The Effects of the Horticulture-Mathematics Integration Program on Mathematical Attitude and Money Calculating Ability of Students with Intellectual Disabilities

  • Background and objective: The concept of 'money' in the numbers and operations domain is a fundamentally necessary domain of economic life. This study was conducted to examine the effects of a horticulture-mathematics integration program on mathematical attitude and money calculating ability of high school students with intellectual disabilities. Methods: We analyzed the changes in the mathematical attitude and money calculating ability of students with mild intellectual disabilities in S special school in the city of D, Republic of Korea, with 12 students in the control group and 12 students in the experimental group, from August 27 to October 29, 2019. Results: The results of the comparison showed no statistically significant changes in the three items of mathematical attitude for the control group, while the experimental group, which took part in the horticulture-mathematics integration program, showed statistically significant differences across all three items, such as self-concept about the subject (p = .003), attitude toward the subject (p = .004), and study habit related to the subject (p = .012). The horticulture-mathematics integration program, which was developed by integrating horticultural activities and the mathematics curriculum, used plants and horticultural activities to provide students with positive experiences in mathematics. These included the sense of closeness, curiosity, interest, attention, and enjoyment, leading to positive changes in mathematical attitude. In terms of money calculating ability, both the control group and experimental group showed statistical differences across the three items, but the experimental group showed greater degrees of increase, 15.0 or more, in the scores compared to the control group. Conclusion: These results suggest that utilizing horticultural materials as a part of purchase learning programs with elements of money calculation chapters in the mathematics curriculum could lead to the improvement of students' ability in money calculation. These positive changes are thought to be related to the high degrees of interest in horticulture among students, which led to active participation in the program and enabled the simple and repeated purchase activities in the program to generate positive changes in the money calculation ability of the students.

고등학생의 수학적 신념체계 및 중심신념요인 분석 (Analysing High School Students' Mathematical Belief System and Core Belief Factors)

  • 본 연구는 수학적 신념체계를 탐색하고, 고등학생의 수학적 신념체계의 중심신념요인 분석을 목적으로 한다. 개별적인 수학적 신념보다는 수학적 신념체계가 수학 학습 및 문제해결에 훨씬 많은 영향을 끼쳐서 내부적인 동력이 될 수 있고, 학생의 수학적 관점을 갖게 하기에 수학 교수 학습 및 문제해결에서 수학적 신념체계는 중요하다. 수학적 신념체계는 수학 교과, 수학 문제해결, 수학 교수 학습, 자아개념에 대한 신념이 밀접한 상호관련성을 갖고 구성되며, 신념체계에는 신념간의 관련성과 영향력에 따라 중심신념이 존재한다. 이에, 고등학생 526명의 수학적 신념 검사결과를 바탕으로, 수학적 신념의 요인간 상관분석과 중다회귀분석 결과를 이용하여, 중심신념요인으로 끈기, 도전성, 자신감, 감정을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 수학적 신념체계의 중심신념요인들은 학생들의 수학학습의 경험에 의해 발달되고 평가에 의해 견고해진 것으로 살펴볼 수 있었다.

학교수업에서 수학교사에 대한 인식의 잠재프로파일 분석 (A latent profile analysis of perceptions about Mathematics teachers in school lessons)

  • Based on Perceptions about Mathematics Teachers (PMT) perceived by high school students, measured by 2189 students from Seoul Educational Longitudinal Study 2014 (SELS 2014), latent profile analysis (LPA) identified five distinct types of student groups (positive, partial positive, middle, negative, extreme negative). These student of positive, middle, and negative groups are positive, moderate and negative perceptions about math teachers. Partial positive group generally had a positive perception about mathematics teachers, extremely negative group was very negative about mathematics teachers. Both of these groups had peculiarly inconsistent trends and several anomalies. The Multinomial logistic regression analyses also indicated that individual factors (gender, major, self-concept, resilience, self-assessment, career maturity), school factors (friendship, relationship with school teachers) and parental factors (academic-relationship, emotional-relationship) were significant predictors of PMT profile groups. The Analysis of variance also indicated that mathematics class (attitude, satisfaction and atmosphere), Mathematics achievement were significant predictors of PMT profile groups. The profiling of perceptions about mathematics teachers resulted in enhanced understanding of the complex range of processes students employed. During mathematics class, implementation of smooth interactions and communications between students and teachers added in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

