  • This study was conducted to present implications for mathematics education by identifying the structural relationship among personality, negative emotion, motivation, and career maturity that affects elementary school student's mathematical academic achievement. The participants conveniently sampled 179 students, from 4th to 6th graders enrolled in the same elementary school, and data on their psychological variables were collected in the form of secondary data. The hypothetical structural equation model established based on prior studies was verified with a two-stage approach based on the collected data. It was confirmed that construct validity and construct reliability were secured through assessing the measurement model. In addition, as a result of analyzing the path coefficient of the final structural equation model, five paths were found to be significant: 'personality→motivation', 'personality→career maturity', 'negative emotion→motivation', and 'negative motivation→mathematical academic achievement'. In particular, the path of 'negative emotion→negative motivation→mathematics academic achievement' that can be confirmed through the results needs to moderate negative emotions to improve mathematical academic achievement, and at this time, negative motivation should be considered together.

  • Currently, information society is rapidly changing and demands innovation and creativity in various fields. Therefore, the importance of mathematics, which can be the basis of creativity and logic, is emphasized. The purpose of this paper is to develop a math education application that can further expand the logical thinking of mathematics and allow voluntary learning to occur through the use of readily available teaching aid for children to form motivation and interest in learning. This paper provides math education applications using a smartphone and blocks for children. The main function of the application is to shoot with the camera and show the calculated values. When a child uses a block to make a formula and shoots a block using a camera, you can directly see the calculated value of your formula. The preprocessing process, text extraction, and character recognition of the photographed images have been implemented using OpenCV libraries and Tesseract-OCR libraries.

In order to find the components of the learning clinic program, we have classified self efficacy, learning motivation, anxiety, and academic stress as emotional factors and the results of Korean language, mathematics, sociology and science as academic achievement factors to examine the effects of the program. The results obtained in this study are followings. Firstly, there was significant difference in self efficacy and anxiety between boys and girls among emotional factors, and there was significant difference in math between boys and girls among academic achievement factors. Secondly, after applying the learning clinic program, significant difference is found in all factors such as self efficacy, learning motivation, anxiety and academic stress, and there was also a significant difference in Korean language, mathematics, sociology and science among academic achievement factors. In conclusion, the learning clinic program was helpful to maladjusted children by improving emotional stability and academic achievement.

  • This study aims to analyze how the history of mathematics is used in Chinese mathematics textbooks. As a framework for analysis, we categorized nine types of using the history of mathematics in textbooks. We analyzed 18 mathematics textbooks for Chinese elementary and middle schools. As a result, we found that various types of using the history of mathematics were adopted in Chinese textbooks except for explorations of mathematical errors in history. We also noticed three characteristics: preference to using for motivation and reading matters in elementary school levels, high frequencies of using problems from traditional mathematical books and origins of mathematical concepts or symbols, and emphasis on ethnic superiority through the Chinese traditional mathematics. Based on the results of analysis, we discussed and induced some implications for using the history in our mathematics textbooks.

  • The History of Mathematics (HOM) was integrated in teaching the Cartesian Coordinate Plane (CCP) to Grade Seven learners of Moonwalk National High School using Lesson Study. After the lesson was taught, there were three valuable issues emerged: (1) HOM is a Springboard and/or a Medium of Motivation in Teaching CCP; (2) The History of CCP Opened a Wider Perspective about Its Real-life Application in the Modern World (3) Integration of History Developed a Sense of Purpose and an Appreciation of Mathematics Among Learners. Feedbacks solicited from the learners showed that they have understanding of the importance of studying Mathematics after they learned the life and contributions of Rene Descartes to Mathematics. Hence, integration of history plays a vital role in developing positive attitudes among learners towards Math.

  • This study compares the relative effectiveness of private tutoring and self-directed learning on the formation of cognitive (academic achievement on Korean, math, and English) and noncognitive skills (friendship, self esteem, creative personality, and motivation) of primary and secondary school students in Seoul. The results show that private tutoring has positive but diminishing effects on cognitive skill formation with no effects on noncognitive skill formation, while self-directed learning has positive effects on both cognitive and noncognitive skill formation.

  • In this study, a men-tutoring model was applied to four second-year high school students in mathematics learning counseling that could cultivate cognitive and affective domains. By observing and analyzing the cases, we examined the effects of mathematics learning counseling on students' mathematical attitudes and self-regulated learning ability. The results of mentoring applied to mathematics learning counseling had a positive effect on reinforcing prerequisite learning, improving self-regulated learning ability, strengthening mathematical strategies, and inducing learning motivation and maintaining interest. We are looking forward to that men-tutoring can be used effectively for students who have difficulty learning mathematics.

  • Paper folding is a versatile tool that can be used not only as a mathematical model for analyzing the geometric properties of plane and spatial figures but also as a visual method for finding the real roots of polynomial equations. The historical evolution of origami's geometric and algebraic techniques has led to the discovery of definitions and properties that can enhance one's cognitive understanding of mathematical concepts and generate mathematical interest and motivation on an emotional level. This paper aims to examine the history of origami geometry, the utilization of origami for solving polynomial equations, and the process of determining the real roots of quadratic, cubic, and quartic equations through origami techniques.

  • Strengthening self-directed learning ability is established as one of the goals of gifted education in Korea. In addition, it should be noted that self-directed learning can be realized in variety of ways as favorable conditions and environments are fostered to provide gifted education utilizing program. in the recent days. But, gifted learning programs for programming are programmed for information gifted student. Therefore, we have analyzed in this study the effects of improvement on self-directed learning ability of mathematically gifted student through class utilizing app inventor program for self-directed learning ability. Built up from the 4th and 5th grade to elementary math one class for gifted children complete by making math quiz, we use the app inventor to activity. The result of experiment showed very significant difference in the post-survey to less than .002 in the pre-survey in terms of three domains, which are intrinsic motivation, the openness of learning opportunities and autonomy which corresponds to sub-elements of self-directed learning ability. We could verify from the result of the study that mathematically gifted student learning program utilizing app development activity have positive effects on self-directed learning ability of mathematically gifted students.

  • On the standards or elements of teaching evaluation, the Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation(KICE) has carried out several research as follows : 1) establishment of observation elements for selecting examples of good mathematics instruction between 2001 and 2002, 2) development of the standards on teaching evaluation between 2004 and 2006, and 3) investigation on the elements of Pedagogical Content Knowledge including understanding of learners between 2007 and 2008. The purposes of development of mathematics teaching evaluation standards through those studies were to improve not only mathematics teachers' professionalism but also their own teaching methods or strategies. In this study, the standards were revised and modified by analyzing the results of those three studies (namely, evaluation standards) focused on the teacher knowledge of learners' understanding. For this purpose, the meaning of learners' understanding was also investigated in-depth. Finally, the concrete elements on teaching evaluation focused on the teacher knowledge of learners' understanding in math class were new developed, based on the literature reviews on learners' understanding. Then, those evaluation elements were developed according to the five domains of learners' understanding such as evaluation domains such as students' intellectual and achievement level, students' misconception in math, students' motivation on learning, students' attitude on mathematics learning, and students' learning strategies.
