  • The purpose of this research is to study the perception of mathematical creativity through gifted elementary mathematics students. The analysis on perception for mathematical creativity was done by testing 200 elementary school students in grades 4, 5, and 6 who are receiving gifted education in elementary mathematics gifted class operated by ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ City Dept of Education through the questionnaire that was developed based on Rhodes' 4P theory. This survey asked them to name what they think is the most creative from educational programs they have as far received. Then we analyzed the reason for the students' choice of the creativity program and interviewed the teachers who had conducted chosen program. As a result of analyzing the data, these students chose as mathematical creativity primarily creative problem solving, task commitment, and interest in mathematics in such order. This result is explained through analyzing the questionnaire that was based on Rhodes' 4P theory on areas of process, product and press. The perception of mathematical creativity by the gifted mathematical students not only helps to clarify the concept of mathematical creativity but also has implication for future development for gifted education program.

  • This study aims to analyze the mathematics curriculum in the gifted school and obtain the understanding of the current situation of education for the math-gifted children in Korea, therefore providing a point of view for the improvements. In order to attain these purposes, the study examined the subject competency for the mathematics set by regular mathematics curriculum system and 2015 revision curriculum, and extracted the analytical standards, based on which the education plan documents of each gifted school were analyzed. The conclusion that has been made based on the analysis results is as follows. First of all, the curriculum of mathematics in the gifted schools in korea is heavily concentrated on analytics and algebra. Secondly, in mathematics curriculum for gifted children in Korea puts the most emphasis on the problem solving competency. Third, geometry subject in the mathematics curriculum of Korean gifted schools deals with the given content only at the level of regular high school curriculum. Fourth, learning materials in most gifted schools are not the ones especially revised and adapted for the gifted students but usually the ones for the college students. Lastly, gifted schools are running the curriculum featured with curriculum compacting and advance learning focusing on acceleration.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal impact of the engagement of private tutoring on student achievement and the influence of the engagement of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring by applying hierarchical linear growth modeling technique on the KELS (Korean Education Longitudinal Study) data. For the analysis, we used KELS data including the score of Mathematics achievement from 2005 to 2007 in order to get useful variables like whether or not to engage private tutoring, weekly time and monthly cost of private tutoring, the experience of gifted education, gender, prior achievement of 6th grade, parents' monthly income, internal motivation and self-efficacy. The sample consisted of 4,435 7th graders from Korean middle schools who were included in the KELS and have the data available to a significant dataset having no missing values include. The result suggest that the private tutoring experience predicted students' high Mathematics achievement and the interaction between grade and private tutoring time and cost has negative impact on the mathematics achievement. In contrast, it was found that the experience of gifted education has negative impact on the growth of mathematics achievement, but positive impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement. In other words, the experience of gifted education shows affirmative impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement indirectly. On the basis of this results, we discussed deeply the effect of private tutoring on the Mathematics achievement and the influence and its meaning of the experience of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring.

  • We study on the mathematical disposition of mathematically gifted students in the middle school of Korea. For this purpose, we use a tool which is a psychological test about disposition of mathematics disliking. The tool was developed by Kim et al. (2001: Studies on Exploring Mathematics Disliking Factors and Devising Tools to Analyze Students' Disliking Trends about School Mathematics. J. Korea Soc. Math. Ed. Ser. A Mathematical Education. 40(2), 217-239) to analyze the mathematical disposition of underachievers and we investigate the characteristic of it.

  • Considering the expansion of gifted education and the quantitative increase the Gifted Science Academy, it is important to seek the appropriate methods of mathematics teaching for gifted high school students. In particular, to reflect current trends in mathematics education that the mathematical creativity is being presented as an important educational goal, Now is the time we need student-centered discussion model for regular mathematics classes, not teacher-centered instruction in the way of knowledge transfer. In this study, class model of preparation-based discussion was designed and applied to the regular mathematics classes for the Science Academy. Students participating in this research had a lot of pressure in preparation activities for discussion, but they said that the discussion compared to traditional lecture was mathematically meaningful experience. These findings suggest the implication that class model of preparation-based discussion can be meaningfully applied to the regular mathematics class.
