  • In this study, the research results up to now on original word form and its meaning of Korean number words hana, dul, ..., yeol are looked out from math-historically. In fact, finding out original word form and its meaning of hana, dul, and set(ses) may not be possible in the respect of history of mathematics. There might have been a gap between set(ses) and net(nes), and between net(nes) and daseot(daseos). Original word form and its meaning of hana, dul, set(ses), and net(nes) must be found out in different aspect from those of daseot(daseos), yeoseot(yeoseos), ..., yeol. There might have been a gap between yeoseot(yeoseos) and ilgop(ilgob). Coining number word mechanism for ilgop(ilgob), yeodeol,(yeodeolb) and ahop(ahob) might have been same each other. There might have been a gap between ahop(ahob) and yeol. The research results up to now have not paid attention to this gaps sufficiently. But according to history of mathematics, there must have existed several gaps.

  • The radical development of modern mathematics is due to the appearance of Collection Theory by George Cantor. The Set Theory is independent as an area and also closely interrelated with other areas. So its content becomes a common sense and a basic part across the whole area of modern mathematics. Accordingly, the basic element of modern mathematics is helping young children get familiar with set as early as possible. The thinking of set by which children can categorize, make partial sets and correspondences, understand the general characteristic, and conceptualize the discovered relationships is very important for young children. At this point where the Math education for young children is emphasized under the influence of the modernization movement of Math education, the systematic education for building up the set concept as the basic background of number concept during the early childhood is required. On current mathematics education for young children, graphs, the foundation of geometry, time, and patterns have been included in the traditional and practical content related to numbers. However, the education on collection which is the foundation of number concept is insufficient. A study shows that the level of young children's understanding on set is quite high, but the set concept isn't reflected in current Math curriculum for young children. And basic activities neccesary on building up the set concept, such as categorization, comparison, etc. are conducted in kindergardens but unsatisfactory because of those kindergarden teachers' premature understanding on the set concept. In conclusion, the curriculum for young children should be reorganized based on the set concept as the kernel concept. Also, the reappraisal of the training curriculum and the supplementary efucation for kindergarden teachers are urgent for raising the teaching ability of those kindergarden teachers.

  • In this paper, teaching contents in area between Korea and Japan's first grade math textbooks are compared. Based on the results of this comparison, implications for improving our grade 1 math textbooks are obtained as follows. Firstly, when describing the configuration of two-digit numbers, it needs to be considered that, after the mathematical description of a concrete material representing two-digit numbers, then it should be processed mathematically. Secondly, with respect to the composition and decomposition of numbers, use of the expression of 'some number and some number' needs to be considered. Thirdly, when reading addition expression and subtraction expression with an equal sign, the way of reading them with terms 'sum' and 'difference' respectively needs to be reconsidered. Fourthly, use of the distinct expression for the supplementing situation and the merging situation respectively and use of the distinct expression for the removing situation and the comparing situation respectively need to be considered. Fifthly, the jump in representing the expression of subtraction of two numbers as the expression of the subtraction or mixed operation of three numbers to explain (some number)-(some number) with borrowing need to be resolved.

  • In this paper, we proposed the integrated education program of informatics and math for solving problem using EPL. We applied a integrated math curriculum with EPL and analyzed mathematical thinking and attitude to the 3rd and 5th students. We used mathematical thinking test, mathematical attitude test and interview through student review. We also analyzed data of observers who are elementary school teachers. The results of test are as follows; First, we found effective points of meta-cognition and visualization of thought in solving the mathematical problem using Scratch. Second, mathematical thinking and attitude showed the result that 3rd grade students are more increased than 5th grade students in pre and post t-test of the mathematical. Consequently, we expect that the integrated education program of informatics and math using EPL can be applied to solve problem in math effectively.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the cases related to the lingual and non-lingual metaphors used in the math class at elementary school and consider the values of metaphors as a teaching method for the subject of mathematics. Throughout this study, teachers' gestures are analyzed as lingual and non-lingual metaphors shown between teachers and students in the class for the topic of the inverse proportion in quartic equations for direct and inverse proportions in Chapter 7 for the first semester of the 6th grade at elementary school in terms of the amended curriculum for the year of 2007. According to the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that there are mechanical and hypothetical movement metaphors in the mathematical metaphors observed in this study. Also, in terms of gestures, iconic, metaphoric and deixis gestures are found. Such metaphors seem to be evenly distributed throughout the math class and expressed in various forms. Based on the results of the analysis, the educational meaning given by the utilization of metaphors is considered for the math class.

  • This research analyzed the cases of math competencies-oriented assessment, integrating assessment and instruction, which had been conducted in an elementary school whose assessment system involves frequent tests from a formative perspective on assessment. The research outcome is as follows: First, the competencies-oriented assessment of integrating instruction made possible for curriculum restructuring and competencies-oriented teaching, whereas more emphasis needs to be focused on the assessment feedback. Second, assessment on math competencies involves multiple dimensions; therefore, it needs to be managed to prevent problems arising due to overlap between different competencies. Third, though it has been identified that with evaluation it is possible to recognize and gradually improve the areas short of competency, more practical studies need to be conducted in this regard. Fourth, even with the fact that various types of evaluation ensure its fairness, make an accurate interpretation of the evaluation result before arriving at a comprehensive assessment.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the proper identification method of the gifted students in math and science. The subjects were 6,237 students from 3rd to 7th graders. The subjects took nation-wide tests which were made for identifying the gifted students. The tests were composed of creativity, thinking skill, and academic achievement in math and science. The results of this study were as follows; First, creativity and thinking skill were positively correlated with the academic achievements. Specially, the academic achievement of science was positively correlated with the all of the sub-factors of creativity and thinking skill variables. Second, the influential power of each variable differed depending on the identification methods. Also, group 1, which was considered all variables such as, creativity, thinking skill, and academic achievement, was the most proper way to identifying the top 1% students from the subjects. These results implies the variables of creativity, thinking skill, and academic achievement have to consider identifying the gifted students in math and science.

  • It is the importance of Lifelong Education that is gradually more and more increased and publicly mentioned as the population of current society is aging even very rapidly. Especially the vivid activity of human being's brain is emphasized rather than before for the protection of senile dementia as people consider the sound life worth. This paper suggests mathematical education that is applicable and suitable for the emotional and cognitive level of the aged as the way of new method. I suggest the 'silver math' that may strengthen memory, thinking power and logical power of the aged, further cause the interest through games with mathematics, finally uplift the self-perception and pride. Thus, several basic elements are proposed here in this paper, that can be the foundation for the systematic and specific research of 'silver math'.
