  • In this work, 4-DOF ER haptic master is proposed and integrated with a slave robot for minimally invasive surgery(MIS). Using a controllable ER fluid, the haptic master can generate a repulsive force/torque with the 4-DOF motion. For realization of master-slave robot system, the motion command of the haptic master is realized by slave surgery robot. In order to follow the 4-DOF motion of the haptic master, novel mechanism of slave surgery robot with gimbal joint is devised. Accordingly, the haptic master-slave robot system is established by incorporating the slave robot with the haptic master device in which the desired repulsive force/torque and position are transferred to each other via wireless communications. In order to obtain the desired force/torque and position trajectories, tracking controllers for haptic master and slave robot are designed and implemented, respectively. It has been demonstrated that the desired effective torque tracking control performance is well achieved using the proposed haptic master-slave robot system.

  • In this paper, we introduce the improved control method are communicated between a master and a slave robot in the teleoperation systems. When the master and slave robots are located in different places, time delay is unavoidable under the network environment and it is well known that the system can become unstable when even a small time delay exists in the communication channel. The time delay may cause instability in teleoperation systems especially if those systems include haptic feedback. This paper presents a control scheme based on the estimator with virtual master model in teleoperation systems over the network. As the behavior of virtual model is tracking the one of master model, the operator can control real master robot by manipulating the virtual robot. And LQG/LTR scheme was adopted for the compensation of un-modeled dynamics. The approach is based on virtual master model, which has been implemented on a robot over the network. Its performance is verified by the computer simulation and the experiment.

  • We developed a wireless communication system for multiple instrumentation system. The developed system has a function of remote instrumentation and PLC(Programmable Logic Controller) control. The system consists of CC(Control and Communication) protocol, wireless media access and physical media system. For multiple wireless communication, we propose a hub polling protocol based on master-slave control concept. To show the validity of the developed system, several experiments are illustrated.

  • EtherCAT is an Ethernet-based fieldbus system standardized in IEC 61158 and SEMI, and widely used in the fields of factory automation, semiconductor equipment and robotics. In this paper, a real-time EtherCAT master is implemented on Linux operating systems and its performances are evaluated. To enhance the real-time capability of mainline Linux kernel, Xenomai is applied as a real-time framework and an open source EtherCAT master stack, Simple Open EtherCAT Master (SOEM), is installed on it. Unlike other studies, the real-time performance of the EtherCAT master is evaluated at the output of the network interface card, so that the evaluation results include all possible effects from the EtherCAT master system. The implemented EtherCAT master can send and receive packets up to 20KHz control frequency with low jitter, even in stressed condition.

  • This paper presents the implementation for the master changing algorithm between nodes in a general electric vehicle. The packet processing method based on the unique network method of an electric vehicle is that the method of processing a communication packet has the priority from the node of a vehicle installed at both ends. An important factor in deciding master or slave in a train is that the request data, the status data, and transmits or control codes of sub-devices are controlled from the node which master becomes. If the request data or the status data is transmitted from the non- master side, it is very important that only one of the devices of both stages be master since the data of the request data may collide with each other. This paper proposes an algorithm to select master or slave depending on which vehicle is started first, which node is master or slave, and whether the vehicle key is operation. Finally experimental results show the stable performance and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Teleoperation enables an operator to manipulate remote objects. One of the main goals in teleoperation researches is to provide the operator with the fueling of the telepresence, being present at the remote site. For these purposes, a master robot must be designed as a bilateral control system that can transmit position/force information to a slave robot and feedback the interaction force. A newly proposed impedance algorithm is applied for the control of a haptic interface that was developed as a master robot. With the movements of the haptic interface for position/force commands, impedance parameters are always varying. When the impedance parameters between an operator and the haptic interface and the dynamic model are known precisely, many model based control theories and methods can be used to control the device accurately. However, due to the parameters'variations and the uncertainty of the dynamic model, it is difficult to control haptic interfaces precisely. This paper presents a robust adaptive impedance control algorithm for haptic interfaces.

  • Recently, robots have been used in surgical area. Robotic surgery in Minimally Invasive Surgery gives many advantages to surgeons and patients both. This study introduce a robotic assistant to improve the safety of telerobotic Minimally Invasive Surgical procedures. The master-slave system is applied to the telerobotic surgical system with the master arm, which control the system, and slave robot which operates the surgery on the patient body. By using a 3-DOF master arm, the surgeon can control the 6-DOF surgical robot under the constraint of fulcrum point. This paper explains the telerobotic surgical system and confirms the system with the precision of the robot control related to the fulcrum point to enhance the safety.

  • This paper presents an optimally designed master device mechanism for teleoperated interventional robotic system. The interventional procedures using the teleoperated robotic system and the physicians' requirements are summarized. The master device should implement 5-DOF motion including 2-DOF translational motion for the entry position control, 2-DOF rotational motion for the orientation control, and 1- DOF translational motion for needle insertion. The handle assembly includes a 1-DOF translational mechanism for needle insertion and buttons for operation mode selection. The mechanisms for the 2-DOF translational motion and the 2-DOF rotational motion are designed using motors and brakes based on the various mechanisms to satisfy all the above requirements, respectively. Absolute position sensors are adopted to implement automatic initial positioning and orientation matching at the first step of needle insertion.
