In this study, lessons on coordinate, percentage, and factorization in prime factors were taken with TI-73 calculator for 20 elementary school students in the 5th grade math gifted class in Pohang city. Through these lessons, the researcher examined with cases how using the calculator would influenced the lessons for the gifted students, and attempted to obtain implications on using calculators as learning tools in class. Activity sheets were made for this study and a 80-minute lesson was held three times for three weeks. In order to collect data, the class was recorded on videotape, the students were interviewed, and documents used in the class were collected. Then all the data were transcribed. Data analysis was completed through several readings of transcripts and main themes were derived by classifying, comparing, and contrasting coding. As a result of the study, the calculator played a role the tool as the mediation to communicate and the challenge their solvable tasks beyond the limitation of paper and pencil environments. But, in using the calculator, there was differences in gender between boys and girls. Above all, to enter commands into the calculator resulted in obstacles for learning process.
The purpose of this research was examining the effects of problem-based learning strategies(PBL) on problem solving skill conducted in Korea, using meta-analysis technique. This meta-analysis reviewed the results of 41 studies published between 1998 and 2017 in Korea. The overall weighted mean effect size value was .753 with .064 standard error which was calculated by random effects model. PBL strategies have been found to be more effective in mathematics course (d=.922), art course (d=.916), practical art course (d=.827), E-PBL (d=.791) and middle school level (d=.972). As PBL exhibit a substantial effect on students' problem solving skill, it is recommended that teachers should learn how to implement these strategies in their lesson. PBL is expected to contribute to the improvement of teaching methods as the learning environment changes during the 4th Industrial Revolution.

The purpose of this study was to discuss the example that developed geometry model textbook based on storytelling using real-life context. To achieve this purpose, we first elaborated the meaning of the textbook based on storytelling with real-life context, and then we discussed the outline of the story and the summary of each lesson. This study defined the storytelling textbook with real-life context as the textbook consisting of activities that explored and organized mathematical concepts by using real-life situations as materials of stories. The geometry textbook we developed employed two real-life materials, a map and a set square: we used a map for the coordinate geometry and a set square for the equation of a line. To attract students' interest, we introduced confrontation between a teacher and two students and a villain. We implemented experimentation with the textbook based on storytelling in order to verify its validity. The participants were 25 students that were enrolled in a high school in Seoul. Among them, 17 participants were surveyed. Students' answers from the survey questionnaire suggested that the geometry textbook we developed based on storytelling helped them learn mathematics and that the instruments such as a map and a set square helped them understand mathematical concepts. However, their opinion implied that the story of the textbook needed to be improved so that the story reflected more realistic contexts that were familiar with students.
The purpose of this study was to develop teaching-learning materials for informal activities geared toward teaching the nature and structure of proof, to make a case analysis of the application of the developed instructional materials to students in an elementary gifted class, to discuss the feasibility of proof education for gifted elementary students and to give some suggestions on that proof education. It's ultimately meant to help improve the proof abilities of elementary gifted students. After the characteristics of the eight selected gifted elementary students were analyzed, instructional materials of nine sessions were developed to let them learn about the nature and structure of proof by utilizing informal activities. And then they took a lesson two times by using the instructional materials, and how they responded to that education was checked. An analysis framework was produced to assess how they solved the given proof problems, and another analysis framework was made to evaluate their understanding of the structure and nature of proof. In order to see whether they showed any improvement in proof abilities, their proof abilities and proof attitude were tested after they took lessons. And then they were asked to write how they felt, and there appeared seven kinds of significant responses when their writings were analyzed. Their responses proved the possibility of proof education for gifted elementary students, and seven suggestions were given on that education.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mathematical instruction using GSP program on the symmetrical figures learning and self-directed learning attitude. According to the pretest result, the experiment group and the comparison group showed to be homogeneous groups. The experiment group has learned symmetrical figures for 9 hours using the GSP program and the comparison group has learned for 9 hours using the traditional method(paper and pen lesson). As the posttests, self-directed learning attitude test and symmetry figure understanding test were performed. The results obtained in this research are as follows; First, there was a significant difference in symmetry figure understanding test between the experiment group which learned through GSP program and the comparison group which learned through traditional method. Since there showed a very high achievement in the experiment group which learned using GSP, it can be inferred that GSP was very effective in the lessons of symmetrical movements. Second, there was a significant difference in self-directed learning attitude test between the experiment group and the comparison group. This seems to be because the length of the sides of the figures, size of the angles of the figures etc can be verified instantly and the students can correct by themselves and give feedbacks when they use GSP program. Students preferred drawing using the GSP over drawing using rulers and pencils, and they showed interest in the GSP program and they did not have burden in being wrong in their study and studied in various methods. And as they become familiar with the GSP program, they even studied other contents beyond the scope presented in the textbook.
