A Study on Teaching Material for Enhancing Mathematical Reasoning and Connections - Figurate numbers, Pascal's triangle, Fibonacci sequence - (수학적 추론과 연결성의 교수.학습을 위한 소재 연구 -도형수, 파스칼 삼각형, 피보나치 수열을 중심으로-)

  • In this paper, we listed and reviewed some properties on polygonal numbers, pyramidal numbers and Pascal's triangle, and Fibonacci sequence. We discussed that the properties of gnomonic numbers, polygonal numbers and pyramidal numbers are explained integratively by introducing the generalized k-dimensional pyramidal numbers. And we also discussed that the properties of those numbers and relationships among generalized k-dimensional pyramidal numbers, Pascal's triangle and Fibonacci sequence are suitable for teaching and learning of mathematical reasoning and connections.

Perspectives on the Use of Elementary Mathematics Textbooks by the Pre-service Teachers (예비교사의 초등수학교과서 활용에 대한 관점)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the elementary pre-service teachers' perspectives on the use of the elementary mathematics textbooks by observing mathematics classes at the schools and to present suggestions on the use of textbooks in the mathematics classes. For this study, let 54 pre-service elementary school teachers observe a total of 54 classes (1,299 students) in the first through sixth grades at 15 areas in Seoul city. With the observations of the mathematics classes, the researcher analyzed the pre-service elementary teachers' perspectives on the use of resources including mathematics textbooks in the elementary mathematics classes. As a result of the study, the pre-service teachers recognized that mathematics textbooks are the main material for mathematics classes, but they think that they need to reconstruct the contents of the textbooks for effective teaching and learning mathematics. In addition, various additional materials need to be used in order to help students learn mathematics more effectively, including by differentiated materials. Also, instruments used in the classes were mainly consisted of TV and PPT data. Pre-service teachers were not much satisfied with the contents of the elementary mathematics textbooks. However, they did not feel the need for development of digital textbooks. The researcher suggested a long term research on how to use study materials such as textbooks within the overall mechanism of teaching and learning processes. Also, practical teacher education programs that include applications of textbooks at schools are necessary in order to improve the quality of mathematics teaching and learning.

  • This study is aimed at developing the STEAM instruction materials for mathematics subject-based advanced technology and ICT teaching tools. In order to develop the STEAM materials, a PDI model in which the implementation and evaluation steps were simplified to Improvement was used. The developed STEAM materials were revised and supplemented by a group of experts. The subject of the STEAM class material developed in this study is 『Graph! The bridge that connects the past, present and future』 , 『You are the same but different!』 , 『Creating a virtual reality three-dimensional space together』 , 『And making interesting figures』 and 『Cover the roof of the turtle ship!』 . As a suggestion based on the results of this development study, various STEAM education materials should be developed and shared so that STEAM education can be performed in the elementary education field. And for the spread and settlement of STEAM education, the cultivation and expansion of STEAM education capabilities of on-site elementary school teachers or pre-service teachers will be an absolute prerequisite. And this suggests the need for a continuous and long-term approach to follow-up research on STEAM education.

Using Database of Calculus Problems in Teaching of University Level Mathematics

  • We have created in our university material management environment, which uses database created by using LATEX-files, and LATEX2HTML translator and PHP language. In this paper we will define how these LATEX-files are transformed into our database. In this paper, we present work which we have done for providing the material used in the teaching of calculus to students at Lappeenranta University of Technology. This procedure can be divided into three separate steps: 1) creation of the LATEX-files, 2) implementation of these LATEX-files in 3) conversion of the base LATEX-files to the HTML-files. So far, we have stored hundreds of exercises with hints and solutions on our web server in addition to some theory that we felt is necessary for the students. In this paper we will also discuss the benefits and future of our functioning Web-environment [1].

  • Geometry having long history of mathematics have important role for thinking power and creativity progress in middle school. The regular polygon included in plane geometry was mainly taught convex regular polygon in elementary school and middle school. In this study, we investigated the denotation's extension of regular polygon by mathematical basic knowledge included in school curriculum. For this research, first, school mathematical knowledge about regular polygon was analyzed. And then, basic direction of research was established for inquiry. Second, based on this analysis inductive inquiry activity was performed with research using geometry software(Cabri Geometry II). Through this study the development of enriched learning material and showing the direction of geometry research is expected.

