Purpose: This study was to examine how an invasive procedures education program affected the anxiety and supportive behavior of mothers with hospitalized children, and to help provide an efficient to improve their maternal role performance by boosting their supportive behavior. Method: To evaluate their anxiety, Spilberger(1972)'s Anxiety Inventory that was translated by Kim Jeong-taek, et al.(1978) was employed, and Weon Dae-yeoung(1999)'s modified version of Melnyx(1994)'s Index of Parent Support During Instructive Procedure was utilized to assess their supportive behavior. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS program. Statistical data on real number and percentage were acquired, and $x^2$-test and t-test were conducted. Result: There was a more favorable change in the anxiety(trait anxiety and state anxiety) of the experimental group that participated in an invasive procedures education program(a mean of -0.14) than in that of the control group that didn't(a mean of 0.16). The experimental group(an average of 4..65) outstripped the control group(a mean of 3.42) in that regard. Conclusions: The invasive procedures education program that catered to the mothers with hospitalized children turned out to be effective in easing their anxiety and enhancing their supportive behavior.
The purpose of this study was to contribute to maternal nursing in the early postpartum stage and neonate nursing. Data were collected through self-report questionaires which were constructed to include perception of the newborn scale, parental role stress scale and anxiety scale. The subjects consisted of 81 mothers of preterm babies at seven hospitals in Seoul and Kyoungki-Do, from July 15 to September 30, 2000. Data were analysed by SPSS/PC using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA, t-test and Pearson correlation coefficient. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. The mean of perception of the newborn in the early postpartum stage was 1.35. The mean of parental role stress was 10.78. The mean of anxiety of mother was 39.74. 2. There were significant positive correlation between parental role stress and anxiety of mothers. 3. There were not significant influencing general characteristics to perception of the newborn and parental role stress. General characteristics related to the level of anxiety were economic status, expectation of pregnancy, birthing order, newborn weight. The above findings indicated that the level of parental role stress and anxiety of preterm birth mothers were correlated. Therefore nursing intervention for reducing parental role stress and anxiety should be provided for preterm birth mothers.
The purpose of this study is to analyse how the separation anxiety of mothers and children influences on the children's peer competence through mother's overprotection. The subjects of this study were 302 children and their mothers, three to five years old who attended at educare centers and kindergartens which were located in Cheongju city and Daejeon city. The results of this research were as follows: First, there were differences in the separation anxiety of mothers and children, maternal overprotective behavior, and children's peer competence according to the social demographic backgrounds. Second, the separation anxiety of mothers and children influenced on mother's sheltering behavior and babying behavior. Third, mothers' sheltering behavior mediated the relationship between mothers' and children's separation anxiety and children's prosocial behavior. It also appeared that mothers' babying behavior mediated the relationship between the separation anxiety of mothers and children and children's initiative.
This research delineated variables of maternal influences on children's social competence. The sample consisted of 287 pairs of 5th/6th grade students, their mothers, and 8 classroom teachers in Gwangju City. Analysis included factors of mother's adult attachment, marriage adjustment, affection in child-rearing, level of education and income. The result of multiple regression analysis indicated that affectionate child-rearing is the most significant factor contributing to child's social competence, followed by mother's education, close attachment, income, and anxiety attachment, in that order. These maternal variables accounted for 18% of the child's social competence.
Purpose: In the study effects of San-Yin-Jiao (SP6) acupressure on anxiety and pulse during labor, and on neonatal status were examined. Method: The design was a randomized controlled clinical trial with a double-blind method. Data were collected before (pre) and after (post) treatment using structured questionnaire, anxiety scale, pulse rate, umbilical vein pH and Apgar scores. The experimental group received SP6 acupressure for the duration of each uterine contraction over a period of 30 minutes, but the control group received SP6 touch. Results: The anxiety scores between the two groups increased, but the increase was less in the SP6 acupressure group and the difference was statistically significant (p=0.019). Maternal pulse rate was not significantly different immediately after treatment (p=0.711), at 30 and at 60 minutes (p=0.140 ; p=0.108), but while the SP6 acupressure group had a stable pulse, the SP6 touch group showed an increased rate. There was no significant difference between the two groups for umbilical vein pH (p=0.124), and neonatal Apgar score at one and five minutes (p=0.387 ; p=0.979). Conclusion: These findings strengthen the belief that SP-6 acupressure can be used to relieve anxiety during labor with no side effects to either mother or baby.
