separate models. An efficient method for dynamic analysis of a structure with a right floor system is proposd in this study. The matrix condensation technique is employed to reduce the degree of freedom for upper and lower parts of the structure and a beam elements with rigid bodies at both ends are introduce to model the rigid floor system. Efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through analysis of several example structures.
This paper proposes a new technique to formulate the finite element model of a sandwich beam by using GHM (Golla-Hughes-McTavish) internal auxiliary coordinates to account for frequency dependence. Through the use of auxiliary coordinates, the equation of motion of undamped mass and stiffness matrix form is extended to encompass viscoelastic damping matrix. However, this methods all suffer from an increase in order of the final finite element model which is undesirable in many applications. Here we propose to combine the GHM method with model reduction techniques to remove the objection of increased model order.
The added viscoelastic dampers increase damping and stiffness of buildings and results in so called non-classical or non-proportional damping problem. In this system the eigenvectors of the undamped system may not diagonalize the damping matrix, and the system is generally analyzed by converting the equation of motion into a 2n first order state-space form. As this approach is complex and time-consuming compared to the classically damped problem, the system is often analyzed by neglecting the off-diagonal terms in the damping matrix. In this paper the theoretical background of the approximate approach is studied, and the vibration characteristics of a three-story shear building with a viscoelastic damper are investigated using the exact and approximate method. It is found that the approximate method may produce good result when the additional damping is small, but as the damping increases the error also increase.

Coupled transverse shaft vibrations have become the target of great concern in high powered ships such as container ships. Due to increasing ship's dimensions and high propulsive power, resonance frequencies of the propeller shaft system tend to decrease and can appear in some cases within the operating speed range of engine. In this connection, the coupled free transverse vibrations of shaft system in two planes are theoretically investigated. This shaft system carries a number of discs and is flexibly supported by a number of bearing stiffness are considered for the calculation. Transfer matrix method is applied to calculate the shaft responses in both planes. A digital computer program is developed to calculate the shaft responses of the coupled transverse vibrations in two planes. An experimental model shaft system is made. It is composed of a disc, shafts, ball bearings thrust bearings and flexible bearing supports. The shaft system is excited by an electrical magnet, and shaft vibration responses in two planes are measured with the strain gage system. From these measurements, the natural frequencies of the shaft system in both planes are found out. The developed program is also used to calculate the shaft vibration responses of experimental model shaft system. From the results of these calculations, the natural frequencies of shaft system in two planes are derived. Theoretical predictions of model shaft natural frequencies show good agreements with its esperimental measurements.
The main goal of this article is to develop the finite element formulation based on the nonlocal strain gradient and the refined higher-order deformation theory employing a new function f(z) to investigate the static bending and free vibration of functionally graded porous (FGP) nanobeams. The proposed model considers the simultaneous effects of two parameters: nonlocal and strain gradient coefficients. The nanobeam is made by FGP material that exists in un-even and logarithmic-uneven distribution. The governing equation of the nanobeam is established based on Hamilton's principle. The authors use a 2-node beam element, each node with 8 degrees of freedom (DOFs) approximated by the C1 and C2 continuous Hermit functions to obtain the elemental stiffness matrix and mass matrix. The accuracy of the proposed model is tested by comparison with the results of reputable published works. From here, the influences of the parameters: nonlocal elasticity, strain gradient, porosity, and boundary conditions are studied.

This study was intended to computerize the structural analysis of two-dimensional continuum by finite element method, and to provide a preparatory basis for more sophisticated and more generalized computer programs of this kind. A computer program, applicable to any shape of two-dimensional continuum, was formulated on the basis of 16-degree-of- freedom rectangular element. Various computational aspects pertaining to the implementation of finite element method were reviewed and settled in the course of programming. The validity of the program was checked through several case studies. To assess the accuracy and the convergence characteristics of the method, the results computed by the program were compared with solutions by other methods, namely the analytical Navier's method and the framework method. Through actual programming and analysis of the computed results, the following facts were recognized; 1) The stiffness matrix should necessarily be assembled in a condensed form in order to make it possible to discretize the continuum into practically adequate number of elements without using back-up storage. 2) For minimization of solution time, in-core solution of the equilibrium equation is essential. LDLT decomposition is recommended for stiffness matrices condensed by the compacted column storage scheme. 3) As for rectangular plates, the finite element method shows better performances both in the accuracy and in the rate of convergence than the framework method. As the number of elements increases, the error of the finite element method approaches around 1%. 4) Regardless of the structural shape, there is a uniform tendency in convergence characteristics dependent on the shape of element. Square elements show the best performance. 5) The accuracy of computation is independent of the interpolation function selected.
A method for weighing fruits without separating them from stem is proposed. The base of stem is fixed and a fruit or a cluster of fruits is forced to vibrate. The approximated vibration model is constructed by the use of Transfer Matrix Method. The natural frequency (w) in this model can be represented as a function of weight elements, and the length and stiffness of branch elements of stem. With this function, only w is possible to measure. However, several small weights whose weights are known are attached to weight elements in various combinations. From these equations, unknown parameters are determined so that the weight of each fruit can be obtained by a non-destructive method.

Computational procedures associated with finite element nonlinear analysis of plane frame structures were examined and new solution schemes were suggested. Element stiffness matrix was derived from the principle of virtual displacements. Geometric and material nonlinearities were considered in the formulation. Solution method was based upon the constant displacement length method in conjunction with the Newton-Raphson method. New solution schemes were introduced in determining the initial load increment and the sign of load increments and predicting the length of displacement increment to improve user convenience, efficiency and stability. Numerical experiments were performed for several typical problems and suggested schemes were found efficient and convenient for analyzing nonlinear frame structures.

In this research, a numerical algorithm has been developed, which can be applied to the large deformation and large displacement contact problems between two deformable bodies. The contact conditions expressed in terms of the rate of angle change have been proposed considering the change in geometric shape and rate of contact force. A set of linear simultaneous equations is constructed by adding the geometric shape change and contact conditions to the original stiffness matrix. A new method to determine time increment has been proposed based on Euler method, in which the condition to prevent the contact bodies from penetrating and overrunning each other has been taken into consideration. Practical application to contact problem is extrusion in which bodies are sliding along the contact boundary.