NCW 효과측정에 관한 문헌조사 연구 (A Literature Review of the Effectiveness Measurement for NCW)

  • NCW(Network Centric Warfare) offers BSEs(Battelspace-Entities) the capabilities of sharing information through C4ISRCommand, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) network and it also improves their combat powers based on information superiority with awareness of common situation in battlefield and self-synchronization. Although the concept of NCW was developed at the end of 1990 and there have been various studies for NCW from the development of its concept, the effort for measuring the synergistic effect of NCW is insufficient at the present time. Therefore, in this paper we reviewed literatures concerning the effectiveness measurement of NCW. The category of our survey is network effect, metrics, simulation, battlefield information, social network analysis and mathematical model. The main purpose of this study is to suggest future researchers a research direction by analyzing the aspects and limitations of existing studies about the quantitative measurement of NCW.

잠재집단회귀모델(LCRM)을 통한 학생의 수학적 신념에 대한 교사의 수학적 신념 영향분석 (Analysis of the Effect in Mathematics Teachers Beliefs on their Students Beliefs by Latent Class Regression Model)

  • 본 연구는 교사의 수학적 신념이 학생의 수학적 신념에 주는 영향을 잠재집단회귀모델(Latent Class Regression Model; LCRM)을 통해 분석하였다. 분석을 위해 본 연구는 잠재집단분석(Latent Class Analysis; LCA)을 통해 교사 60명과 그 교사에게 배우는 학생 1850명의 수학적 신념을 각각 분류한 강성권, 홍진곤(2020)의 연구결과를 활용하였다. 분석결과, '수학의 본질'에 대한 교사의 신념은 학생의 '수학교과', '수학문제해결', '수학학습' 신념에 영향을 주었다. 또한, '수학의 교수'와 '수학적 능력'에 관한 교사의 신념은 학생의 '수학교과', '수학문제해결', '자아개념' 신념에 영향을 주었다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 교사의 수학적 신념이 학생의 수학적 신념에 실질적인 영향을 끼친다는 것을 통계적으로 실증하였다. 이러한 연구결과는 교사들의 연수와 관련한 목표와 내용의 설정에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.

  • 영재들의 학습 효과를 위해서는 학생들이 지적으로 준비가 갖추어졌다할지라도, 학생들의 지적 능력을 활성화하고 적극적인 학습 행동으로 동력화해야 한다. 이를 위해서는 수학교과에 대한 정의적 특성을 강조하지 않을 수 없다. 본 연구에서는 수학영재학생들의 수학교과에 대한 자아개념, 태도, 흥미, 수학불안, 학습습관과 같은 수학교과에 대한 정의적 특성들을 분석하였다.

고등학교 남녀 학생의 수학 능력에 대한 담론 연구 (A Study on the Discourses Related to Mathematical Aptitude in High School Students)