The process of having baby including pregnancy, labor and birth; is considered as crises of life cycle. It is noted that most pregnat women experience fear and anxiety through the gestational period and this may effect to the health of the baby and the mother. Therefore, we, nurses must focuse on this fear and anxiety of pregnant women and make an effort to relieve their emotional discomfort. This study was conducted to determine the pregnant women's intensity of fear and anxiety during pregnancy thus to provide some information for maternal care in terms of antenatal care. The specific objectives of this study are : 1. to determine what are the most frequently experienced fear and anxiety and how frequently the pregnant women perceive them as a fearful and anxious experience. 2. to find out the relations between the intensity of fear and anxiety of pregnancy and the demographic characteristics of the subjected women During the period May 15,1980 to June 4,1980,212 pregnant were asked to question are by trained student mures who visited to 4 obstetric clinic for antenatal care in C-city. The questionare were designed and and scheduled by author which covers 38 items about fears and anxiety during pregnancy and each item was answered by 5 seales according to it's intensity. The result analysed as percentile , mean and S.D. statistically and obtained as rollows 1) The mean age was 27,4 years, the proportion of women completed high school are 45.3%, and 51.4% has no religion 2)68.6% seplied“positive”response about fears and anxiety during pregnancy. 3) Fear relevant to pain, particularly during labor noted most frequent rate. 4) Social factors may relate to the intensity of the fears or anxiety further more socioeconomic problem take important role and affects to the expectant women, 5) Primigravida noted more fears and anxiety about pregnancy compared to multigravida and more in-tensity during aerly half gestational period than late. This study is about the working mother's parental attitude and the psychological well-being of children. This investigation also analyzed the differences in the psychological well-being of children according to socio-demographic variables and whether there was a percieved affective nurturing attitude and monitoring of the mother. To study such differences, 437 second and third grade children with both parents working were chosen as the subjects of this investigation. The data was analyzed according to frequency, percentage, averages, standard deviation, Cronbach's alpha, t-test, one way ANOVA, and Duncan's mutiple comparison. The major finding were as follows: First, the results of examining the differences of the psychological well-being of children according to socio-demographic variables showed significant differences in the area of anxiety with respect to children's genders, maternal educational levels and maternal occupations. In the area of loneliness, the differences came only from the differences in the grade levels. Second, there were significant differences between loneliness and self-perceived competence in the psychological well-being of children according to the subjects' perception of an affective nurturing attitude and monitoring of mothers. In other words, it revealed that the group of children that strongly perceived an affective nurturing attitude and monitoring by their parents showed a lower level of loneliness and a higher level of self-perceived competence.
Purpose: This study explored the prevalence of prenatal and postpartum depression in Korea and its influencing factors from 20 weeks of pregnancy to 12 weeks postpartum. Methods: Using a prospective cohort study design, data on women's depression and its influencing factors were collected at 20, 28, and 36 weeks of pregnancy and at 2, 6, and 12 weeks postpartum. The participants were 219 women and 181 spouses during pregnancy; and 183 mothers and 130 spouses after childbirth. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and influencing factors were measured by the Postpartum Depression Predictors Inventory-Revised, parity, and spousal depression. Results: The prevalence of maternal depression was 10.5% to 21.5% before birth, and it was 22.4% to 32.8% postpartum. The prevalence slightly decreased during the prenatal period but peaked at 2 weeks postpartum. Antenatal depression was influenced by low socioeconomic status, lower self-esteem, having experienced prenatal depression, having experienced prenatal anxiety, a previous history of depression, lower social support, lower marital satisfaction, and higher life stress. The factors influencing postpartum depression were lower self-esteem, having experienced prenatal depression, having experienced prenatal anxiety, lower social support, lower marital satisfaction, and higher life stress, as well as infant temperament and maternal blues. Parity and spousal depression had no impacts. Conclusion: The prevalence and influencing factors of maternal depression changed over time. Nurses need to screen women accordingly during the perinatal period and should provide education or counseling to prevent depression and promote adjustment to parenthood.

Background: The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of a spiritual care training package in maternal caregivers of children with cancer. Materials and Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study with pretest and posttest design consisting of a sample of 42 mothers of children diagnosed as having cancer. Participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. The training package consisted of seven group training sessions offered in a children's hospital in Tehran. All mothers completed the Spirituality & Spiritual Care Rating Scale (SSCRS) and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) at pre and post test and after a three month follow up. Results: There was significant difference between anxiety and spiritual, religious, Personalized care and total scores spiritual care between the intervention and control groups at follow-up (P<0.001).There was no statistically significant difference in stress and depression scores between the intervention and the control groups at follow-up. Conclusions: Findings show that spiritual care training program promotes spirituality, personalized care, religiosity and spiritual care as well as decreasing anxiety in mothers of children with cancer and decreases anxiety. It may be concluded that spiritual care training could be used effectively in reducing distressful spiritual challenges in mothers of children with cancer.
This study was designed to verify the effect of Doula-type-delivery nursing care on plasma $\beta$-endorphin, serum cortisol, related to delivery stress during labor, and postpartum anxiety of primipara by a quasi experiment(nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design), from December, 1999 to August, 2000. The subjects of this experiment consisted of sixty eight primipara, with single gestation, full term, uncomplicated pregnancies, thirty three for the experimental group and thirty five for the control group. Their mean age was 26.1 years for the experimental group and 25.5 years for the control group. Their mean gestation period was 39.7 weeks for the experimental group and 40.1 weeks for the control group. As treatment, Doula-type-delivery nursing care was given for the experimental group. Data assessed plasma $\beta$-endorphin, serum cortisol during labor, and anxiety during postpartum. Plasma $\beta$-endorphin, serum cortisol were measured in the latent phase before treatment(pre-test) and the transition phase after treatment(posttest). Also, anxiety was measured in the latent phase before treatment(pre-test) and 24 hours postpartum after treatment(posttest). Data was analyzed by t-test, $x^2$-test, Repeated measures ANOVA with SAS Program. The results of this study were as follows; 1. Plasma $\beta$-endorphin was significantly elevated in the experimental group who were cared for with Doula-type-delivery nursing care during labor(P=.0463). 2. No significant group effects were found, but significant time effects were found for serum cortisol. 3. The postpartum anxiety of the experimental group was significantly lower than the control group(P=.0110). In conclusion, these findings indicate that Doula-type-delivery nursing care during labor could be effective in increasing maternal plasma $\beta$-endorphin and decreasing postpartum anxiety. Doula-type-delivery nursing care during labor could be applied as an effective nursing treatment for primipara.
