  • In this work, effects of hyper-elastic rubber material properties on the indentation load-deflection curve and subindenter deformation are first examined via [mite element (FE) analyses. An optimal data acquisition spot is selected, which features maximum strain energy density and negligible frictional effect. We then contrive two normalized functions. which map an indentation load vs. deflection curve into a strain energy density vs. first invariant curve. From the strain energy density vs. first invariant curve, we can extract the rubber material properties. This new spherical indentation approach produces the rubber material properties in a manner more effective than the common uniaxial tensile/compression tests. The indentation approach successfully measures the rubber material properties and the corresponding nominal stress.strain curve with an average error less than 3%.

  • High-rise and large size buildings require high strength concrete and steel structure as a necessity. However, high strength concrete and steel structure are strong material but have a weakness to high temperature. Therefore, fire protection is a matter that must be considered very importantly in design for structure of high strength concrete and steel. Fire proof board that is existing method for fire proof has relatively low performance in fire protection emphasizes the need of new fire protection material due to the using of in numerable inflammables like plastics. The objective of this study is to understand the fire-resisting performance of newly developed fire protection material for building. This paper describes the results of fire tests using ISO curve that is fire protection regulation for buildings of the newly developed cementitious fire protection coating material applied concrete tunnel lining specimens.

  • In downtown subway project most of excavated soil is discarded externally, whereas in road construction excavated soil is used as filling material and management of surplus soil becomes important factor for success of the project. Excavated materials from slurry shield TBM are discharged through discharge pipe to slurry treatment plant and excavated soil mixed with bentonite are separated in separation plant by grain size. Fine material has been discarded together in filter cake without recycling. Its volume can vary according to geologic condition but statistically fine material as filter cake is about 5%~30% out of overall excavated volume. However, filter cake is non-toxic and can be recycled when mixed in the appropriate proportions with coarse aggregate. Therefore, in this study, utilization of excavated soil from a slurry shield TBM were examined and lab tests were conducted to find the proper way for mixing filter cake and aggregate to be recycled as fill material for road construction.

  • In this study, we study the damage by burning characteristics of insulating material of RCD (Residual Current Device) used in Korea. The insulating materials of RCD manufactured by three manufacturers are used as the sample. We compare and analyze the thermal decomposition characteristics, combustion characteristics and tracking characteristics of samples. The TGA and Mass Loss Calorimeter meeting the requirements for the ISO5660 (Fire tests-Reaction to Fire, part 1) are used for analyzing the thermal decomposition characteristics and combustion characteristics respectively. In addition, the tracking characteristics are analyzed according to standard of KSC IEC 60112 known as the test used for measuring the resistance tracking and comparison tracking indexes. The study results show that the resistance tracking property of insulating material provided by A Company is highest. Also, the test results show that the resistance tracking property of insulating material provided by B Company is lowest. However, the thermal stability of insulating material provided by this company is excellent at high temperature of above $350^{\circ}C$. In addition, the test results show that the thermal stability of insulating material provided by C Company is highest at temperature of below $400^{\circ}C$.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the tack-coating material's properties using the bitumen bond strength(BBS) test and damping test as function of changed curing times. In this study, bonding strength tests were performed according to the curing time of tack coating materials. METHODS : In order to investigate bonding characteristic of tack coating materials, the Pneumatic Adhesion tensile Testing Instrument(PATTI) device is used to measure the bond strength between the tack coating materials and aggregate substrate based on the AASHTO TP-91. Also, damping test as in situ test was used to determine an appropriate traffic openting time for construction vehicle. Four different tack-coating materials were used in this study. The BBS tests were performed a one hour curing and testing temperatures of $5^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, and $25^{\circ}C$. Damping test was conducted at 30min, 60min, 90min, and 120 min of curing times with temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : The BBS test results show various bond strength as function of tack coat materials. At the same testing condition, A tack coat material shows almost two times higher than D tack coat materials although both materials are satisfied the criteria of material's physical properties. Also, Dampting test results shows similar trend with BBS test result. The damping test result was significantly changed as function of tack coat materials. Based on this study, the tack coating material's curing time is very important. Therefore, both curing time and the bond strength's characteristic has to be considered in standard specification.

