  • The experimental apparatus has been set-up as a conventional vapor compression type heat pump system. The test section is a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger. A tube diameter of 12.70 mm, 9.52 mm, 6.35 mm with 1.78 mm,1.52 mm,1.4 mm wall thickness each is used for this investigation. The local evaporating heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were superior to that of R-22. and the maximum increasing rate of heat transfer coefficient was found in R-1270. The average evaporating heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass velocity and it showed the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22. The highest evaporating heat transfer coefficient of all refrigerants was shown in a tube diameter of 6.35 mm with same mass flux.

  • The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator(test section). The test section was made of a horizontal stainless steel tube with the inner diameter of 4.57 mm, and length of 4 m. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to 700 kg/m2s, saturation temperature of 0circC to 20circC, and heat flux of 10 to 30 kW/m2. The test results showed the evaporation heat transfer of CO2 has great effect on more nucleate boiling than convective boiling. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of CO2 are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of CO2, therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of CO2 in a horizontal tube.

  • Experimental investigation on two-phase flow boiling heat transfer of R-410A and R-134a in horizontal small tubes is reported. The pressure drop and local heat transfer coefficients were obtained over heat flux range of 5 to 40kW/m2, mass flux range of 70 to 600kg/m2s, saturation temperature range of 2 to 12C, and quality up to 1.0 in test section with inner tube diameters of 3.0 and 0.5 mm, and lengths of 2000 and 330 mm, respectively. The section was heated uniformly by applying a direct electric current to the tubes. The effects of mass flux, heat flux, and inner tube diameter, on pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient are presented. The experimental results are compared against several existing correlations. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model for refrigerants in small tubes is developed.

  • This paper reports an experimental study on flow boiling of pure refrigerants R l34a and R l23 and their mixtures in a uniformly heated horizontal tube. The flow pattern was observed through tubular sight glasses with an internal diameter of 10㎜ located at the inlet and outlet of the test section. Tests were run at a pressure of 0.6 MPa in the heat flux ranges of 5-50㎾/㎡, vapor quality 0-100 percent and mass velocity of 150-600㎏/㎡s. Both in the nucleate boiling-dominant region at low quality and in the two-phase convective evaporation region at higher quality where nucleation is supposed to be fully suppressed, the heat transfer coefficient for the mixture was lower than that for an equivalent pure component with the same physical properties as the mixture. The reduction of the heat transfer coefficient in mixture is explained by such mechanisms as mass transfer resistance and non-linear variation in physical properties etc. In this study, the contribution of convective evaporation, which is obtained for pure refrigerants under the suppression of nucleate boiling, is multiplied by the composition factor by Singal et al. (1984). On the basis of Chen's superposition model, a new correlation is presented for heat transfer coefficients of mixture.

  • The present paper dealt with flow heat transfer characteristics of R-410A vaporization in horizontal smooth microchannel. The test sections were made of stainless steel tube with inner diameters of 300 mm and length of 300 mm. The refrigerant was supplied with mass flux range of 260-600 kg/m2s and applied under operating heat flux range of 5-20 kW/m2 using a direct electric current heating method. The in let saturation temperature was set at 10C and vapor quality up to 1.0. The influences of mass flux, heat flux and inner tube diameter on local heat transfer coefficients were presented. Comparison with existing heat transfer coefficient correlations was performed. An improved heat transfer coefficient correlation for refrigerant vaporization in microchannel based on superposition model was developed with a mean deviation of 14.01%.

  • The leading edge of a turbine blade was simulated as a circular cylindrical surface. The effect of free-stream turbulence on the mass transfer upstream of the injectionhole has been investigated experimentally. The effects of injection location, blowing ratio on the Sherwood number distribution were examined as well. The mass transfer coefficients were measured by a naphthalene sublimation technique. The free-stream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is 53,000. Other conditions investigated are: free-stream turbulence intensities of 3.9% and 8.0%, injection locations of 40, 50, and 60 from the front stagnation point of the cylinder, and blowing ratios of 0.5 and 1.0. The role of the horseshoe vortex formed upstream edge of the injected jet is dicussed in detail. When the blowing ratio is unity, and the coolant jet is injected at 40, the mass transfer upstream of the jet is not affected by the coolant jet at all. On the other hand, when the injection hole is located beyond 50, the mass transfer upstream edge of the injection hole suddenly increases due to the formation of the horseshoe vortex, but it dereases as the free-stream turbulence intensity increases because the strength of the horseshoe vortex structure becomes weakened. The role of the horseshoe vortex is clearly evidenced by placing a rigid rod at the injection hole instead of issuing the jet. In the case of the rigid rod, the spanwise Sherwood number upstream of the injection hole is much larger due to the intense influence of the horseshoe vortex.

  • Tubular ultrafiltration membranes were used to investigated mass transfer characteristics of waste cheese whey. The effects of bulk concentration and flow velocity on permeat flux, mass transfer coefficient and apparent rejection coefficient were measured. Mass transfer coefficient was increased linearly with increasing flow velocity, and following relationship between mass transfer coefficient(k) and linear velocity(u) was obtained. k=0.87×105u11 It is interjecting to note that plots for all linear velocity tend to converge to the same point for zero permeating flux, and the maximum bulk concentration that can be achieved with cheese whey extracts was 38(w/v %). In general, membrane rejection coefficient increased with increasing flow velocity and the rejection coefficients of cheese whey solution and that of lactose in cheese whey solution were obtained 0.400.65, 0.150.30, respectively.

  • This paper presents an experimental study of heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of supercritical carbon dioxide with PAG inside a horizontal microfin tube. Heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop gradients were measured at 10 MPa in pressure and 520 kg/m2s in mass flux with variation of PAG mass concentration from 0.06% to 2.26%. The tendencies of both heat transfer and frictional pressure drop characteristics show the same as those of pure CO2 up to 0.3% in PAG mass concentration. In case of 2.26% in PAG mass concentration, measured heat transfer coefficients showed 50% lower than those of pure CO2 near the pseudocritical temperature and measured frictional pressure drop gradients show 1.6 times higher in comparison with those of pure CO2 at 60C in CO2 bulk temperature.

  • Numerical simulation and experiments were carried out on the absorption of carbon dioxide using PVDF hollow-fiber membrane contactor. Water or monoethanolamine (MEA) aqueous soluton was used as absorbents. Simulation results showed that the concentration profile of carbon dioxide was less affected by the flow rate of MEA than that of water absorbent. The absorption rate and mass transfer coefficient of carbon dioxide increased as the concentration of MEA increased. The mass transfer coefficients obtained by experiments coincided with those obtained by numerical simulation and theoretical results for CO2water system. However, for CO2MEA system, the mass transfer coefficients obtained by experiments were lower than those obtained by simulation, while the simulation results agreed well with theoretical results. The durability of plasma-treated hollow fiber membranes was better than that of no plasma-treated ones.
