  • In semi-enclosed shallow sea areas typified by the Yellow sea and the East China Sea, currents and sea surface variations are predominantly tidal. During the recent years two-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic model of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea has been developed, based on the vertically-integrated equations of motion and continuity, capable of reproducing amplitudes and phases of the principal components of tides to satisfiable accuracy. As a subsequent development a three-dimensional hydrodynamical nymerical model covering the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea has been formulated to investigate the vertical distribution of horizontal tidal current and the response of the continented to investigate the vertical distribution of horizontal tidal current and the response of the continental shelf sea to steady uniform wind stress field imposed over the surface. Features of the M2 tidal current and the wind-induced three-dimensional current structure determined from the computation have been examined and discussed.

  • The paper describes a new and rigorous mathematical model using counter-EMF for the rotor field oriented system with induction motor which uses the estimated speed and rotor flux based on a Model Reference Adaptive System as well as the real-time approach. The estimated speed and rotor flux is used for the speed and flux feedback control. The stability and the convergence of the estimator are improved on the basis of hyperstability theory for non-linear systems. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and also the sensorless control was tested on the propulsion system simulator used for the development of Korean High-Speed Railway Train(KHSRT).

  • Visibility of a space have been defined in several different ways: such as the axial line covering a convex space, a convex space defining the fattest shape in a space and an Isovist field formed by a field of vision at a given vantage point. Isovist fields are referred to as a descriptive medium to describe a movement by reviewing and analyzing geometric properties in them. Many descriptive methods for analysis of three-dimensional isovist are applied to analyzing the morphological properties in a 3D space more realistically. Although these models are regarded as a more advanced method for describing spatial properties, they have pros and cons such as complex mathematical calculations and somewhat arbitrary calibration in addition to huge consumption of memory space. These difficulties lead to the development of a three-dimensional visual accessibility model that explores the implication of building shape on the calculation of isovist fields drawn on a 2D plane. We propose a conceptual framework of how to measure the isovist field not as a 3D volume but as a combination of 2D plane on the ground with the 3D building shape of it's facade.

  • The use of ion beams in the micro/nano scale is greatly increased by technology development. Especially, focused ion beams (FIBs) have a great potential to fabricate the device in sub micro scale. Nevertheless, FIB has several limitations, surface swelling in low ion dose regime, precipitation of incident ions, and the redeposition effect due to the sputtered atoms. In this research, we demonstrate a way which can be used to fabricate mold structures on a silicon substrate using FIBs. For the purpose of the demonstration, two essential subjects are necessary. One is that focused ion beam diameter as well as shape has to be measured and verified. The other one is that the accurate rotational symmetric model of ion-solid interaction has to be mathematically developed. We apply those two, measured beam diameter and mathematical model, to fabricate optical lenses mold on silicon. The characteristics of silicon mold fabrication will be discussed as well as simulation results.

  • Background: Thanks to the development of the mathematical/statistical reverse engineering and the high-throughput measuring biotechnology, lots of biologically meaningful genegene interaction networks have been revealed. Steady-state analysis of these systems provides an important clue to understand and to predict the systematic behaviours of the biological system. However, modeling such a complex and large-scale system is one of the challenging difficulties in systems biology. Results: We introduce a new stochastic modeling approach that can describe gene regulatory mechanisms by dividing two (DNA and protein) layers. Simple queuing system is employed to explain the DNA layer and the protein layer is modeled using G-networks which enable us to account for the post-translational protein interactions. Our method is applied to a transcription repression system and an active protein degradation system. The steady-state results suggest that the active protein degradation system is more sensitive but the transcription repression system might be more reliable than the transcription repression system. Conclusions: Our two layer stochastic model successfully describes the long-run behaviour of gene regulatory networks which consist of various mRNA/protein processes. The analytic solution of the G-networks enables us to extend our model to a large-scale system. A more reliable modeling approach could be achieved by cooperating with a real experimental study in synthetic biology.

  • LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) panel cutting problem is a sort of two dimensional cutting stock problem. A cutting stock problem is problem that it minimizes the loss of the stock when a stock is cut into various parts. In the most research of the two dimensional cutting stock problem, it is supposed that the relative angle of a stock and parts is not important. Usually the angle is regarded as horizontal or perpendicular. In the manufacturing of polarizing film of LCD, the relative angle should be maintained at some specific angle because of the physical and/or chemical characteristics of raw material. We propose a mathematical model for solving this problem, a two-dimensional non-Guillotine cutting stock problem that is restricted by an arranged angle. Some example problems are solved by the C++ program using ILOG CPLEX classes. We could get the verification and validation of the suggested model based on the solutions.

  • This paper describes an Energy Efficient Timetabling Problem(EETP). In these days, the researches on development of an energy efficient railway systems are highlighted over the world. The departures occurred in an electrical power feeding circuit at the same time are necessary to be reduced as far as possible, to minimize the energy consumption. The paper addresses the operational requirements and facility restrictions to construct a mathematical model for EETP. In addition, it suggests several types of objectives for the model.

  • A fuel metering unit using PWM(Pulse Width Modulated) solenoid valve has some advantages such as low cost, small size and simple structure. The mathematical model and its experimental rig of the fuel metering unit using PWM solenoid valve and CPDV(Constant Pressure Drop Valve) for miniature turbo engines were constructed. As the results of simulation, some major parameters which have dominant effects on the performance were found. And the experimental results verified the validity of established model by showing the good agreement with the numerical simulation results. Hence, this system modeling could be used effectively in the actual development of a PWM fuel control system.

  • Recently, photovoltaic system has been studied widely as a renewable energy system, because it does not produce environmental pollution and it has infinity energy source from the sun. A study on photovoltaic system has a lot of problems like as reappearance and repetition of some situation in the laboratory experiment for development of MPPT algorithm and islanding detection algorithm. because output characteristics of solar cell are varied by irradiation and surface temperature of solar cell. Therefore, the assistant equipment which emulates the solar cell characteristics which can be controlled arbitrarily by researcher is require to the researchers for reliable experimental data. In this paper, the virtual implement of solar cell (VISC) system is proposed to solve these problems and to achieve reliable experimental result on photovoltaic system. VISC system emulates the solar cell output characteristics, and this system can substitute solar cell in laboratory experiment system. To realize the VISC, mathematical model of solar cell is studied for driving converter and the DC/DC converters are compared in viewpoint of tracking error using computer simulation. Output dynamic characteristic of PV array is varied by irradiation and PWM converter performance is studied using PSIM simulator.