  • This study aims to study the discourses influencing high school students' concept and attitude toward mathematics, and to examine how gender differences concerning mathematical aptitude are created. This study is based on the results of previous two studies which suggested that mathematical competence differs not only according to gender, region and school year, but also even within the same gender. For this study, 12 students ranking in the top 10% at two co-ed high schools were interviewed to find out 1) what discourses are related to gender and mathematics, 2) in what way these discourses are formulated and gain currency, and 3) how they have affected students in general. Common notions concerning mathematics may be summed up as follows: 1) Most of the students believe that gender difference in mathematical aptitude results because biologically men tend to be strong in mathematics and analytical skills while women tend to have better linguistic ability. This concept can help male students' studying to have a greater learning toward mathematics. 2) A large number of the students believe that male students' studying method is based on comprehension whereas female students' method is based on retention, and hence the former group tends to be better at applying their learning than the latter group. This notion seres to encourage male students and discourage female students from tackling difficult mathematical problems. 3) Many students believe that, although female students may surpass their male counterparts in middle school or the first year of high school, they will eventually fall behind by the 3rd year. Despite research which shows that these common beliefs are not grounded in scientific proof, high-school girls, who may be strong in mathematics, lose self-confidence and feel a sense of crisis. The mechanisms which produce and reinforce such concepts as those mentioned above can be summarized as follows: 1) Regarding the choice of majors and future career paths, parents show different attitudes toward sons and daughters, and this tends to influence high-school girls and hinders them from entering mathematics-related fields. 2) Teachers with value systems based on stereo-typed gender roles affect students a great deal, and give different advice according to gender of their students, for selecting their major fields - for instance, whether to study the natural sciences as opposed to humanities. 3) This study indicates that peer-group behavior, of either support or exclusion, also reinforces the process of internalizing notions of gender difference related to mathematical aptitude. 4) The gender-based notion that men are naturally more inclined to have better mathematical ability has caused male students to choose the natural science subjects and female students to turn to the humanities. The discourses discussed above, propagated in schools and homes, and in the mass media, are continually reinforced along with general gender inequalities in the society at large.

TOKAMAK REACTOR SYSTEM ANALYSIS CODE FOR THE CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF DEMO REACTOR

  • Tokamak reactor system analysis code was developed at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) and is used here for the conceptual development of a DEMO reactor. In the system analysis code, prospects of the development of plasma physics and the relevant technology are included in a simple mathematical model, i.e., the overall plant power balance equation and the plasma power balance equation. This system analysis code provides satisfactory results for developing the concept of a DEMO reactor and for identifying the necessary R&D areas, both in the physics and technology areas for the realization of the concept. With this system analysis code, the performance of a DEMO reactor with a limited extension of the plasma physics and technology adopted in the ITER design. The main requirements for the DEMO reactor were selected as: 1) demonstrate tritium self-sufficiency, 2) generate net electricity, and 3) achieve a steady-state operation. It was shown that to access an operational region for higher performance, the main restrictions are presented by the divertor heat load and the steady-state operation requirements.

정규수업과 연계된 수학과의 웹 기반 가정학습에 대한 연구 (On a Web-Based Home Study in the Regular Lessons of Mathematics Education)

  • In a globalization and information society in the 21st century, the emphasis of education is on producing people who can create intellectual value. To meet the purpose in mathematics education, students should be taught to be able to understand basic logics and principles and exchange mathematical information each other. Also they had better be guided to study on their own at home in an effective way. In reality, however, most of the home study does not go beyond confirming the same homework. It is very difficult for students to plan systematic preparation and review of their lessons and study on their own. Moreover there seems to be no integration between the lessons students receive at school and in private classes. Therefore the need for more systematic home study in relation to school lessons is high to maximize the teaming effect. Studying through Web has little restriction in terms of time and space. Students can collect useful information inexpensively and share their learning assignment with each other. But mathematics education through Web has not yet been developed in such a way as to see a positive result from it. This research intends to develop a web site where students can study mathematics systematically in a self-guided way. The research methods applied included survey, student discussion and online home study. The questionnaires were designed to figure out students'and parents'changes in their concept of mathematics home study. The research also tried to look for ways to cut down the burden of expensive private lessons in mathematics. The student discussions were made up of problem-making and problem-solving. The discussion procedure was analysed so as to check if students used their creativity while they were working. As stated above, the research aims to develop a web site to support effective home study, enhance students' mathematical ability and reduce the burden of private lessons.
