  • This study performed a detecting research of promising R&D field utilizing intuitive methodology regarding OLED illumination industry. For this, 69 professionals of the illumination industry in Korea were composed as a panel to hold an in-depth interview and survey for 1 month. The study classified the OLED illumination industry as 4 fields of panel, material/component for panel, manufacturing equipment, and lighting system, and selected core technology for each field, and divided it into a total of 14 possible fields for R&D. As a result of evaluating the technological competitive power for each field, the field in Korea which received the highest technological competitive power was OLED panel, and contrarily, technological competitive power of material/component for OLED panel showed the lowest, which requires improvement Meanwhile, evaluating economical aspect, conformity to policy, and effectiveness of R&D in general, 7 promising R&D fields were selected. The 4 core technologies of OLED panel, which are, white, transparent, color change and flexible OLED manufacturing technology were evaluated as the most promising fields, and next, organic material for surface light source, material/component for substrate and equipment for forming large sized substrate were evaluated as promising fields.

  • Recently, the FPD industry has faced the limit in market growth due to lack of new growth engine as a replacement of television. With sluggish market demand deepened by global economic crisis and persistent concern over panel oversupply, growth of the panel market has sharply slowed down, and profitability has been eroded. This also has tremendous effect on related industries including component, material and machine industries, spreading a sense of crisis across the whole FPD industry. Under this circumstance, for the FPD industry to take off once again, all involved in the FPD industry must cooperate and come up with innovative ideas, and identify the driving force to realize turbo-charged growth.

  • In recent years, the metal industry has become increasingly aware of an unwanted component in metal scrap-radioactive material. Worldwide, there have 38 instances where radioactive sources were unintentionally smelted in the course of recycling metal scrap. In some cases contaminated metal consumer products were distributed internationally. U.S. mill that have smelted a radioactive source face costs resulting from decontamination, waste disposal, and lost profits that range from 7 to 23 million U.S. dollars for each case. Despite radiation monitoring system does not provide 100% protection, POSCO has developed the system for the first time in the steel industry of KOREA.

  • Detection of specific compounds influencing food flavor quality is not easy. Electronic nose, comprised of electronic chemical sensors with partial specificity and appropriate pattern recognition system, is capable of recognizing simple and complex volatiles. It provides fast analysis with simple and straightforward results and is best suited for quality control and process monitoring of flavor in food industry. This review examines application of electronic nose in food analysis with brief explanation of its principle. Characteristics of different sensors and sensor drift. and solutions to related problems are reviewed. Applications of electronic nose in food industry include monitoring of fermentation process and lipid oxidation, prediction of shelf life, identification of irradiated volatile compounds, discrimination of food material origin, and quality control of food and processing by principal component analysis and neural network analysis. Electronic nose could be useful for quality control in food industry when correlating analytical instrumental data with sensory evaluation results.

  • Currently the copyright law and the online digital contents industry development law aim to protect the producers of databases and digital contents. A report on databases in the United States describes that an additional protection of databases is needed as databases get more significant in terms of science and economy and become a key factor on Internet. At this moment, Korea does not recognize the importance of databases of science and technology when we look into any public or civil organizations. Accordingly this paper deals in depth with overall issues surrounding the regal protection of science and technology databases, key contents for science and technology databases protection by current laws, and additional protection problems. Considering that the industry of science and technology databases plays a pivotal role in the securement of national competitiveness, the preparation of legal measures to properly protect databases as one of the policies for the continuing development of databases should not be overlooked.

  • We analyze competitiveness of material and component industry(MCI) of Korea, China and Japan using trade data, OECD ITCS database with HS-code system. We use unit price indices, export unit price index, import unit price index, and TOT unit price index. These indices provide quality information from trade data of value and quantity. Our results show that there are quality gaps among three countries, and that China expand development potential, and the results vary as sectors. It implies that R&D investment to improve quality of MCI products is essential and that sector-specific policy is necessary.

  • As the European Community's Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment banning lead (Pb) in electronics products will take effect on July 1, 2006, most electronics manufacturers will be commencing with volume production of Pb-free components by the middle of 2004. Electrodeposited pure tin finishes on electronic components are a leading contender to replace the industry standard tin-lead. Commensurate with this shift will be a somewhat steep learning curve as manufacturers adapt a variety of equipment and processes to contend with the issues surrounding this critical, industry-wide material conversion. Since the electrodeposited finish directly influences the critical reliability characteristics of the component itself, the nature of the Pb-free component finish must be well characterized and understood. Only through a thorough examination of the attributes of the electroplated tin deposit can critical decisions be made regarding component finish reliability. This paper investigates the properties of electrodeposited tin that may have an effect on component reliability, namely, grain structure (size and shape), oxide formation, tin whisker formation, and solderability. Data will be presented from laboratory and production settings, with the objective being to enable manufacturers to draw their own conclusions regarding previously established perceptions and misconceptions about electrodeposited tin properties.

  • For the effective utilization of tuna processing byproducts such as roes of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacores) as a food resource, the roes of skipjack and yellowfin tuna were examined on food component characteristics and also compared to those of Alaska pollack (Theragra chalcogramma). The concentrations of heavy metal in both roe of the skipjack and yellowfin tuna were below the reported safety limits, therefore, these roes appeared to be safe as a raw material for food resource. The contents of crude protein were 21.4% in the skipjack tuna roe and 21.5% in the yellow fin tuna roe, which showed to be the major component in tuna roes. The prominent amino acids of total amino acids were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, leucine and lysine, and these amino acids were comprise to be 38.4-41.2% of total amino acid in both tuna roes. The total lipid content were 2.1 % in the skipjack tuna roe and 2.0% in the yellofin tuna roe. The major component of total lipid was found to be triglyceride in both tuna roes (skipjack tuna roe, 93.3%; yellow fin tuna roe, 92.0%), which was high in the compositions of 16:0, l8:1n-9, and 22:6n-3. The content of DHA in total lipid of the tuna roes (skipjack tuna roe, 29.9%; yellowfin tuna roe, 36.3%) were higher than that of Alaska pollack roe (18.1%). Based on the results of the proximate composition, mineral, amino acid and lipid characteristic, roes of skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna showed potential as a raw material for food.