A Case Study on Children's Informal Knowledge of the Fractional Multiplication (분수의 곱셈에서 비형식적 지식의 형식화 사례 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate children's informal knowledge of the fractional multiplication and to develop a teaching material connecting the informal and the formal knowledge. Six lessons of the pre-teaching material are developed based on literature reviews and administered to the 7 students of the 4th grade in an elementary school. It is shown in these teaching experiments that children's informal knowledge of the fractional multiplication are the direct modeling of using diagram, mathematical thought by informal language, and the representation with operational expression. Further, teaching and learning methods of formalizing children's informal knowledge are obtained as follows. First, the informal knowledge of the repeated sum of the same numbers might be used in (fractional number)$\times$((natural number) and the repeated sum could be expressed simply as in the multiplication of the natural numbers. Second, the semantic meaning of multiplication operator should be understood in (natural number)$\times$((fractional number). Third, the repartitioned units by multiplier have to be recognized as a new units in (unit fractional number)$\times$((unit fractional number). Fourth, the partitioned units should be reconceptualized and the case of disjoint between the denominator in multiplier and the numerator in multiplicand have to be formalized first in (proper fractional number)$\times$(proper fractional number). The above teaching and learning methods are melted in the teaching meterial which is made with corrections and revisions of the pre-teaching meterial.

An analysis on the level of cognitive demands of mathematical tasks set up by pre-service elementary school teachers (초등예비교사의 수학수업에서의 학습과제의 인지적 수준 분석)

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of mathematical tasks including the level of cognitive demands set up by pre-service elementary school teachers. 50 pre-service teachers in G university of education who participated in their 4 weeks teaching practicum were selected as subjects. They planned and implemented mathematics lesson with their lesson plans. Lesson plans, video of their lessons, transcript of video were gathered and analyzed the characteristics of mathematical tasks used in their lesson. Through the analysis, several conclusions were drawn as follow. First, 78% of the subjects modified tasks in mathematics textbooks. Since modification or construction of mathematical tasks gives good chance for constructing mathematical task knowledge for teaching, more chance should be given to pre-service teachers to construct new tasks or modify tasks in mathematics textbooks. Second, types of modification done by pre-service teachers were categorized as number change(15.6%), situation change(78.1%) and material change(6.3%). As Chapman(2013) emphasized the importance of MtKT, pre-service teachers must have more MtKT by understanding the characteristics of mathematical tasks. Third, the level of cognitive demands required by mathematical tasks were relatively low. 74% of mathematical tasks was lower cognitive demands and only 26% was higher cognitive demands. The level of cognitive demands of tasks in mathematics textbooks tended to be lowered by the directions given right after the tasks were given. In this respect, the structure of mathematics textbooks need to be changed.

A Study of Using Concrete Materials and Mathematical Communications in the Primary Mathematics Class - Focused on 2nd Grades in Primary school - (초등학교 수학 수업에서의 구체물 활용과 수학적 의사소통에 관한 연구 - 2학년 아동을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this thesis is to find the guiding direction of mathematical communication in lower grade students of elementary school and to present a new direction about the effect of using concrete material in communication. It is expected that mathematical communication increases when concrete material is used for the students of the lower grades, who are in concrete operational period. Therefore, this study ai s to investigate what characteristics there are in mathematical communication of second grade students and what effect concrete materials have on mathematical communication and learning. The analysis of the teaching record shows that the second grade students use alternative terms in the process of communication since they are not familiar with mathematical symbols or terms, which is a characteristic of communication in a mathematics class in which concrete material is used. In the process of teaming the students apply their living experiences to their teaming. Since a small number of students lead class, the interaction between students is also led by them. The direction of communication in a small group is not centered around solution of a problem, and most students show a more interest in finding answers than in the process of learning. The effect that concrete material has on communication plays an important role in promoting students' speaking activity; it allows students to identify and correct their errors more easily. It also makes students' activities more predictable, and it increases a small group activities through the medium of concrete material. However, it was also noticed that students' listening activities are not appropriately developed since they do not pay attention to a teacher who uses concrete material. The effects that concrete material has on mathematics class can be summarized as follows. Concrete material promotes students' participation in class by triggering their interest of learning of mathematics and helps them to understand the course of learning. It also helps the teaming and formation of concepts for children of low academic performance. And it makes a phased learning possible according to students' ability to use concrete material and to solve a problem. Based upon the results above mentioned, the use of concrete material is absolutely needed in mathematics classes of lower grade elementary school students since it increases communication and gives much influence on mathematics learning. Therefore, teachers need to develop teaching or learning method which can help increase communication, considering the characteristics of students' communication.

  • Considering the recent trend highlighting the importance of STEAM education, the purpose of this study is to develop scientific research activities and STEAM technology material using the smart device sensor. Drawing a picture on a map with GPS drawing application which contains elements such as IT, geographic information, sports and arts, we intent not just to install a smartphone application but also to get synergic effects and help with real cartography and geographic classes which are not experienced in the middle school curriculum, by using the functions of a smart device. Through the development of STEAM teaching material, we intended to provide a clear direction towards advancement by developing creative teaching data and teaching models which encourage students to improve their interest and creativity in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