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of the microstructures and nodule type on the fatigue characteristics of cast iron. Fatigue tests were carried out in tension-tension mode using a servo-hydraulic testing machine with load control mode operating at a frequency of 15 Hz. The tests were conducted at stress ratio R=Kmin/Kmax, of 0.1. Initial crack ${\Dalta}K$ values were highly performed with increase in tensile strength of DCI fatigue specimens. ${\Dalta}K_{th}$ region, fatigue crack propagation was primarily advanced through cell boundary and in periphery of near nodule. Fatigue crack propagation rate of D2 consisted with 2Phase(Ferrite+Pearlite) was slow due to crack closure enhanced by crack deflection and occurred crack branching. The generation of crack branch was occurred due to interaction of crack-nodule. At Threshold and Paris zone, the fractographs of the fatigue fracture surface for DCI show typical striations of a ductile fracture and isolated cleavage planes near graphite. The effect of microstructure on fatigue crack propagation of GC strongly depends on the type of flake. The generation of crack branch occurred due to interaction of crack-nodule. The fractographs of the fatigue fracture surface for GC show cleavage plane along the flake graphite.

  • This study presents the evaluation of the patching materials that are used to repair the distress of asphalt pavement. Four kinds of patching materials currently used in practice were tested in both laboratory and field. The laboratory tests included the dry and soaked Marshall stability test, indirect tensile test, wheel tracking test and adhesive strength between the asphalt pavement and the repairing material was tested as a performance test. The field study was conducted using the slab samples placed on the location of vehicle tire passing and the performance of the repairing materials were investigated as passing the traffic load. The result of the laboratory tests were satisfied with the current design criteria and material standard except for water-immersion stability. Type C patching material showed the highest adhesive shear strength among the patching materials tested. However, the mature distress, such as rutting and stripping were monitored after construction in 10 days. It was found that performance of patching material is lack of quality behavior when they were applied in the field and required to develop and applu to prevent the mature distress of the current patching materials.

  • This paper deals with the result of thermal resistance test with backfill materials as bottom ash by using backfill material. Bottom ash, one of coal ashes, can be reused to replace sand because of its similar engineering properties. But without considering the thermal property, the abuse of bottom ash resulted in damage for existing structures. To investigate the thermal conductivity of bottom ash, laboratory tests for thermal resistance of that were carried out in this study. Thermal properties of bottom ash was compared with those of in-situ soil, sand, backfill material which can be applied as filling material. The tests were classified by water contents defined as the major influence factor. The beneficial use method of bottom ash was suggested as backfilling material.

  • Several fatigue damages have recently been reported which cannot be resolved in the context of the existing fatigue design procedure, and they are suspected to be the cracks induced by the low cycle fatigue mechanism. To tackle the problem, a series of material tests together with fatigue tests have been carried out, and elasto-plastic notch strain analysis using nonlinear kinematic hardening model has been performed. The cyclic stress-strain curves are obtained and the nonlinear kinematic hardening model was calibrated based on the obtained material data. Also, the fatigue test with non-load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joint has been performed in low cycle fatigue regime. Then, the notch strain analyses have been carried out to find the precise elasto-plastic behavior of the material at the notch root of the cruciform joint. The variation of the material property from the base metal via HAZ up to the weld metal was taken into account using spatial variation of the material property. Then the detail elasto-plastic behavior of the welded joint subjected to the repeated cyclic loading has been investigated further through the comparison with the prediction with Neuber's rule. The calibration of the nonlinear kinematic hardening model and nonlinear notch strain analyses have been performed using the commercial FE program ABAQUS.