This study is intended to reconsider the meaning of the education for gifted/talented children, the foundation object of science high school by examining the behavior characteristics between gifted students and talented students in open-end mathematical problem solving and to provide the basis for realization of 'meaningful teaming' tailored to the learner's level, the essential of school education. For the study, 8 students (4 gifted students and 4 talented students) were selected out of the 1 st grade students in science high school through the distinction procedure of 3 steps and the behavior characteristics between these two groups were analyzed according to the basis established through the literature survey. As the results of this study, the following were founded. (1) It must be recognized that the constituent members of science high school were not the same excellent group and divided into the two groups, gifted students who showed excellence in overall field of mathematical behavior characteristics and talented students who had excellence in learning ability of mathematics. (2) The behavior characteristics between gifted students and talented students, members of science high school is understood and a curriculum of science high school must include a lesson for improving the creativity as the educational institutions for gifted/talented students, unlike general high school. Based on these results, it is necessary to try to find a support plan that it reduces the case which gifted students are generalized with common talented students by the same curriculum and induces the meaningful loaming to learners, the essential of school education.
Even the teachers who agree with the necessity of effective mathematical discussions find it difficult to orchestrate such discussions in the actual lessons. This study focused on analyzing the difficulties 15 elementary school teachers faced in applying "the five practices for orchestrating productive mathematics discussions" to their lessons. Specifically, this study analyzed the process of planning, implementing, and reflecting on the lessons to which three or four teachers as a teacher community applied the five practices. The results of this study showed that the teachers experienced difficulties in selecting and presenting tasks tailored to the student levels and class environment, monitoring all students' solutions, and identifying the core mathematical ideas in student solutions. In addition, this study revealed practical and specific difficulties that had not been described in the previous studies, such as writing a lesson plan for effective use, simultaneously performing multiple teacher roles, and visually sharing student presentations. This study is expected to provide practical tips for elementary school teachers who are eager to promote effective mathematical discussions and to provoke professional discourse for teacher educators through specific examples.
This study conducted a student-centered inquiry lesson on the similarity of figures using AlgeoMath, with student learning aspects analyzed from a communication perspective. This approach aimed to inform pedagogical implications related to teaching geometric similarity. Through utilizing AlgeoMath, students were able to visually confirm that their chosen figures were similar, experiencing key mathematical concepts such as the ratio of similarity to the area of similar figures, and congruency and similarity conditions of triangles. In the lessons applying this concept, we categorized the features of similarity learning displayed by students, as seen in the communication aspects of their exploratory activities, into 'Understanding similarity ratios', 'Grasping conditions of similarity in triangles', and 'Comparing concepts of congruency and similarity'. Through exploratory activities based on AlgeoMath, students discussed the meaning and mathematical relationships of key concepts related to similarity, such as the ratio of similarity to the area of figures, and the meaning and conditions of congruence and similarity in triangles. By improving misconceptions about the similarity of figures, they were able to develop deeper mathematical understanding. This study revealed that in teaching and learning the geometric similarity using AlgeoMath, obtaining meaningful pedagogical outcome was not solely due to the features of the AlgeoMath environment, but also largely depended on the teacher's guidance and intervention that stimulated students' thinking.

'Learning with a robot' is now considered as one of the best candidates for STEAM education, which is recently growing its importance. Most of the 'learning with a robot' programs in elementary schools serve as afterschool classes. The students participating in the afterschool classes are mostly boys who are interested in science and robots. This paper mainly concerns that a robot can be helpful for improving students' interest in STEAM education. We divided the robot utilizable aspects into 5 areas with educational points of view; abstract concept understanding type, structure-oriented type, athletics-oriented type, intelligence-oriented type and value-orientated type. We extracted all robot utilizable subjects and units from elementary school curriculum, and developed lesson plans which can be applicable to regular classes. And we also verified them by applying into an elementary school for 5 months. As the result of the analysis, we can conclude that 'learning with a robot' can encourage students' interest in STEAM, and it is more effective for girls than boys. Finally, we discuss problems that teachers may face in using a robot for regular classes, and make suggestions about the use of a robot for STEAM education.
This study is a study in which four teachers from the same school who participated in a teacher learning community program at the school field developed interdisciplinary linkage and convergence data using Plato as a collaborative circle in ethics and mathematics subjects. In particular, this study aimed to develop practical and shareable lesson materials. The data development procedure was developed according to the following four procedures. 'Development of data development plan, data development, verification of development data, and development of final data that reflects the verification opinions' At this time, in the data development stage, a theme-based design model was applied and developed. In addition, the development data were verified by conducting CVR verification for field teachers to focus on the validity and class applicability, and the final data were presented after the development data being revised to reflect the verification results. This study not only introduced the developed data, but also described the procedure of the data development process and the trial and error and concerns of the developers in the process to provide information on the nature of basic research to other field researchers who attempt data development.
